I'd like to get an opinion on this one, I like it personally but it's been met with very lukewarm reception, or at least not as good as I was hoping. What do you like/dislike about it?
>>
>>7957774
I like the colors but it looks unfinished. A face is a natural focal point so it needs more detail.
>>
>>7957780
Yeah, I had a feeling it was too simple. I've been exploring a more graphic design oriented path of digital art, but it's most likely too flat, with certain parts having very little depth, comparatively speaking.

I don’t think the anatomy is fucked, it’s the clothing that is, particularly over her right arm and the lower dress. But the drapery in general has very little rhyme or reason to it and the folds are confusing. The colors are also more than a bit garish but I respect the boldness. Maybe reel it in a bit?

This all being said, it’s a beautiful piece with a fantastic style, and I would absolutely hang it on my wall. I just realized she has a computer mouse, the juxtaposition of her antiquated clothing with that modern element is really fucking cool. I’d love to see more art in your style with that theme.

>HOW
I set a reference photo to the side of my makeshift easel
Freehanded in a messy way with my charcoal sticks
Moved charcoal around with fingers and most importantly a KNEADED ERASER
I then used charcoal pencils to mark dark detail around the eyes
Left it alone for a day and then came back to add pastels (I used a small amount of hairspray as fixative on the charcoal)

I learned that its OK to try and get the likeness but its better to just interpret to your liking, I also pretty much ignored the color of the photo and used whatever I felt like

I suggest you give it a go!

Furthrer info: I made the charcoal sticks in my backyard and the pastels are an affordable mexican brand, as for the paper I used generic sketching paper from the chinese store.

Who the fuck knows about colors?.”??.??
Does this bitch looks like a cartoon w all the purple? How m i supposed to incorporate 3 colors ormeven 2 yellow purple and blue for a cohesive color structure?
>>
>>7962428
Assign a value role for each of the colors. If you want the muted yellow canvas color to serve as the half tone, maybe you can use the dark purple as the transitional values into shadow. The yellow can be reserved for bright highlight and reflected light. The blue can serve as a stimulating clutch value in areas with strong terminator shadows.
>>
>>7962428
find an image that has the same feeling as what you want to make and go from there.

>value role
>stimulating clutch value
>strong terminator shadows

love your character and weapon designs, they really look like nothing else I've seen in market where everything ends up looking the same. this one lacks a bit of clarity in distinguishing the shoulder pads from the face/helmet and the little tinny arms from the biceps, maybe could be fixed through color?
>>7964868
definitely gonna try this
>>7959099
love this, looks like an old Japanese print
>>7957687
I think its beautiful, imo the colors on the shirt/face/hair match eachother but not the heavy saturation of the skirt/shawl thing, so her face gets a little lost in the compostion to me

used to draw all the time as a teenager but haven't really at all in the last 10/15 years, picked up a pen again about a month ago and this is the first one ive felt kinda good about, drawn from the first reference photo on one of those nudie girl reference sites. I wanted to try to replicate a screen tone effect with pencils but I don't think it's really shaded at all correctly, and I want to learn to get better at crosshatching but im kinda scared lol I have no idea how shading works

Thanks! I am very pleased with the overall look of these designs in general. I tried to enhance the distinction between the small arms and the bigger arms as well as the armor plating and the head a bit via shading and hue changes.

kindof failed this one, couldn’t be fked to finish after the face was fucked up, anyone got any feedback on it generally what you like/dont like?
>>
>>7966217
It really is quite solid outside of the face. Make sure she doesn’t have an uncanny valley horror face next time and you’re golden
>>
>>7966217
at the beginning i really liked the aspect ratio of her silhouette, as i looked at it more and thought of some things i ARRIVED AT the left arm, her left arm, its fucked up, the hand is fucked up, the forearm is too long, it destroys the vibe of relaxedness and curiosity that the vertical torso conveys

the pose has also got to be impossible in the first place, the hips should be rotated outward but she is also like pressing on a very sensitive part of the hip that protrudes, but honestly i am not a lovely flexible teenage girl so i cant say

its a very pretty image, i could technically walk away without voicing my critique but the other guy said its solid and its not
>>
>>7966236
ye the arm is also fucked, the hand is like hovering. ah well we move on. Thanks for the feedback guys
>>
>>7966217
>>7966217
Besides what others pointed out but I think you have her legs attached to her pelvis wrong.
Like the legs imply her pelvis is closer to the left in front of her arm but the go past the arm and her butt is making a form kinda far away so she really has a massive massive ass. Hard to tell what form you were making on her lower back shirt because she really has a long ass if you look at it I think. Did you have underlying structure under the clothing?
>>
>>7966236
Oh glad to know I wasn't the only one that spotted the weird pelvis. Didn't read that far on this post.

