You may want to go into the settings and bind your eraser hotkey to Toggle Eraser Preset. By default, hitting your eraser hotkey will "invert" your current brush into being an eraser. By changing the hotkey, your eraser will become an actual eraser brush instead.

I'm finally finished! Spent many nights on this for the whole week. Last night I stayed up until 3 am coloring it, woke up at 6 and finished it in the 45 min before I had to run to work, so I couldn't check the photo and see that Sana's face was that faded.
I'd like to make art like this regularly eventually, but this one took so much out of me that I'm gonna be a bit simpler for my next few. At least try a more abstract background next time, though I've never done that sort of thing before

Some things i notice:
1. Your brush is too soft, try using a more defined brush and define bolder edges. Squint your eyes and merge some similar looking values to simplify it
2. Weird lightning, the dragon is weirdly well lit in a cave
3. Unbalanced focal point, because his left wing is very bright it kind of takes the attention of the whole piece

draw through your shapes niggas. It helps a lot for continuity. Calve doesn't look like it connects with the thigh at the knee.
>>
>>7973390
Yeah I'm not sure what I couldve done to catch that earlier as i actually put quite a bit of effort in trying to get the torso correct. Did a lot of construction and repetition until it looked correct, placed a horizon line (around the shoulder) to make sure i wasnt seeing stuff wrong. I think its just a matter of practice that, the compounding mistakes with it. Unless theres a way of measuring proportions different to what i do that gives better guarantees (i use plumb lines and follow angles between unrelated shapes). I don't think I'll redo the torso since It's not waay off and looks believable.

>>7973411
Oh, right, this was actually a side effect of my brush being a bit too thick and me wanting to get done, in that it felt too hard and unnecessary to draw it. Same with a few other places lacking that, I'll fix those next. Thanks :)

Testing out some charcoal/inkwash type of art since I got mentally burned on gaming for a bit, haven't done much of this type of work with gimp and going for more trad-art look (think diterlizzi/frazetta/brom), to think that GIMP could do this and I didn't find the answers in the toolsets before now is a fucking war atrocity level criminality of hiding in plain sight level of a troll. I only used a mouse and some editing/adjusting and layering effects with some brush modality and layer modality changes to achieve the results. Holy fuck its time intensive but it does work in a simple way. (Won't finish the piece I think its a decent study already on the construction of said image and I learned what I needed from it.) I mainly have done just pencil sketching prior and can say this is 100% out does everything I've done prior by a mile and man... I want to bash my head against the wall for not figuring it out sooner.
(it was a technique/tool study rather than proper anatomy study inb4 criticism on that front.)

I empathize because no matter what I do I end up massively deviating from construction lines. You can see on the right one how far I shifted the head up and to the left. I just have no idea how to use it rigorously. It feels so chaotic and inconsistent but I don't know how to fix.

The teaching sucks, not the teacher. Inconsistent references, very little material prepared, arbitrary lines/decisions all the time, fixes drawings without explaining why, etc. For a video course, he falls short in many things until the lesson I did. Very painful to follow him, and his course is a lot of "don't just watch, draw with me".

Nice drawings!

I think the more I do it with construction, the better and more confident I get in drawing with less or even without the construction. In general, I'm very methodical to properly learn things first, so the hide style of teaching is too chaotic for me.

Krenz, for contrast, has a high standard for accuracy and proportions and uses fundamental methods to project drawings into perspective.

contd.

I want to do a seperate "lineart" layer on top of this to fix the line weight issues as well as add a bit more 3 dimensionality to it, whichll get easier using thinner lines. Is this a good idea or should i instead try something like make a backup copy and manually thin lines with the eraser? After that id like to color it, but i have no experience coloring at all. Should i try shade first then colormap? or straight to coloring? and do i just pick colors and go or make a palette first?

