So in short, I really enjoy my current method of storytelling (Text narrative + illustrations) because the format is great for a solo creator who works full-time and enjoys creating complete tales. I also have a small audience, and I know a few people enjoy what I do.

However, one big reason I went the "light novel" route is because although the workload is tough and demanding for a solo person, its not a soul-crushing experience.

For comic artists/animators (or former ones), I was wondering if you could talk about your relationship with the workload. Did you love it? Hate it? Do you think you got enough external validation? Etc. Overall, I'm just looking for a reality check of sorts from the other side of the pond.

Yes and no, drawing crowds makes me hate my life.
The only way for me not to hate drawing is by mixing weed, caffeine, nicotine and highly stimulating music.

I really don't like drawing just like a screenwriter/director probably wouldn't get any dopamine just from holding a camera.

I'd rather flip burgers than draw figures doing a pose with minimalist or no background without any narrative context or porn, I don't understand how people can enjoy doing that

I like designing and storytelling and the only reason why I learnt to draw was because it's the most cost efficient way to tell a visual story.

I only draw comic pages, I never draw random illustrations for fun, I don't understand how people are able to get dopamine from that

I need socializing, whenever people ask me what I do and I show them my work I get the validation I need.

Maybe i'm just one person, but I love working. I wouldn't call it thrilling, but building on something more and more satisfies my need to draw as a compulsive habit, do the thing i've always wanted to do, and create something that will be around long after me. As far as validation goes I don't really get any satisfaction from the usual bout of "this is great" or "this sucks", so I don't put much stock in that. My idea of validation is anyone that will give me a discussion, this is when i'm the happiest!

Some people would consider this soul crushing. I don't think most people can handle the lack of reward whether material or some kind of social validation, or the shame of failing to meet a goal or getting any other thing you might want from it. For me these bad feelings come and go, but they're always around regardless of how much I bury it. The way things work these days seems more like a total gamble, so I would never pursue comics under the belief that it's the thing that gets you all the attention you want (that's just a general sentiment I think could be for anybody) it's asking to be let down.

Curious about what you mean by reality check, but I think that just about sums up what I think.

Don't ever do it for external validation because it will be a long time before you get any that doesn't make you question the sincerity of the person.
