A common technique is to start by drawing a thumbnail sized image with black marker to get the overall shapes how you like them, then basing the final image on that composition if that makes sense.

I tried to do a figure from imagination for 30 mins and failed horribly. I thought I was ok at visualizing shapes in my head, but I guess I was always hallucinating a particular feeling?Anyways, does this look right?