I was having nice results with dem brushes like I made pic rel but with this one I was trying to use that weird soft brush thingy are those shit? like that one that's circular and becomes more transparent at the edges thingy very soft. i thought maybe people used it for realism. Ok, done. I think it's ok here so I'll do painting next. Can anyone suggest how? The 3 methods I know are:
1. Paint (choose every colour, no layers, no opacity)
2. Flats layer -> Shading layer -> Highlights layer
3. Shade -> Colorramp -> Highlights layer

Are there any other options? Which is best for a beginner? I've literally never done any of these.

Something about the values or the composition is making this picture not have a natural flow for the eye. Contrast is a good tool to help this. You are using lots of different colors but the value is reducing the contrast I think.

great, then you can use him as your guidepost to find what to focus on
based on what I found online from nino, you have two main areas to work on: composition and value
keep this quality metric by your side as you work on something original, check that you're meeting it as you work on every piece
>>
>>7974051
Neither of the pieces you have shown are bad. Your shading and highlighting is really nice. Do you have experience painting miniatures? This second picture has a similar problem of the figures in the foreground blending into the background because of contrast and the blurring effects I think. Honestly I wouldn’t call you /beg/ but everyone here gets called /beg/ until they are /adv/ anyways.

>>
>>7974038
What is this scene supposed to illustrate?
>>
>>7974051
This painting looks like it's from a different time, card art from an old TCG.

Constructive criticism:

Your edges and values are not well defined, nor are there any strong light sources, so it's hard to tell where one object starts and ends at a glance since everything is stacked on-top of each other.

I'd focus on studying composition, contrast and lighting mainly.

The anatomy on the humanoid figures is also weak/low effort which adds to the beginess of it. You have a lot more room for error with the non-humans so they look good by comparison, but jarring together, if that makes sense.

There are parts of the painting that in isolation are not bad, they've just been arranged and lighted poorly.
>>
>>7974055
Thanks man don’t worry. I take no offense being called beg or anything in between. I have studied art and turned every stone for a very long time so I have done lots of different things. Thanks for the good comments I really appreciate it. Yeah looking into it youre right. From what I have been hearing I need to focus more on values, composition and overall forms and shapes. I like these two pieces a lot but I appreciate brutal feedback and I’m trying to make as many complex pieces as I can.

here's something quick you can try, separate the different parts using contrast.
stuff will generally get lower contrast the further they are from the camera. it's not entirely realistic but you can observe it irl when looking at distant objects. basically darks will be higher value and strong light will be more mellow. on top of that you can make artistic decisions like having the monster in the foreground be in shadow to forcefully have less contrast than the middle ground to create a focal point there. basically you can push the whole peace into lower contrast by putting a tone curve or something on top and then carve out your focal points by masking them out. then you can endlessly repeat the process to create a visual hierarchy

Just a quick touch up. Study thumbnailing, composition and warm/cool colors. I'd recommend Marco Bucci for all 3 of these. Your lighting and colors tend to stay too neutral/cold and your focal point isn't define so your eye doesn't really know what to make of this. Your actual rendering is pretty solid. I'd say it's your strongest fundamental present here. Your perspective is also off, but I'd recommend the above 3 before perspective if you want the fastest results

holy shit I finally made a drawing after like 15 years of wanting but never trying, family made fun of me, was awful, etc.
it's just the first exercise in keys to drawing where you draw your feet, but it.. actually sort of resembles human contours and didn't come out like a chris-chan sketch. it's still legitimate pre-pre-beg garbage but damn it feels good. didn't know this could be that fun. i don't know why I was so worried all this time.

