The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)

Ongoing Contest:
KODANSHA MANGA ACADEMY AWARD
manga-academy.kodansha.com/award/mangaka-discovery/
>Deadline is July 22
>You keep all rights to manga and only caveat is IF you get stuff like the Grand Prize you Kodansha has first on publishing deal(and they get final say on no if no deal ends up getting made) so not too much downsides

Also if you happen to be in LA for Anime Expo this year Kadokawa is doing portfolio/comic reviews:
kadokawaworldmanga.com/onsite/
Also they are doing online portfolio reviews
kadokawaworldmanga.com/online/
However Im less sure about that one cause theres no deadlines and it doesnt say shit about what they do with the content that you give them. Terms state that its just a chance for editors to look at people's work so its not like a contest where you may give up rights but it just seems weird what they may do(like especially if they just leave you silent) but I dont think they are shady enough to just fucking do blatant copyright theft so its probably worth checking out

>THEY'RE ALL BETTER WRITTEN THAN THE VAST MAJORITY OF BATTLE SHOUNEN

What happened? How did the mainstream american comics market manage to permanently destroy itself and never come back healthy despite being perfectly alive, successful and exciting back in the 80s?
>>
>>7975747
Comics collapsed around the 90s entirely because of greed
They stopped many new issues and started rereleasing limited editions and collectors editions to pinch more coins out of their loyal fanbase
Comics became a ponzi scheme

Actual talents left because they were neglected by the pen pushers
The fanbase had enough of being milked and stopped buying
The talents that were driven out of comics turned to cartoons and animation
The comic fans followed suit

It was not a coincidence that the comic book crash happened at the same time as the golden age of cartoons.
Same thing is happening again with Indie films

About to start working on Chapter 5 of my comic but would appreciate any feedback on what I have so far. I also have to say I respect a lot of the creators here since your processes seem so much more structured than mine. Hoping I pick something up along the way.
https://thefoolsjourney.thecomicseries.com/
>>
>>7976249
Also quick question for my creators:
How do you handle major plot deviations? The story I initially planned to go with for the chapter ended up changing (imo for the better) which in turn kinda detours everything I had set up. How do you go about integrating these detours into the plot you started with?
>>
>>7976262
You can pull off any plot twist imaginable so long as it makes sense.
A good way to do this is with foreshadowing, or just things that happen earlier in the story that explain, tease, justify, etc. what happens later.
You don't have to actually plan for these, though it's better if you do, you can often add meaning to otherwise insignificant moments later on.

Maybe you introduce a new character that's super important... but to make it so you didn't just invent them out of the blue, instead re-use an unimportant character who they met and had an unremarkable interaction with earlier on. Now it looks like you planned the whole thing from the start.

While it's amusing that you all think the character looks like a girl, it's not actually what I want.
I want him to be immediately obviously a boy. I don't want to upset anyone expecting a girl only to find a boy.

I'm definitely not giving myself an easy time by making them long haired and in a skirt, but I think it can be done.
This particular story doesn't feature much dialogue, I hope that in situations where the character is able to show their personality more, it becomes more clear that they are a boy, and that if I can convey that well in chapter 1 (soon™) it will never be a problem.

cute, even with the art style I don't feel too confused in most of the strips. The sense of humor is decent, being non sequiter and deadpan. The low art skills doesnt bother me or make it hard to understand your pacing and intent, and I see improvement since the start.

I think studying art on the side will help the comic since it seems to be about your view of the world and covers whatever topics you feel like. You copyied the face here for the last two panels but I think it makes it funnier and delivers the intent better, just dont make it a habit since I think your charm is critical for this comic. There will be a time where it seems like the comics getting worse when you get better anatomy and everyone starts being stiff, you'll have to push through that.

this was my favorite strip, and the faces in each panel feel charming. I can say redrawing this comic with godlike art wouldnt make it funnier. But I'm looking at it as an artist so my opinion probably doesn't matter.

I'd say he looks extremly androgynous, which naturally means he reads as feminine to most people. Femininity takes a lot more maintainence than masculinity - you can be masculine just by doing nothing and letting your body grow, while femininity needs you to regularly shave, foundation, and condition.

