didnt do art school, picked a normie major and got a normie job instead, saved and invested and now sitting on decent savings and living off the passive income until i find another job (not in a hurry). i just draw as a hobby and have a following and subscribers, not professional.

its like my friends either became globohomo artists begging for work, or just disappeared off the face of earth (probably in normie jobs or became NEETs)

it isnt really the needs of an industry to homogenize every aspect of it, its due to maximizing profit margins by cutting away costs and time. the industry suffers from low quality labour and products in the long run, despite short term profits. its not even good capitalism, its very narrow minded, as said, for short term, min-max bullshit. a good industry is sustainable and stable most of all. constant.

Well that's kind of besides the point. It's just silly to think that people should have some totally unique snowflake style when they look to work in the industry. Especially when you yourself understand that at the end of the day some people just want to have a job, like yourself. They just made it work with art as opposed to changing careers to something wholly unrelated.

that poster wasn't me and i only know vaguely about the industry as i considered doing art professionally before deciding it wasn't what i wanted and decided to do another major (because fuck rendering the 1938457th generic woodland elf for a videogame or drawing another androgynous blob for some 3D movie) but its pretty fucked that so many talented kids who were also pretty creative are being funneled into a flat note same-style, especially a style that seems like it's trying to be ugly and "unique" on purpose (while its not unique if everyone in the industry has the same fucking style now). Like I can't tell the difference between their current style and portfolio compared to another art school grad now.

I am glad I followed my instinct and switched majors and decided to just work on my art on my own, though at the same time I probably don't have the same training in composition and gesture drawing the same way the industry professionals do... but then even some of the ones who did go through art school still aren't that good compared to their old art. I would hate to have to work in the industry when it doesn't even pay that well either. Nobody told the art school kids what they were signing up for. If you just want be a visual art technician for a living, just a technician for someone else's style and vision, sure, nothing wrong with that. But telling kids they'll get to "do art" and "be creative" and then saddling them with debt to go draw for someone else in someone else's style and tastes? Bullshit!

Yeah art school in itself is bs, especially if you can't get to the good ones that would give some real value for the money. I don't really see style as an issue since as you probably know as well, the skills can be applied to any style. If their creative spark is totally gone that's a bit concerning but I wouldn't judge anyone based on their artstation since it's like a resume. In stuff like computer science people hardly ever work on anything related to their true interest so it's a similar story. Late 20s, early 30s is still pretty junior, they are accumulating skill with which they can eventually pivot any direction they want. Seasoned industry artists are freaking hardcore, it's hard to get to a similar level being a twitter artist, much less a hobbyist.