Hey guys, I'm looking for feedback. I put together this compilation of a few 'favorite' drawings I made so far this year. When I look at my own work, I often feel like its missing something. A special sauce of sorts. But I’ve never quite been able to figure out what it is.
I don’t want to sound like I’m saying “oh, I just need one thing and all my problems are solved.” No, that would be naive and probably even a little arrogant. But what I am saying, is that I feel like when I’m making a drawing, I have the ‘IDEA’ of what I’m looking for, I know the art styles and the visual tropes I’m seeking to emulate… but when it comes down to it, I just don’t ‘get it.’
It’s sorta like… if you compare a human to a chimp. Humans and chimps share about 98 to 99% of their DNA. As such, chimps are decently intelligent, have opposable thumbs, a facial plan that isn’t too dissimilar in placement to a humans, and they even build small societies and go to war with one another. But that remaining 1-2% makes a HUGE difference. There is a lot you’d need to change about the chimp at a fundamental level to get it to be a full fledged human being.
That’s how I feel about my art.
I know it’s got the DNA of artists I admire and study somewhere in there, but at the end of the day, they’re on the moon and I’m flinging shit and screaming for a banana. I don't feel close to them at all.
So what I’m getting at here is: what do YOU guys think are the main things wrong with my drawings. The main thing(s) that make me suck. I know it’s probably more complicated than a quick fix, but any feedback or guidance from someone more experienced to give me a little direction to get to that next step up the evolutionary ladder would be appreciated.
>>
>>7974092
Can't you see the mistakes/differences to your favorite artists, and if you can isn't it just a matter of picking some reference and iterating?

You're watching content that's usually auto-translated, so of course you're going to lose context. Secondly, most artists don't know how to teach. They can explain, or at least try to, their process, but it's hard to describe things you're doing automatically. This is even more true when it comes to aesthetics. My advice would be to use media that's either in a language you're proficient in or has an official translation.

First of all, you obviously have TALENT, no doubt about it. And you're too eager to burn though your natural development stages. Just have fun buddy, you need to walk the walk. Through repetition you will begin to "see" what you like of your own stuff, and what you will be discarding along the way. At first glance, what I see is a rendering obsession over other elements of the work. I bet you end up totally exhausted after finishing one of those. Over-rendering time deprives you from the energy you need to draw MORE. This girls are really nice, my favorite is the string bikini one. I mean, I would like to see a whole series of pics with her, but that means you have to become super fast to do that. I believe that trying to become faster and faster will dictate "how good" can you really be, and how your "real" style will look like. Draw more, try to become faster... I think I'll draw that bikini girl...

Wow, you nailed it 100%. I'll often work on one of these for several hours across several days, and by the time I finish one I often feel the need to take a day-off drawing where I do some light doodling at most.

Your art is gross and unappealing. The top left one is much better than the others, almost like it was drawn by somebody else. It looks like you're trying to emulate all of those retards that are obsessed with "thicc" women and inflated asses. You're drawing BIG TITS and BIG ASSES, and the only thing you care about is those two things. They're tasteless pinups that feel cheap and trashy. The girls aren't cute, their faces aren't endearing at all, there's no charm or personality. Top right is gross, the squinty eyes and tacked-on fat lips look like a gross caricature. Oversized bolt-on balloon tits, ridiculous blow-up abdominal muscles, it's disgusting.

Like what's the purpose of drawing something like this? Is the drawing meant to be appealing? Cool and sexy? Humorous? I look at it and feel sad because you're wasting your time and skills drawing shit. There's obviously some bias here because (((anime website))), but Japanese artists have concepts such as charm points and "cute girls with heart-melting details" loosely that cover rough concepts on how to draw appealing characters. Maybe you should look into those sorts of things.

Secondly, you're lacking in eroticism. First, look up John Singer-Sargent's "The Socialite" (I forget the exact name) and note how it captures a fleeting, intimate moment in time. A good pinup should tell a story or offer a glimpse into the personal. What is the person doing? Why are they posing like that? What are they doing? Why is she standng there with her sword, naked and looking angry? I like the "epicness" of it, like it could be a movie cover or smth, but that idea clashes with the gross hyper body.

There's too much sharp detail. It's hard for me to critique your work because I find it so unappealing that I'd suggest scrapping it all and drawing something else entirely, but try to make your girls look softer and more delicate. All of the big hard lines and shadows make them look like solid objects.