Your boy looks like a cherub.

thanks for the critique. I don't think I care too much about the art. If I would, the comics would definitely took too long to complete. I learn that I should focus on my comic going to deliver it's message than 'ohh nice art but terrible facial expression and body movement'.
>>
>>7977439
thats a good attitude to have, I only bring it up because plenty of people on /co/ worry too much about art skill and die in the uncanney valley. And by better art helping the comic, I meant it will be more expressive and evolve more and you'll enjoy reading back on it to see eras of your life when making it.

wrong Japan produces something if the editors like it and see your shit as unique enough to publish, then if you didn't make enough sales = you likely fucked up and won't get another shot at it, another is the competitive model of "weekly" and "monthly" releasing magazines where you first have to win some kind of entrance competition to get hired to the business, then after that you get to do your work and if you manage to survive the votes to not get axed you keep working as a published author, if not they might put you to assisting others instead if you still want to draw for a living. its a really effective way to basically cut losses early.

The sad truth is most artists have too big an ego and ambition to stoop to making the lowbrow shit that sells to the masses, to their own detriment, while anyone with so little self respect to actually do it has no skill to make it happen.

Came across this page online and I was really impressed by how the characters are drawn in the middle panel. How do you make action scenes look this fluid? Is this just gesture?
>>
>>7978852
Unless you mean how it reads like drawing your eye to whatever, they drew it like a candid photo so instead of glorifying and posing characters to act larger than life or whatever, it's drawn as a kind of realistic depiction of snapping a photo right in the middle of a firefight.

There's a lot more going than simply realistic movement. I tried drawing "realistic" poses in action scenes and mine looked like shit (see picrel). The movements on that page are more exaggerated than anything. But it works and it looks good. Fuck, I wanna learn how to do that.
>>
>>7978861
Your perspective is flat and the linework has no personality, like it was drawn with a mouse. Your framing is also poor, study the space to subject ratios in the panels >>7978852

You might want to pick up this book as well
>>
>>7978861
I don't know the technicals of art, so maybe it's not so much realism but warped realism. It could be that it's what someone with a warped mindset thinks of as realistic, like they are going for gritty and realistic but it's filtered through fantastical elements and deformed body types, and I don't mean any of these descriptors as insults. I don't think yours is bad, it's a little flat in comparison I guess because it actually is closer to realism. Somehow the other one conveys being able to feel what is happening despite the angle being sort of flat while yours seems more dynamic on the surface. There's nuances to it that I'm not able to articulate so I can only make midwit statements for now.
>>

A description of CSM sounds like a reductionist troll because it really is that vapid and pointless. Right up to and including the end.
>>
>>7978861
theres drawing correct anatomy, and then there's drawing moving bodies. After you sketch out the right anatomy, push it further by stretching or bending things based on where you want the body to move. The clothes can move a bit like this too, you dont ever want to draw someone in an action scene in a posture that they can hold for a camera. So that means you should draw people in the air or on one foot or partially walking down a step like in that page with the animal people. This is what I learned noticing the same things as you.
>>
Why is it that most of the times you get rather a good story or good art?
Im reading Sergio Toppi rn, nice art that looks very destinct, but its one of those style over substance works.
I think it not so much about good or bad art, simpe art can be good. More about creativity.
In a comic or manga its rather that art is creative and the story is very simple, or the other way around. Is it too much if you try to push both?

I think things that are working for the example and not yours are more compositional then action, your page is like 90% empty corridor the main character is mostly off the page, the action isn't compacted or focused. i also think the example is clever in using three figures, it almost reads like a sequence of movement, hence the fluidity.

Hi guys, looking for feedback on Chapter 6 of Detective Hefferchu. It's on webtoons, tapas, inkstra, and pixiv, links at https://efsius.net
I'll also be streaming throughout today drafting chapter 8.

If you've read through the chapter, what is your favorite and/or least enjoyable part?

>>
>>7979019
Hi Hefferchu anon, I went and read the entire chapter. It was decently paced with the flashbacks and the back and forth between the characters. Your comic has always been funny enough to me, so you got me exhaling air faster through my nose as usual, enjoyed both the regular jokes and the meta comic jokes. The only thing that immediately bothered me was the initial scene with the assistant boy's flashback scene with him being in the classroom. The shading/screentones there seemed really roughly done and there were some obvious rough edges around some of the other classmates. If this was actually intentional, then I'd say there needs to be a better way to do that effect. Otherwise again, I enjoyed it.

