I really want to get mentorship but I am about as broke as one can be. That being said, tell me about any and all of your experiences with mentors. Did you manage to improve faster than you normally would have? How was it? How much did you have to pay? Was it online? Which artist/website was it? Tell me all about it.
I have a patreon and one of the tiers is I redline some drawings for youIt's really really not that hard to get people to look at your work and give you pointers for little money
>>7934753"mentors" don't really exist any more.
>>7935211Yeah I've been thinking about something like that as well. You wanna drop your patreon? I might consider subscribing.
Mentorship really isnt much of a thing anymore unless you can somehow afford to go to places like watts atelier maybe. I joined a "course"at the tail end of 2024. Quality of teaching depends on overall quality of the attendees of any given session, so can be hit or miss for me, but overall its helped me grow noticeably more than is to be expected from my mileage (maybe 400-500 hours a year? My home environment barely allows for focused self-study or just drawing what I want to, so most of my output happens during these "classes")That said, price beyond what it should be and topics can be too scattered and unfcused on specific areas of study. I think later this year I might try NMA for a bit and see if it's something for me. Maybe continue with both depending on how my time budget looks like thenoverall, it's a reccommended experience if you can somewhat sus out the groups that arent attended by children and unserious not-even-hobbyists
>>7935632not just for art, the internet kind of killed any sort of personal tertiary learning. half of the classes at my junior college are online only, where even the grading is handled by some faggy 3rd party institution that you pay $100 to rent a digital book from.i'd honestly love to go back to having some doctoral type come to my house and teach me 1-on-1, but that's always been in the realm of the ultra wealthy.
>>7934753True mentorship is free with someone taking you under their wing because they see potential in you. Paying for a mentorship is stupid, that's just marketing to justify charging more what is just personalized feedback.
>>7935632>overall, it's a reccommended experience if you can somewhat sus out the groups that arent attended by children and unserious not-even-hobbyistsif it's gonna be group sessions I agree, but I was lucky to find this artist that does mentoring by way of having everyone in a classroom, but teaching each person individually. 9/10 are kids who just wanna draw digital circus shit or fnaf characters, they are paying the same price but are mostly left to their own with watercolors, while the few who are there to actually learn get the 1 on 1 experience adapted to their level and goals. He basically scams a bunch of kids who get nothing out of it in order to fund actually teaching the few who want it.
>>7934753>Did you manage to improve faster than you normally would have?Grew more in the first month than I had on my own for 3 years.>How was it?Great, still going at it, having someone who can point your flaws and teach exactly what you need for your next step feels like cheating. I feel bad for anyone who falls for overpriced online courses that are just a bunch of videos. >How much did you have to pay?300€ a month.>Was it online? No, in person.>Which artist/website was it?Won't name them, it's a small local atelier that's been there for like 50 years, family business, current teachers are all still working professionally.
>>7935756Wow, that sounds nice. I rarely ever see people in my country with great artistic skills. Maybe I should just focus on finding a better job so I could pay a good artist online to teach me.
>>7935751>He basically scams a bunch of kids who get nothing out of it in order to fund actually teaching the few who want it.correction: he scams their parents. Also based. Im int the netherlands, so the places I can go to these days are very very limited, though my general area isnt as bad as elsewhere in the country. Historical reasons