Talent is just the name for the fact that two people can put in the same amount of time and effort and one becomes a pro and the other stays permabeg the whole time.

The curve should eventually even out after a certain point. But artists are disgusting retarded niggers , which means that every single piece of art is beautiful despite being absolute fucking garbage which creates an endless circle of not improving.

Some don't even like the idea of drawing in 3D cause it requires some effort. Then you have autists who are faceblind so no matter how much they try they can't really see what's wrong with the way they draw.

Thanks, it felt good hearing constructive criticism. I've been taking bullet points of this and every reply I get in my notes.
>It looks like you're trying to emulate all of those retards that are obsessed with "thicc" women (...) Like what's the purpose of drawing something like this?
This is true, yeah. I'll admit I've always liked oversized BBW milf art with oversized asses and what not, so in that sense my tastes might be perma bricked. However, I can't discount what you're saying either, what you're saying makes a lot of sense.
What I'm getting out of this, at least in part, is I'm getting too lost in the "big boobs and ass" side of the erotic drawing, almost like a crutch. I'm ignoring other ways to make my art and characters appealing, resulting in work that feels empty.
Like I said, I'm taking notes of everything here, so I want to thank you (and everyone else who replied) for taking the time. I'll get to work now.

I was worried that I was being too harsh, still want to apologise for it. Good on you for taking it well though. I was brutally honest lol.

I actually ran out of space, forgot to say that I really like the top left one, the ring of fire looks awesome, the proportions are much better, and the roundedness of the hips is the best thing in the whole collage. Did you stray from your usual stuff when you made it?

>What I'm getting out of this, at least in part, is I'm getting too lost in the "big boobs and ass" side of the erotic drawing, almost like a crutch. I'm ignoring other ways to make my art and characters appealing, resulting in work that feels empty.
More or less. Maybe study some erotica pieces that you like, or make a thread here and ask people to post stuff that they find appealing and take notes. Could be a good topic.

Also (unrelated), how do I draw from imagination? I can't do it. I've seen permabegs with better sovl than anything I can come up with. One of the things that first drew me to art was "outsider art", and I want my stuff to have even a quarter of the schizo creativity that has.

How does the shading look? I’ve not touched the airbrush or blender this time around, I feel like my colours aren’t interesting enough but I’m not really knowledgeable enough about colour theory in this way.
>>
>>7975060
that looks pretty good to me, it just needs to be more finished like making the lines more defined like in the armpits, other than that it looks good.
>>
>>7975037

>>
>>7975060
looks good, but it will probably make a weird contrast with the face's proportions

>>
>>7975060
Better although I think some of the shadow shapes especially around the belly are poorly defined.
When you design the shadow shapes initially I would suggest starting with just 2 values, one for shadow and one for deep shadow. you can smoothen the transitions selectively later (in moderation) to convey more subtle turning of form.
You should be really thinking hard about the shadow shapes, what form am I trying to convey with this shadow?
>>
>>7975064
>Then how
Why did you start drawing in the first place? I'm sure it wasn't because you wanted to fill hundreds of pages with cylinders in boxes.
Do you want to draw realism? start studying portraits.
Do you want to draw stylized? Start copying from artists whose style you really like.
Yes you will suck at first but by copying/studying from life you have some objective correctness to compare against and correct.
Yes you need an understanding of form and perspective and light and shadow, but you can tackle those things when they become a problem.
The only thing drawing more cylinders in boxes will do is make you better at drawing cylinders in boxes.
Have some bravery and actually start studying the thing you want to draw instead of staying in you cylinder hugbox.
>>
>>7975064

This,
You dont need talent and besides talent is just learned skill at a young age. Talented people are just those who either grew up surrounded by art and the resources to learn or people who've spent a lot of time later in life, you only see the final result and not the progress. Just draw doesn't mean just practice it means just draw what you like, get back into scribbling and doodling, children are able to improve because theyre passionate.