How much texts is too much texts?
If any newbie tried to make a manga like picrel, people would immediately drop their manga.
>>
>>7979044

Imo, the amount of text in a panel should correspond to the pacing of the drawing in the panel.
And the pacing of the drawing should be such that it seems to be pass more or less in the way it does in anime.
(That is to say, most of the time the passage of time is normal, but occasionally time is slowed down during moments of action or thinking, allowing for more talking than would be realistically possible)

Pic related is my goto example of too much text in a panel. There's not actually very much text in the page, but because of the drawing in it, it's too much.
How much time does it take to crash through a window? Even with some dramatic time dilation... it's not a very long time, and definitely not enough to deliver a whole paragaph of text.
The most I'd say you could reasonably get away with in this page is
>"Luck you call it??"
and not a word more

A good rule of thumb is that you should never include commas in your text. Of course there are exceptions but generally speaking, people don't speak in lectures, and if they do, it's very boring.
If a moment of speech needs to be broken up, use elipses instead '...', and furthermore break it up into multiple bubbles. This better communicates a pause in speech than a comma, and sounds more natural.

Even if someone is delivering a long speech, don't put the whole thing in one big speechbubble under one drawing, this is very boring. Break it up into multiple panels.
This Deathnote page features two characters not moving, and a whole bunch of text. It's a bit wordy but overall it's perfectly readable. It would be unreadably boring if it were instead a single drawing of the characters sat facing eachother, and a massive wall of text

I get the feeling that creating dramas/slice of life seems much harder than crafting complex fantasy stories. Fujimoto is only interested in making dramas these days, he doesn't even care about action anymore. It seems like creating dramas carries more prestige among the literati which is likely why his work is being adapted by some of Japan greatest directors. Are you already thinking about doing a SOL piece? Did you find it more difficult?

One interesting thing is that in Osamu Tezuka's own story, towards the end of his career he also tried to prove himself as a great drama writer (ayako). Ultimately, I think that at some point, most authors feel this need to create realistic drama. I wouldnt say that creating drama automatically makes you good I'm not the biggest fan of Asano manga, but I think the dramas of Urasawa, Shuzo Oshimi, and Taniguchi are good. There are authors who can sustain their work solely through drama, but they seem to be far above average.

There is no general rule for this kind of stuff, it all depends on the story beat you are on and what info you want to get across. Like I assume your pic is supposed to be an insult towards the author but imagine an alternative where those two pages are spread out across an entire chapters worth of pages. For us who draw we might appreciate the art but as an AUTHOR that might be fucking hell and also piss of your audience(I know this cause the last couple of Frieren chapters did this before it went on Hiatus and it pissed me off). In that sense just biting the bullet and having a bunch of text for two pages so there can be room for some shit to actually happen in the next couple of pages might be worth it in the long run.
Now I wouldnt START OUT your story with a huge exposition/lore dump but if you get far in your story the audience will forgive you for putting in a wall of text if it serves the story.
An action scene might be better off with simple phrases, a comedic scene might need a good balance between words and drawings, a somber moment might require no words. But it is entirely dependent on your goals.
However worth noting that in general for writing(yes including actual books) is knowing how to break shit up. Even for something as boring as a fucking essay an entire wall of text is intimidating to even the most pretentious of readers. In the same way you break up your writing into segments and paragraphs you do it for comics with panels like what anon mentioned >>7979060 Another example is unironically your pic. You labeled the pic "words x words" but objectively there are a bunch of drawings that break up the bubbles and give em context. Even if the autrhor couldnt fit an actual character in the panel they still drew a background or used small chibi heads, etc.

Togashi is practically a cripple at this point, considering he has been borderline dying for nearly three decades. >>
>>7979069
They both have their unique difficulties, but it's much easier to make shlocky fantasy/sci-fi than it is to shit out even a bad drama. It's easy to make a fantasy story about "this happened, and because of that this happened, and because of that this happened" because a lot of the things that happen in those stories is physical; you could replace the characters with robots who only make rational choices or choices convenient to the plot, and everything would be the same. Some people even operate under the assumption that this is good writing; these people are stupid.

Meanwhile a drama - even a pretty bad one - needs the characters to matter. When you make a drama and all the characters could be replaced by other characters and nothing changes, or you make a slice of life where reading about the character's lives is not interesting, you have created something that is BELOW the "it's shit but people will eat it up" bar. Not that that's stopped people.

Writing characters thinking things is harder than writing characters doing things, in the abstract.