hello, i created a low stakes summer study group server that will dissolve around early august. its for people looking to improve and share resources, their studies, receive and give crits, etc. Really just a server for individuals all striving to improve. given the nature of servers like this, there will be a variance in skill level which doesn't matter as much as willingness to improve and study daily.
You can add my tag:

cestaudi

on discord and ill just do some light vetting to make sure you aren't gonna troll or anything and invite you. As of right now there's 5 of us, and I just wanted to share it here in case anybody was looking for a space like that. To reiterate, the server will dissolve at the end of the summer, and it's really just for people looking to grind a short term goal this summer with others.

You posted my painting of a bust as a gotcha but it’s genuinely inferior to the sketches I praised in so many ways, just because something is finished doesn’t mean it’s good, any rushed out sketch by Manet done on a napkin towards the end of his life bedridden by siphylis would still be superior to anything Bouguereau has ever done.

To me the light seems to come from above which means the inner part of the cutout cylinder would still be illuminated and there would be a much thinner shadow. I never really did a lot of these desu, I did study Robertson a lot but his method isn’t mathematically perfect it’s meant to get you to a point where it looks good enough and you’re almost there, just knock a dozen more pages of this and you’ll be Gucci.

Thank you for the kind words anon. You’d be surprised at how goddamn long it took to draw a sofa in my backyard

As for crit, the face is undoubtedly the strongest part of this drawing. Values are really good too, alongside a solid understanding of basic forms. Keep that up because it benefits you tremendously when you make more complex art. However, I think the hair is a bit stiff, the shoulder anatomy is a bit off (it’s not as complex as you think, it’s basically just the relationship between the head of the humerus, the clavicle, and the scapulae), and the breasts are too perky. The breasts mostly “fall” on the rib cage , they’re like water balloons on someone’s chest. I think you would benefit from some life studies. Like just going in the mirror and studying your own shoulders will make drawing shoulders from pictures light work. Keep it up.

Hey, I think these are great. At larger sizes, the hatching becomes more prominent and competes with some of the other lines, particularly the eyes in the first face. But if you intend these to be scaled to something not much larger than 3" on a side, I reckon they work well.

>>
>>7974947
You need more sharpness and detail, at least in the focus points.
Those eyes especially look dead because they're, frankly, unfinished.
A lot of the time "appeal" just means nicely rendered reflections on the eyes.
Since this is apparently digital you shouldn't be limited by your tools.
>>
>>7974947
unappealing/ugly facial features. that's a drawing problem.
rendering wise it's pretty muddy. skin looks dead, needs more redness, saturation and color variation to make it feel alive.
expression and pose is ambiguous. no idea what this is meant to convey.
>>
>>7974993
>>7974996
Thank you, anons! I will try to focus on those points better next time.

The only criticism I'm truthfully iffy on is the one about the eyes being lifeless. That was a deliberate choice on my part, as she's a vampire; though perhaps it wasn't the right call.
>>
>>7974934

>>
>>7975016
I agree that those criticisms were pretty useless. Obviously you can render it out more to finish. I like the colors. My advice is to correct the head proportions. Namely the cranium and the get a ref for the neck. I feel like hed isnt attched.

What is it for and where are you trying to use it? Beg/int/pro is useless dick waggling. What you need to know, is with that art, you can make illustrations for saucy ads/flyers/business cards, skate decks, graffiti art, use as an asset in multimedia or photo-edited digital art, you can adjust the lines bright or neon and superimpose the image over dark or night-sky backgrounds, you can do your own tantric art, romance book covers, or whatever else in that area. Sure there’s always something to improve but what are you doing, trying to impress us? Magicians do their tricks for the audience, what the other magicians say matters a lot less

That rendering is not very good.

I can tell you're probably using color dodge or something similar for the highlights, and even if you're not the pure white reflections make it look too bright and distracting, like they've got a headlight right in front of them or something.

