Is there really no curing aphantasia? If Glen Keane couldn't outskill it what hope do we have
>I've been misguided because I continue to worship a 27 years old film from a guy whose hands last touched a project in 2001 rather than see what animators are doing in 2026.
>>7928731>aphantasiaYou got to watch more youtube shorts and read even less books, zoom zoom, that'll surely help.I can't fucking wait for the entire gen alpha to have aphantasia and aphasia due to consuming so much ai-slop.
You want intuitive in a skill that requires repetition to acquire
>>7928731>If Glen Keane couldn't outskill it what hope do we haveKeane literally did outskill it. One of the best to ever do it has aphantasia; there's your hope.>rather than see what animators are doing in 2026Maybe the stuff from 27 years ago is just better. Have you considered that?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H61AJ0KkkEcbobby chiu cured his aphantasia. aphantasia copers don't want a cure, they want their bad drawings excused.
>>7928731>He must have aphantasia, look at his messy drawings!Couldn't it be because he's an animator and that he has to draw quickly and make corrections as he goes? You should really compare an animator's single frame of an animated sequence drawing, to just a regular singular drawing, since the animator is spending all day drawing just that one character.I mean, they're called ROUGH pencils for a reason, yeah?
>>7928751this, they are such whiny babies>>7928759Glen Keane specifically has talked about having aphantasia before it was even commonly known as a concept
>>7928731>Is there really no curing aphantasia?Stop what you're doing RIGHT NOW and look up Image Streaming by the late great Win Wenger.
>>7928731I'm convinced aphantasia isnt real or isnt as common as people make it out to be. Also I'm convinced that most people who "have" it could train themselves to see images through meditation. I was able to improve my visualization by drawing significantly. those are searching lines for form and arent "messy," all of them are clear (on an individual level) and deliberate, that twitter user is a moron.https://archive.org/details/mi-research-files-hemi-sync/2012-05%20%28TMI%20Resources%29%20Hemi-Sync%C2%AE/page/n1/mode/2uptry this
>>7928731I don't have aphantasia and I still draw like that. In fact my mental imaging ability is closer to the "able to manipulate the apple in 3D" level than it is to aphantasia. Glen Keane might have aphantasia, who knows, but I'd argue that him being able to draw something like this without direct reference would be a clue that he doesn't have actual aphantasia.
>>7928731idk bwoI know the idea of the eye. I can't visualize an eye with all of its details, but I know they're there. And by knowing they're there, and having practiced drawing those details in the past, I can achieve the idea of my vaguely visualized eye. I'd imagine that's how most people draw.
>>7928761>Glen Keane specifically has talked about having aphantasia before it was even commonly known as a conceptOh, I'm not denying he has it, or whether or not it exists, etc. I'm just saying that his drawing is so rough, simply because it's a rough penciled frame for an animation - likely one out of hundreds for that particular scene.I've seen plenty of similar drawing from other animators, who likely don't have aphantasia. Besides, searching lines are a thing, so it's not a aphantasia exclusive work method, though it may help them.

>>7928731I don't have aphantasia, so maybe I don't understand. If it doesn't affect your ability to draw proportions consistently, how is it an issue? The only thing I can think of is you're missing out on the ability to imagine characters visually before you draw them.
>>7929950I mean that's not "only", it's fucking huge, like being able to touch type 150WPM on a keyboard vs hunting and peckingYou can just start putting down final lines as if you're looking at a reference instead of having to fiddle around on the canvas until you get something that looks passable
>>7929212It's not a clinical disability so much as it is an underdeveloped ability to visualize, something that they should have learned to do in their formative years but for whatever reason didn't adequately learn that skill. So their brains compensated in other ways, and now it's difficult for them to think outside of those compensation paradigms that they've been surviving off of for the majority of their lives.
aphantasia is not real
>>7929959>You can just start putting down final lines as if you're looking at a referenceEven with reference that's not how most people draw. I don't have aphantasia and I still don't draw that way. There's still a difference between visualizing something and something looking good and correct on the page. Visualization is an excellent start, but for most people, it's just a good start. Even Kim Jung Gi, who was presumably an excellent visualizer, didn't draw things perfectly, it's just that for his style of illustration and skill level, he didn't make corrections in his performance art.
>>7929950People with aphantasia claim they can't see the finished work in their mind before starting, and thus can't just trace over the mental image. If this were true, it would mean they have to build the image on the paper step by step rather than just drawing it normally.
>>7930127I mean you have pro artists with decades of experience who can just sit down and draw their characters in any pose from any angle with zero reference or underdrawing, it might not be 100% perfect but if you have aphantasia you're literally starting from amateur tier sketches every single time and building up from them no matter how much experience you have I think it's easiest to tell in drawing eyes, someone who has a mental image will just be able to place the pupils correctly on their first try, if you have aphantasia you will need to redraw them dozens of times to get them right