I understand this thread knows its way around screen tones and ink, so I'm asking here for help

How was this shadow effect on the violin was achieved?
This manga was released in 1984, when digital touching up was very rare, so it was entirely physical. The only technological parts of this art were the printers using Ben Day dots and shit to save ink. Do you think ink was first put down, and then erased/drawn over? Or was it done as it seems - just drawn very carefully? It has a very liquid-like quality at its edges.

I agree about that classroom scene's screentone, I even spent extra time to try to clean it up (and it's still messy). Whenever I do a big establishing shot with a lot of values/tones, it ends up messy as I tune the linework.

I think the solution is to work in greyscale then convert to tones for big scenes. I will try that next time see how it goes. Pic unrelated, just one of my fav pages from ch. 6

Pretty sure both of these pages were penned by Albert Dorne, who mostly worked in advertising, but has a certain storytelling to his art I think we could all learn from. He could tell with a picture what it takes me a whole page to communicate, he's REALLY good. It's tragic he died so young; this book was one of his last works.

>>7979843
Hell yeah, anon
I'd recommend doing the studying in bits and pieces - despite the name, I've never used the famous artists course as a course, and it's designed for people who were trying to enter the art industry over half a century ago, rather than the modern artist. This is one of the good things about the book - that it's very practical, and concerned with actually getting work done for clients on a deadline - but also means it's necessarily like homework and covers a lot of things that the modern artist might not care about.

That's a good thing in a way though - this book really is comprehensive, it has everything. I flip through it sometimes and find things I've never seen before. It's 945-some pages, though I mostly use pages 150-250. I've been studying the face section since late 2020.

I think his head's too small in a way that doesn't make him seem intimidating or large. I also think that hurtshis design since the only really recognizable parts of his design - the star shaped scar on his head - are contained ON his head, so by shrinking his head you hide the parts that make him stand out. Otherwise, I think it's a very vanilla design which isn't necessarily a problem if you're going for a more grounded realistic vibe.

My main complaint with this art is just that your drapery is very distracting - the shadows don't fall evenly, so my eye is darting all over the place distracted by needless detail.

You can, but how your character looks WITHOUT composition/angle tricks is important. You should emphasize the good parts of your character designs even when your character is standing stock still at a straight-on angle. No one looks their best when they're standing like a default pose in a 3D modelling program, but if your character is actively hiding their good bits from that angle, you need to revise.

I wouldn't disagree if not for the fact he just doesn't look good with a tiny head as-is. The guy's like ten or eleven heads tall and three heads wide at the shoulders. Even really tall characters only look about eight heads tall, and that often comes with a thicker neck to make them seem more like they're big and buff rather than just small-headed.

>>7979934
>>7979935
I don't actually think your linework is boring. There's some fun stuff going on here. I think your main issue is that it's too busy - you don't conserve detail well or easily fold a lot of information into something quickly readable. You'd benefit a lot from using more large blots of darkness like you did around the binoculars, and thickening your hatching as it approaches the harsh shadows, to give the impression of receding light.

You'd also do a lot better with having more emptiness on your page - look at that first panel of the first page and how much is going on in it. The trees have a ton of detail on the wood, there's tons of lines used to define the hats and chairs and the waves in the water and the other bits of garbage. It directs the eye AWAY from the focal point of the picture; the two people standing in the middle. This goes for all your panels, and also for your drapery and shadow-work; the folds should direct the eye like arrows, and the shadows should be large spots on the page that says "Don't look at this" or "Look at this."

You must spend a lot of your time doing all these little lines and details, and it's a disservice to yourself to put in so much time and effort to ultimately make something worse. You can do more with less!

I'm going through my folders and pulled out this image, which I think is a good comparison point of conserve detail. Kishimoto used a lot of lines in this image to detail the wood and hatch the blood, but it all reads as one big chunk, and the empty space given by - say - the darkness of the pool of blood, highlights the figures standing in it.

But I'm (and you were) talking about the character design. A mistake in the proportions is beside the point. It's not going to be difficult to recognize the only fucking character with a big star on his forehead.

I assumed it (the odd proportions) were a stylistic decision rather than a mistake since I only had one image of him. That was a mistake on my part, but I draw characters with weird proportions a lot so I'm sympathetic to the "no it's actually intentional I swear I know what a human looks like" school of design

Yeah definitely true, looking at some of the comics ive been using as reference, they dont have alot of detail except around the important bits.

