Van Gogh said that portraiture brought out his inmost experience and that he was truly expressing his artistry when doing portraits. Are portraits the highest form of art?
it gets boring after a while. landscapes are much more fun and versatile, but they do take longer
I think they can be, so long as the artist is trying to capture more than just what the person looks like. The greatest portraits tend to have background elements, clothing pieces, small details that reveal a lot about the subject of the portrait, their expression, and even their posture can say a lot... often they'd forgo exact likeness to better capture the kind of person they are, a type of idealisation I suppose. If it's just an exact portrait, it's a good display of skill, sure, but pure skill in the craft doesn't make for the best work.
>>7929393I wouldn’t say the highest but they’re certainly the most personal
>>7929393more like van gogh back to your day job LMOA
>>7929393It depends on the style.Impressionist and modernist are the continutation of romanticism ideals so they value portraits a lot more. Whereas academic arts value the entire body rather than just one aspect of it.
>>7929393The abandonment of traditional portraiture represents the moral decay of humanity. Even Van Gogh appears like a subhuman. And Landscapes? Landscapes are just backgrounds. The highest form of art is storytelling that reflects truths and transcendental ideas. Therefore I would conclude Manga is the highest form of modern art.

>>7929630I know you’re mostly joking but in all seriousness I think portrait art is becoming a dying medium. Figure drawing has become immensely more popular especially since there are more people. I used to feel bad about my art because I drew portraits so much because my figure drawings were sort of weak at one point but in retrospect I’m glad I did because portraits represent the place where most humanity is found - the face. I think portraits need to become popular again.
