Will drawing with music make me retain less
>>
>>7916238
probably, though hearing death metal ain't the best choice
>>
>>7916238
I actually think so. I noticed I listen to music so that I don't have to be alone with my thoughts, so its an escape. Drawing is an escape too, but if you want to learn then you need to be present in the moment.
>>

Retain? As in, youre trying to learn something? Yeah, no, dont listen to music, that will just occupy space in your brain and your retention will be worse because of it. Studying in silence is the best way to learn stuff, study and take notes PHYSICALLY, IN A NOTEBOOK, WRITE SHIT, THAT IS GOOD FOR YOUR MEMORY.

What about instrumentals/stuff not in my language?

different for everyone

You will still pay attention to it unconciously, studying with music is a meme, if you REALLY are THAT brainrotted, use white noise of some kind, I have used static before, its repetitive so your brain doesnt focus on it and its loud so your thoughts dont spiral, I no longer use it because its not a good thing, but its the lesser of evils.

[...] Huh? For what exactly? I didnt make a drawing suggestion that would warrant some form of "skill credentials" to prove the validity of it, made a behavioral and learning suggestion, something more abstract, because I intended on studying psychology at some point. I never even claimed to be good. What a weird thing to ask.
I dont even have any recent drawings at hand, I tend to delete everything I do after the fact, so have an old thing.

i love listening to music while drawing, sometimes i record dj mixes just to be listened to during art time

I constantly listen to loud music or movies while I draw and I'm better than you.
Not by much, but still. The argument is a meme

Whats the point of the dick measuring contest? Is every advice ever on this board going to be reduced to a "my dick is better than yours, youre wrong"? Highly complex music and patterns breaks the focus of most, many of the people I have talked to and interviewed have told me as such, and most tell me that it is indeed better to use highly repetitive stuff like nyan cat to drown their thoughts, so what gives, again, what is the necesity of the dick measuring, it benefits no one, it serves no purpose.
You didnt even post a damn image, you just said "Im better than you, suck it" with no proof at all.
This board I swear.

>You didnt even post a damn image
Ah, so you DO want a dick measuring contest!
I knew it.

Just had a great 2 hour draw sesh with some instrumental and EDM in the background. I guess for me it just werks
>>
>>7916238
Possibly? I recall seeing something somewhere somewhen that said kids listening to classical music did better in school or somesuch
Can't be bothered to look it up
The benefits might offset lower retention, since music can help you keep engaged and focused

I didn't know bean mouths existed in real life
>>
>>7916238
yes its scientifically proven too so dont listen at least try to
>>

There have been studies on this.
The gist is that instrumental music actually improves concentration as long as it is within certain bpm ranges.
However music with lyrics, or music that is fast, irregular or more complex, will generally be a debuff.

I often start drawing in a hurry without turning on music, and draw while a song is playing in my head. usually these are the sessions where I do the most gains. far into the process once I get tired I tab out and actually play something.
>>
>>7916238
I listen to music when I'm in the rendering phase
>>
>>7916238
Depends. If you always studied with music, then it's probably fine. If you are unable to study with music in other areas, that isn't changing with art either.

it doesn't matter if music makes you "retain less" if practicing without music is annoying
that's on top of practice not being the same as studying in the first place and you're not using the language center when you're drawing, so hearing lyrics is not a factor the way it is when you're reading and processing language
>>
You could try an experiment to see if listening to music has a negative effect on your work. Have a few drawing sessions where you listen to music and some where you don't, and compare the results. The important thing is to be honest and objective, if it appears that some habits contribute to lower quality in your work you have to face the facts and let go of them if you seriously want to improve. Some people say they live in a very noisy environment and music is the only way to get anything done, so in these cases I understand though I would still advice sticking to simple instrumental music, or like suggested in this thread white noise.
Yes you will most likely retain less information if you listen to music. Ask yourself, why do you need to listen to music while doing something that requires concentration? Does it actually help, or does it just make you feel like you've made progress?

I have always drawn with loud, upbeat rock music for mood. I've made some of my best work listening to noisy music, and years later I can remember what song I was listening to when going over my old drawings, which I wouldn't trade away lightly. So I'm not about to listen to any finger wagging on the matter.
That said, there are times when I do turn it off, and not all music is created equal, that much I will admit.
If the lyrics can be made out clearly or the song is particularly complex and interesting and I'm doing a task that engages the verbal parts of the brain more, this can be distracting. But there also comes a time when it's just work, just motion, and I think if you never get to this point, you might be leaning too much on your verbal or conscious reasoning, when drawing should be automated and "felt" at certain points.

Lately I'm reading more and I put on ambient music at a low volume, which I feel helps me stay focused. Again, context and content matter.
>>
>>7916241
why is that?
yeah
I like to listen to music when I draw always.

smart post

Fair and balanced. Like trying to sleep in absolute silence when you've had background noise your entire life

Clearly this is dependent on the person. I'm fortunate in that I can do stuff consistently, but the right collection of music will put me in the right mood to simply draw/paint better.