I did these pages a month or so ago, and have been doing some short comics between like picrel, where the gardens alot less detailed, and i think you see the 2 figures better. ( there were alot of other problems in picre, so I'll probably play around with it before I post it)

I'll cope and add that since its gonna be in color, I'll have the 2 men in a different lighter color, but having the rest be darker, sorta defeats the purpose of me putting in all the details

>>7979944
>>7979945
I do agree that its pretty small and hard to tell as it is. Its gonna be purple when I color it, so itll stand out more, but still having the head be bigger will help

>>7979948
The weird proportions are probably cause it was also sorta weird pose I didnt capture right, the guy i got the pic from had his shoulders have raised in an unnatural way, that looked cool, but again, probably didnt capture it right

This definitely looks better. I imagine it was a lot faster to draw too! The more and more I learn about art the more I realize that Simple Is Best should always be my motto. Simple art is easier, faster, and more resonant with an audience. I have a soft spot for maximalist art, but, we're not Adolf Wolfi here.

This page also draws attention to you not always using shadows right - consider the two figures in the bottom panel. Ambient occlusion says there should be a bunch of darker spots under their feet and around the dress, but it isn't here. Not all artists use shadows like that - I've recently been studying Suehiro Maruo, who's one of my favorite artists, and he often doesn't use ambient occlusion. Look at the figures in this page, for example. But you have occlusion shadows in other places in the art, like under the chin and under the rim of the fountain, so it's inconsistently applied here.

All art is derived from reality. I think it'd do you good to think about what parts of reality you're bringing over, and which parts you're cutting out.
>>
>>7979956
Very true, also dam that looks beautiful as well. Also yeah the first page above took me like 5 hours which I was pretty happy with

And yeah defintiely value in what to include or not, we fill in the rest, thats why people rarely draw anime girls noses, we fill in the rest. Being lazy in some aspect is the way to go, look at picrel, theyve got a show on Amazon right now
>>
>>7979949
>they dont have alot of detail except around the important bits.
It's easy to fall into obsessing over how much you need to add to better illustrate the thing you're trying to draw but when it comes to adding texture, you'd be surprised at what adding a few well-placed lines can do. It's a "smarter, not harder" deal. Check out like some of the old 70s and 80s Marvel and DC stuff, they were pretty good at it and went for a decnt simple but relatively realistic approach to art style. They also made good use of minimizing necessary background details like the other anon mentioned.
>>
>>7979959
Working twice as hard does not necessarily mean you'll make something twice as good! That goes extra for working four times or eight times as hard. Invincible is even GOOD, can you believe that?

That page I posted is mostly a filtered photograph which was touched up, as I understand. But yeah, Maruo's one of my biggest inspirations.

It's a good trick, since that's how it works in real life. If you're looking at a floor and notice a bump in it, you only saw the bump because the light is hitting the far side of it in a different way than its hitting the near side. Same for dirt bumps and potholes and grass and gravel. Technically everything is just light bouncing off of things differently depending on how they're shaped.

Split the first panel into two.
The second one will have the content of the current first panel. Somewhat mashed together.
Make a new first panel that's just an establishing shot of the three characters, from a distance and at an angle. Draw background/environment in it. Expressions are okay but no dialog unless you move one of the speech bubbles onto it, like the "what is this chi" one.

What do editors even do
I've heard some people say their editors advise them on writing, and I've heard others say editors advise them on the market conditions and what people will want out of a story (read: "put this in, it'll sell us more"), and I've heard others say editors actively reject some drafts and then force changes. What's the role of an editor?
>>
>>7980713
editors give feedback on the work and do the actual editing work too (eg the final typesetting, all the stuff involved with actually putting the work in the publication and auxiliary stuff related to said publication). generally speaking, they get bonuses for works they're in charge of doing especially well, so they're invested in your success.
they're also the author's liaison with the publication's leadership, who might have requests of their own.
generally speaking they're your coworker, not your boss. you have no actual obligation to act on their input, though a lot of the time it'd be silly not to. but they're humans, not robots. they're capable of making mistakes or letting ego get in the way just like anybody is. knowing market conditions and stuff is both a part of their job and a natural consequence of it. they see a lot of works succeed and fail, after all. they have the best vantage point to observe market trends.