I will be reviewing other angles as well, isolating the meaningful parts to understand their rotation in 3D space. You put in a really good effort. This isn't easy, and I like your drawing—it reads well. Just make sure to follow the rules of applied perspective.
https://www.animationmeat.com/pdf/misc/waltstanchfield/43ws_perspective_rules.pdf
draw iteratively, take notes, then apply them to a copy of your drawing. the faster you become comfortable with erasing and reworking parts of your sketch, the faster you'll gain control over your drawing.

use your phones camera and take photos at different zoom levels
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ChcbbMJaI

>how do I draw from imagination?
I think doodling helps me. It's like writing, it's easier to write about a single rock in my garden than the entire garden itself. The fewer things you have to worry about, the better.
It's the same with having something on the canvas. It's like seeing shapes in the clouds. I think I know what a tractor looks like in real life, but I don't know how to draw one. However, when I see something that vaguely looks like a tractor, I can start connecting the dots and slowly build it from there.

>>7975171
Cool work! To get more contrast while keeping everything looking harmonious, the easiest solution I can think of is setting your brush to Darken or Gamma Dark so overlapping strokes change the saturation and value more naturally.
The second option, a bit more cumbersome, is to shift the hue toward darker triadic colors moving reds toward purple or blues.
If you only use transparency with the normal blending mode, I think your colors will end up feeling a bit flat.

Go to a fucking museum. Take pictures of art that catches your eye. Trust your gut and keep an open mind. Later, review the pics and think about what you liked about the works

yeah most artists go through that phase when they are a kid so they are not as self-aware of how bad their drawings are. either push through it and grind out the fundies or learn to treat yourself more kindly so you can reach your goals without torturing yourself.
>>
>>7975953
The way I've gotten back into it is to make it a social thing from time to time, and separating critique from creation

At least once a week I draw on magma with my friend, when I'm doing that I don't force myself to take it too seriously & I feel a greater desire to experiment

As I'm drawing I'm not looking for flaws. I think of everything I want to draw, add onto it as I go, not really thinking about how it looks, then once I get a little doodle done, I take a step back to critique myself/ask for advice before continuing. In between each step of your process you can allow yourself to look for what you don't like but if you do it while you're drawing all you're doing is making it painful and boring for yourself making you less likely to draw as often

Wow, great job! I’d suggest keeping at it. The setting is nice, and the composition works well too. You could learn and improve a lot by taking this piece all the way to completion.

Put it aside for a while, then come back to it with fresh eyes. Make a plan for the areas you already know feel off, and start gathering references from multiple sources. If something feels too difficult, either ask for help or, even better, find a creative workaround.

Great work takes time, especially when you’re still learning. Keep going!

>>7976050
Yeah but it’s understandable that you’d want to meet the minimum skill bar of the community you’re trying to participate in. You don’t want to show your /beg/ doodles to a bunch of pros for example.
Fortunately the bar for participating in the /beg/ thread is underground so everyone can start posting their work here right away, you have no excuse.
>>
>>7976075
>you have no excuse
I can think of a dozen off the top of my head. Don't try me.
>>
>>7976044
Cheering you on, but how do you know what your art trajectory is?
>>
>>7976075
My thought is join communities for beginners because there are very neatly divided communities based on skill level if you look for them because every other beginner who wants art friends has the same concerns. I think people forget there are hundreds of other people who have the same skill level as them and want friends who also are their skill level and like to draw. I think the mindset you have to have for it is being free of judgement. When I was looking for friends to draw with, I had to accept I'd maybe only be able to draw with people who liked subject matter I personally didn't care for (I had a lot of brony & furry friends at the start)

insecurity will cause them to keep pushing the deadline of when they are allowed to socialize because it'll never be good enough. I still hate my art, but I knew I'd be happier if I at least put it out there and gave it a CHANCE. If I waited until I was happy with my art I never would've met other artists/fans of the same stuff as me

The best thing I can offer is the shrimp method that I posted in the last thread. While people think it's a le quirky tutorial, it shows how fast you can see your improvement. Learning to draw is just about acquiring information and training muscle memory. The hand-to-eye coordination allows you to also connect with whatever you want to draw from your mind as well.