Some of that subtle noodling on her hair looks kind of nice, it's a good idea to imply material with some a mix of strokes that have transitions of hard and soft edges, the hair looks interesting because of that. Also, in terms of lighting, this texturing bias works where you want others to see, generally light areas will get the most attention so naturally you use it to express you brushwork.
Getting that feel of "it looks like hair" or "fabric" or "glossy" can be achieved with a combination of studies and experimenting through different brushes and techniques, just as the linked videos say, something overly digital tends to look overly repetitive, you want to play within an area of light or shadow, give it a different treatment if necessary, though the approach can vary within values it also enters the realm of composition, it's very deliberate, so make sure it's a choice, and not an oversight, through learning you'll start to separate what you find interesting, and what doesn't work, that's how you develop an opinion and therefore a style of sorts. Happy accidents can happen too but I'm biased and prefer that those happen when I'm content with the choices I've made, if it gets in the way, may as well fix it to my liking.
Also, I feel like you can squeeze a 20% more of that piece, sometimes it comes from just sticking with another hour, or just make up your mind of what sort of style you're going for through simple exploration, even a study can feel "finished" when you make the most of your values/brushwork/colors. Getting rid of the sketch layer can help, or you can be a little bit bold and make the inital sketch play nicely with your painting giving it that extra "graphic" punch, it's similar to the idea of using a complementary color for your underpainting for added color vibration.

The people complaining about the anatomy might be wrong.
I haven't read One Piece in years, but I remember the women in particular (and the men) looking really long limbed and lanky.
So I think it works.
I also think its gross.
But its true to form iirc
>>

why no praise on this?

Its perfectly effective. What’s it for?

As an artist, you are a traveler in strange lands that only you can reveal to the poor bastards who aren't artistic at all. If you are empty, build a world and explore it.
>>
>>7979500
That person is me! One piece is a cartoon so cartoon logic and cartoon anatomy apply. However Once you start trying to take that design into 3d reality cartoon logic and cartoon appeal can break down. Take Bart Simpson's face and try rendering that out and see what you get, it's no longer appealing and quite gross in fact.

You have to be mindful of what you keep and what you change.

Hey anon, thanks for the write-up and sorry for the late response! I saved your feedback on my PC.

I've only been practicing deliberately (read: actually try to learn lofty concepts like value grouping and edge control) for about two weeks now lol. For years I had drawn pretty much irresponsibly, by eye so to speak. I welcome any kind of feedback at this point, especially yours. I like asking for it on 4chan because people are more candid.

Anyway, composition/color study. Once again trying to rein in the muddiness. Kind of disappointed in how the foreground guy's back turned out, though, it feels underdeveloped.

I'm a bit nervous to post, but how can I make this more visually interesting? pls be as harsh as needed.
>>
>>7979538
I'm probably biased because I only draw cartoons.
But I stick by what I said, I think it's gross, but I think its true to form, and it works. I don't think this contradicts itself

That's beautiful anon! Anybody can give you their subjective and personal take on taste, appeal and beauty, you deserve to have your own fun and your own journey into creating what you consider beautiful.
All that I can say is, keep drawing as much as you can, not getting caught in detail and rendering so you can save energy to draw more, shapes, designs and composition. The more tools your imagination have the more visual options and variety you can express.

anybody got a worthwhile tutorial on how to draw and paint complex cloth folds because i suck ass at it

i just can't see the folds as, well, three-dimensional folds instead of a collection of wrinkles/contours

Take everything i say with a grain of salt. I dont paint. At least not like that.

First things first. Flip the canvas a fiew timesand sleep it off. Flip it in the morning and continue.

Reminds me of the prince if persia 2 (warrior within) opening cinematic.
Oops have i just dated myself.:D. Unc status is very close.
They inhabit a 3d space alright
Nice sense of depth plenty of movement

The guy with the coat could use a lil bit extra pizzas to emphasize his motion. You coult tilt his sabre forward like him trying to meet the nosleves pirates sword.

Did you use a reference,
If yes, recheck the coatpirates right leg. Not exactly sure how it works

If you plan on polishing this. And I reccomend you do. It will take time so.get ready son

Very nicely done.
>My pic.
Was messing about
Got some more messing to do still.