You've probably heard this before but your pages and art in general would benefit greatly from foreshortening and more dynamic lines, as it is they feel pretty stiff and flat. Try doing timed exercises on gesture to maybe get a feel of basic motion and the logic behind it. Its kinda hard to explain without sounding like some theatre kid using a bunch of buzzwords but thats basically it, maybe looking at animation frame by frame could also help.

>But he takes long enough so he should have plenty of time to pace shit better.
There's only so much physical page space available. Spreading it across more pages just means introducing more page space, stretching the work out to deliver the same amount of information. That's an option, but it means delivering the same amount of information in more time, not less.
>There shouldn't be boring parts and you shouldn't have to plan for there to be boring parts.
Boring to you, maybe. While I'm not too interested in the parts where it's just characters bantering, like in the previous batch of chapters, I rather like the dense segments of character's internal debates and working through whatever predicament they're in. Even this page shows us information that might be important down the line; that is, Beyond having launched many lawsuits within the Kakin judicial system, that they'd all been shot down, and that the Supreme Magistrate herself had shown up to deliver the news and the records of them. That Beyond knows the Supreme Magistrate personally. And that Beyond, Tiger and Saru (the traitor among the Zodiacs, remember) are now occupied reading through them/checking them for security risks. This is interesting to me.

I've never read any Euro comics. Now i'm reading Blacksad. It's the Shawshank Redemption of Euro comics.
Anyway the compression of story telling is insane, most scenes last for only 2-3 pages, there is not a ton of text, not more than 5-6 panels per page, often less. No blank backgrounds.
People talk a lot about western illustration vs Japanese animation approaches.
Is Blacksad an example of perfect execution of the western Illustration style? Not sure if they can hold this level over several books, im only reading the first chapter rn.
Anyway, my initial thought was, it's so much less bloated compared to your average manga. Not sure if it's just the novelty, but it feels like i've never experienced such density in storytelling in any manga.

I notice that with alot of western and euro comics, definitely right in that the scenes are shorter, less text explaining whats going on in the good ones. not certain wat i enjoy more.

fights in comics tend to only last a few pages and dont tend to flow or show every movement, just a couple of different poses of 2 guys punching. its worse in superhero shlock cause its just guys punching each other through buildings. Mangas actually show buildup and the fight has a flow, in that its not just random poses of them fighting, but it goes from one punch to thet other. probelm is they tend to speak way too much

I'm not sure how real the "western versus japanese storytelling" discussion actually is considering I could pluck any number of artists from the back catalog of Shounen Jump who probably have a highly compressed style, and similarly any number of highly decompressed comic books.

I feel the differences there are mostly because of different expectations; people really do buy comics weekly in Japan and are totally fine with a week where not much happens, meanwhile comic book releases - especially big ones - are always expected to be full of juicy tidbits and important moments. A lot of comic runs are also pretty short, so they gotta get in and get out ASAP.
>>
>>7982328
Not sure i can be considered a fan, but i surely was a weeb for many years. I was even collecting. Bloat and filler is the main reason i dropped a lot of titles and finally manga in general. When i see One Piece pages somewhere posted, i get war flashbacks from all the bloat on the page.
Yeah, they may like it, or not, the most popular manga publishing formats make bloat unavoidable, it seems.
>>
>>7982332
Yeah, the action is a little static. Effective, but a little static. Blacksad has a classic Hollywood movie vibe, that's how action is depicted in those movies. Eastern kung fu movies are a lot more dynamic, in this regards.
>>7982335
American comic is mostly slop, maybe even worse than Japanese. The Japanese do not have a non-slop publishing method at all. High quality stories, printed on expensive paper in color, what Americans call Graphic Novel does not exist at all.
>Shounen Jump who probably have a highly compressed style
Being compressed is not a good thing on itself, it can be very strange, with no flow. Many noob comics are like that.
Blacksad is compressed but very, very effective at the same time, that's what surprised me the most.

aren't comics floppies are sold indidually while manga chapters are sold as part of anthologies where the reader generally reads more than one series in each issue