It is *important* to make sure you're trying to acquire information while also keeping track of your progress. Just because you get frustrated, it doesn't mean that you're not improving. Think of your brain like a muscle; it will burn when you're working it but that's also a sign of you going in the right direction.

It isn't bad and some of the rendering of the latex especially around the feet is actually really good.
In my opinion this is an improvement on your previous stuff.
I do think that you have a stylistic problem in terms of having a heavily stylized face with a rendered body, to fix that you would probably need to either push the face further towards realism or push the body further towards Stylization.
You're improving, just keep going and keep analyzing.
Anatomy studies would help you with understanding the forms of the body a little better. I think some targeted anatomy studies especially of the arms and torso/abdomen would help if you can make time for some studies.
I think compositionally you could consider value structure more, maybe find some art from artists that you really like and study their compositions in terms of value structure.

>>
>>7976338
don't you think your next step would be figuring out how to focus?
the best thing i've heard is to turn off background noise and to split whatever you're doing into 30minute bricks
for 30 minutes, you only do that. Do the dishes, clean, or draw, just do anything. Keep doing that and it'll get easier with time.
Once you can sit down for 30 minutes without distractions you can start studying

>Maybe I am doomed to be a perma/beg/
No, but your composition and color are underdeveloped. The skin tone is quite ugly and lifeless. Simply darkening an area is a bad choice most of the time, but it's an easy fix, study color. As for the composition, it looks cramped. Either zoom out and let it breathe, or change the camera lens to something that adds more space, such as a 5-point perspective.

>>7976505
No, but try using references from real professional photographers from time to time. Those reference packs are usually pretty awful and have no real intent whatsoever. Pompeo Posar is a good place to start. After that, you can look into italian, spanish and japanese photographers as well.

Today's sketch. I've been working on face planes and likeness for almost 3 months now. I keep straightening the tilt. It doesn't even look like her.

I'm really frustrated with myself, feels like I can never capture likeness. Not going to give up but can someone share some advice on avoiding straightening tilts and capturing likeness? When I set out my block in I make sure to check the angles and everything seems correct but somewhere along the line I fuck it up.

Always do this. Never not put them on the same perspective. Cement it into your brain.
Also, if this is digital, don't plague our eyes with these gnarly perspective lines. Just draw your usual, make it clean, so we can admire your work properly. Also, have you checked out
>startwithabox on instagram
I think you can do this if you keep doing the perspective thing + your silly boxes and cylindars. From here you can actually draw literally anything.

Also try rotating the same box within the perspective. That'll probably throw you for a loop.
>>
>>7976993
That's the formerly ellipse and line schizo, I remember seeing them a couple years ago, recently they graduated to boxes and cylinders, and now seems they're applying them to perspective grids. I think your advice is well meaning but they just kinda do that. At this rate though they'll be constructing things out of boxes and cylinders soon
>>
>>7976985
right now most of them lie outside of any reasonable cone of vision

>>
>>7976996
>and now seems they're applying them to perspective grids.
Ya, I recommended they do that here >>7976947
I think I've spoken to them a few times. While not nearly as hopeless as hatkid anon, I think they're onto something with this weird strat. If drawing boxes is what he does when he feels he can't draw anime faces, then he can actually do very well doing this, since most of everyone else does the reverse; learning anime and stylized shit and then ahving to go back and relearn perspective and the like. I believe in him for some fucking reason.
>>
>>7976993
nta but how do I know if im doing this right without outside help?
>>
>>7977001
That's a good question. You could just use perspective lines honestly. There is an actual method to rotating boxes in perspective.

All of the above, yeah. Practice as well. Drawing on top of photos helps immensely.