It lacks some motion blur effect, but would a Japanese version of this shootout be much better?
>>
>>7982344
It would have more speed lines, might feel more intense automatically
>>
>>7982352
Yeah, that what i meant, some sort of smearing. A hard line for something thats moving fast, is not very immersive, it's like a stop-motion frame.
>>
>>7982360
NTA but I think that's pretty interesting
It casts the scene in a more photographic way - it's as if we're seeing a bunch of snapshot moments of something, rather than actually seeing it unfold in front of us. It creates a sense of distance. It's like how sometimes movies will put serene music over scenes of hardcore violence, to create tonal dissonance.
>>
>>7982360
It's not immersive but it immediately conveys the sense of "whoa! something's happening" which is why it's so prevalent. That page is pretty cool though, I don't think every action scene needs speed lines everywhere and it's always nice to see artists who can legibly convey a series of things happening in their own style.
>>
>>7982361
>how sometimes movies will put serene music over scenes of hardcore violence, to create tonal dissonance
Kino when it's deserved but too many movies for the past decade or so spam needle drops so it's become completely saturated.
>>
>>7982361
>>7982363
Yeah, the page is greate, i think the inteaktion with the surroundings, like the lamp and the very nice soses are selling it.
>but would a Japanese version of this shootout be much better?
That was a genuine question, not a rhetorical one. A Japanese version would convey more movement, i'm sure, but if you drag it out, it may feel less snappy.
>>
>>7982370
It may look more aesthetically pleasing but it might not fit the themes of the comic better
I haven't read it - I'm just speculating about why you'd make the deliberate choice to draw a page like this. It wasn't done by accident. Maybe the rest of the work has nothing to do with the study of violence, so it's totally out of place here.

People in manga industry often say you only need to do the bare minimum when it comes to 'art budget' (作画コスト) and it doesn't really need to be exceptional.
What matter is your story is interesting and you can quickly churn out new chapter as often as possible without your art deteriorating.

So what is your definition of "bare minimum"?
Does copy-pasted art bother you?
Does props/building that are clearly just CSP assets bother you?
Does AI background bother you?
>>
>>7982426
Pajeet, bloody why have you put an ai slop filter over Niheis art, you bloody fucking?
>>
>>7982426
AI backgrounds are a bad idea because they add things to the art that the artist does not have control over. It adds visual clutter and intent-less business. Nothing on your page should be put there without some degree of purpose and intent.

Assets are fine but not ideal - if that's REALLY what you need to do to fill out a page, so be it.

Copy pasted art is fine because you made everything there. As long as you use it intelligently, it's no different than copying a passage from one part of a book to a later part, when - for example - a character is reminiscing about that part. Of course all smart writers will put a spin on the flashback, adding detail and context that wasn't there before, rather than just reiterating what the audience already knows. Smart artists should also do this.
>>
>>7982426
>what is your definition of "bare minimum"?
Some glimpses of background and a few talking heads with speech bubbles covering the page
>>
>>7982499
>Some glimpses of background
Exactly. Creative use of negative space to imply more background is great, and it also avoids overcluttering a panel with visual noise (even if the visual noise is extremely well drawn). Its why I could read a ton of Otoyomegatari or Witch Hat Atelier but something like Berserk makes my eyes tired after a chapter or two, even though I greatly enjoy all three mangas. I love how detailed and well constructed Berserk is but sometimes it feels like my eyes have nowhere to rest, everything is so crazily detailed. Don't even get me started on comics like One Piece; I have no idea how anybody could read it. Every single panel I randomly look at feels like I just witnessed the aftermath of somebody dropping all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle onto the floor, it all feels so insanely busy.
>>
>>7982344
Blacksad is a crime noir, so that's what it's trying to emulate. What I find appealing about the fight scenes in the story is that they always feel chaotic but in a way that's extremely readable and clear. If you wanted to add speedlines and smears you would have to rework every action sequence to accomodate it then I think it would no longer be Blacksad. The essence of manga is the grand spectacle, being over the top in some way or another. I love manga specifically because it is over the top juvenile grandeur- I just don't think you can just throw speedlines over this and say it looks or feels better.

Whatever amount it takes for you to say to yourself "this works". Stop fucking thinking too hard about it. Sometimes a barebones shitty sketch of a drawing works, sometimes its a drawing that you know will require hours of practice/research to get right, its all fucking story dependent, and the more you get good at it the more you know how to prioritize shit but its all story dependent.

there are lots of options, do a image that reflects the whole story, or the mood, you could even pick a panel in your comic and ellaborate on it, i dont know how to help without knowing more about your project.

Your pages are coming along really nicely! One thing that made me do a double take was the final panel of the second page, where the lines around the girl's wrist and cuff kinda merge with René's arm and makes her arm look transparent. The bold line around her wrist in particular.

Very nitpicky stuff though, overall everything is looking sweet!

Any tips for designing a uniform for a battle shonen like Naruto or Bleach?
>>
>>7983079
Stylish and functional and/or cool and sexy
>>
>>7983079
Keep it simple - you will have to draw this outfit a hundred times in a hundred different angles and poses, so do NOT make it complicated.

Naruto is a good example because it does this excellently; it mostly has its characters dressed in an outfit that covers their whole body and is solid color with some consistent details to break it up. Consider the Akatsuki uniform just being a long black cloak - all you need to do to draw that is just draw a kite and fill it in with black ink, then draw some clouds on top. On the topic of those cloud patterns, patterns are something Naruto makes very good use of. They're inherently easy to draw at any angle since you know how they're supposed to look; look at how much shit in Naruto is just "a spiral" or "a wood texture."

For a reminder of how extremely you have to simplify things; Naruto was drawn with goggles for the first couple chapters but Kishimoto had to remove them, because they took too long to draw. THAT is how simple we're talking about. When you're drawing your character sometimes literally a hundred times on one panel, this is how simple you need to make things.
>>
>>7983079
Extremely simple, practical, and cool. You are going to be drawing this again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and

Pig anon, I'm looking at Selka's closeup in the bottom of your page and her torso seems off. People are people, so there's going to be a lot of staring at breasts whenever people get a chance - for Selka's closeup, her breasts appear to be simultaneously too high in terms of placement as well as............ lumpy/bumpy. I'm a bit confused, since when you drew the giant lady (goddess?) her breast area looked perfectly fine.

>>

Nta but like he said, the mood or whatever. Like if it's supposed to initially come off as melancholic or deep or something, one might recommend the landscape taking up the majority of the pic with the character appearing kind of small but still recognizable, or if it's edgy then maybe the character from the chest up with their forearm against the wall in kind of a side view with their head hanging a bit and a strained look on their face and mostly red and black coloring regardless of what the actual colors of the person and environment should be, or if it's like a tournament thing maybe a view from behind the character as they are just walking out of an enclosure into the main stadium area as they approach the ring, stuff like that. If generic covers aren't your thing, instead of looking at manga and anime covers maybe look at books and movie covers or promo art and illustrations in general. Sometimes it's better to look outside of direct references so the visual language isn't too cannibalistic.

The only "trick" is zooming in.
You don't have to draw them in one go, you can draw them in smaller lines that connect.

These are all great!
Tone is important... and it's tough to capture!
The world of this story is VERY dark and quite violent and psychosexual, but it's got a good humor about it. It's a drama/romance, so it must balance both aspects - I can't just go full horror cover here as much as I want to! I've got to have a sense of tenderness, and a tension between the love interests. It's an ensemble piece, so we should have multiple characters on the cover, even if it's dominated by the main two.

A major inspiration for this is Deadwood - favorite show, and it has some decent promotional imagery I could crib from. But promos have never been the best part of that series. I think you've helped me put together a good visual image here, anon! Now to iterate a hundred times.
>>
>>7983488
Kind of. Two methods I can think of are either a style where the bubbles have an organic quality to them like if the lines are slightly bumpy so you have room to not be perfect, or as a fellow bubble drawer what I do is use the bubble draw tool in CSP. I start out with the lines very close to the text, then draw outward more and more until it looks half decent, the tool automatically attaches your addition to the existing bubble if you draw from and to it so you're just drawing and don't have to erase previous lines, there's also a bubble tail tool but you don't need that, you can draw the tail right off the bubble with the same tool you used to make the bubble.

B is blatant porn clothing. It is for porn, the reader sees that and expects it to happen at some point and soon.
C is for those adventure/action series where it's ecchi bait or "sometimes there is a hentai scene somewhere once every 20 chapters" kind of story where the reader still expects NSFW to happen.

Traditionally, when you're drawing you should lock your wrist and turn the paper as you go along. Digitally csp has other bubble making tools that allow you to adjust the shape so you don't have to use a 'circle tool'. Beyond that I don't know.

Forgot to mention, it can attach its layer to a text layer. What I do is type the dialogue, make sure text layer is selected (I only use one) when finished, then draw the dialogue bubbles which creates white inside the bubble under the text so you don't need to erase art or anything under it, just know that using only one layer for all text and bubbles will make it hard to use the select tool if you need to make any corrections in post, but I rasterize the entire layer after to simplify it so that doesn't bother me. My way is the retard way but it might work for you too.
