>>7975727Ongoing Contest:KODANSHA MANGA ACADEMY AWARDmanga-academy.kodansha.com/award/mangaka-discovery/>Deadline is July 22>You keep all rights to manga and only caveat is IF you get stuff like the Grand Prize you Kodansha has first on publishing deal(and they get final say on no if no deal ends up getting made) so not too much downsidesAlso if you happen to be in LA for Anime Expo this year Kadokawa is doing portfolio/comic reviews:kadokawaworldmanga.com/onsite/Also they are doing online portfolio reviewskadokawaworldmanga.com/online/However Im less sure about that one cause theres no deadlines and it doesnt say shit about what they do with the content that you give them. Terms state that its just a chance for editors to look at people's work so its not like a contest where you may give up rights but it just seems weird what they may do(like especially if they just leave you silent) but I dont think they are shady enough to just fucking do blatant copyright theft so its probably worth checking out
Starting this thread with a drawing to get the productivity hopefully going in the thread
>Be me>Bonafide weeb who has only read manga for years>Out of curiosity, I decide to check out how western comics were like before their total collapse through the mid 90s>I start reading popular capeshit runs like Chris Claremont's X-Men and Excalibur, Steve Dikto's Spiderman, John Byrne's Fantastic Four, Frank Miller's Daredevil and Elektra content, Walt Simonson's Thor, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, culminating with me reading Watchmen and DKR now that I have good basics in regard to classic superhero comics>THEY'RE ALL BETTER WRITTEN THAN THE VAST MAJORITY OF BATTLE SHOUNENWhat happened? How did the mainstream american comics market manage to permanently destroy itself and never come back healthy despite being perfectly alive, successful and exciting back in the 80s?
>>7975747Comics collapsed around the 90s entirely because of greedThey stopped many new issues and started rereleasing limited editions and collectors editions to pinch more coins out of their loyal fanbaseComics became a ponzi schemeActual talents left because they were neglected by the pen pushersThe fanbase had enough of being milked and stopped buyingThe talents that were driven out of comics turned to cartoons and animationThe comic fans followed suitIt was not a coincidence that the comic book crash happened at the same time as the golden age of cartoons.Same thing is happening again with Indie films

>>7975975I had a good time reading it, thanks for sharingI felt that the conclusion dragged on a bit too much considering the length of the main plot, some things felt overexplained by thenyou could easily trim 4-5 pages and it would retain the same punch

>>7975975Kek this was a fun short story. I guess the reading flow make up for the art. Not saying it's bad but still has a lot of work to do. Also are you from Australia
>>7975890your art is really awesome but why do you use such blinding colors?!
>>7976150thank you so much>but why do you use such blinding colors?!fuck man message received, from now on I'll just post the pages black & white
>>7976162NTA, but I think you just need to use a darker blue.
About to start working on Chapter 5 of my comic but would appreciate any feedback on what I have so far. I also have to say I respect a lot of the creators here since your processes seem so much more structured than mine. Hoping I pick something up along the way.https://thefoolsjourney.thecomicseries.com/
>>7976249Also quick question for my creators:How do you handle major plot deviations? The story I initially planned to go with for the chapter ended up changing (imo for the better) which in turn kinda detours everything I had set up. How do you go about integrating these detours into the plot you started with?
>>7976262You can pull off any plot twist imaginable so long as it makes sense.A good way to do this is with foreshadowing, or just things that happen earlier in the story that explain, tease, justify, etc. what happens later. You don't have to actually plan for these, though it's better if you do, you can often add meaning to otherwise insignificant moments later on. Maybe you introduce a new character that's super important... but to make it so you didn't just invent them out of the blue, instead re-use an unimportant character who they met and had an unremarkable interaction with earlier on. Now it looks like you planned the whole thing from the start.
skecthing the new arc
>>7976249i couldn't get past page 6 dude. Cant stomach the darkie zoomer dialogue.
>>7976542I appreciate you giving it a shot either way

>>7976088>draw a girl>call it a boyevry timGood work on that new page though keep it up
>>7975761>so what's your kid doing these days?>oh they're drawing comics>oh! like Garfield? or Superman?>no, like japanese maynga>maynga? like those japanese animes?>yeah! here, take a look (pulls out phone)>oh wow!happened a few times and this is how it actually went. my parents were proud of me, even if i don't think really got it.
>>7975747comic industry treated artists like shit and consumers like idiots so it collapsed, its not even a new thing, jack kirby famously left comics to work in animation, which tells you how horrible the conditions in cape comics were when the famously exploitative animation industry was seen as the kinder safer bet
>>7976162time to reuse panels
>>7976063I love these pages, the action reads really well, >>7976162i don't know what everyones deal is, i thought the orange was absolutely fine. >>7971763 cont.
>>7977283awesome, my first thought is her "NO!" should be on the same panel as the knight asking, then her new expression in panel 4 would be for the next thing she says. My autism makes me hate how multiple moods exist within one page but you only see one facial expression (the most recently one) which is highly common in western comics.
>>7977283Nice compositionLiterally ever single thing on the page draws you to the tits
>>7977338I boob want to boob know what boob happens after boob her rescue boob but each boob panel is so boobacious I boobily fear I cannot boob the boob boob boob boobing when boobedGreat work artwise as usual anon.
>>7976063This comic look more old anime-look with it's 'girly-designed boy' character and rails. I just like your idea of a boy who doesn't look like a boy. Good for you>>7977283I like how I intrigued by the drawing of the boobs and how central they're.Btw, I'm new here. I coming from /co/ and I like to have some feedback for my comic here. This board seems sincere so.
>>7976088dropped
>>7976064>>7976596>>7977369While it's amusing that you all think the character looks like a girl, it's not actually what I want.I want him to be immediately obviously a boy. I don't want to upset anyone expecting a girl only to find a boy.I'm definitely not giving myself an easy time by making them long haired and in a skirt, but I think it can be done. This particular story doesn't feature much dialogue, I hope that in situations where the character is able to show their personality more, it becomes more clear that they are a boy, and that if I can convey that well in chapter 1 (soon™) it will never be a problem.
>>7977397Nah it reads fine, cant speak for anons but I was just shitposting. Like at most it reads like those old cute anime boys like Inuyasha and the like. Dont go forcing a different look on me cause of my shitpost of a comment
>>7977369cute, even with the art style I don't feel too confused in most of the strips. The sense of humor is decent, being non sequiter and deadpan. The low art skills doesnt bother me or make it hard to understand your pacing and intent, and I see improvement since the start. I think studying art on the side will help the comic since it seems to be about your view of the world and covers whatever topics you feel like. You copyied the face here for the last two panels but I think it makes it funnier and delivers the intent better, just dont make it a habit since I think your charm is critical for this comic. There will be a time where it seems like the comics getting worse when you get better anatomy and everyone starts being stiff, you'll have to push through that.this was my favorite strip, and the faces in each panel feel charming. I can say redrawing this comic with godlike art wouldnt make it funnier. But I'm looking at it as an artist so my opinion probably doesn't matter.
>>7977417Inuyasha is definitely the main stylistic inspiration. Along with stuff like Saint Seiya, It was definitely an era of long haired pretty boys.
>>7977397I'd say he looks extremly androgynous, which naturally means he reads as feminine to most people. Femininity takes a lot more maintainence than masculinity - you can be masculine just by doing nothing and letting your body grow, while femininity needs you to regularly shave, foundation, and condition.Your boy looks like a cherub.
>>7977418>>7977418thanks for the critique. I don't think I care too much about the art. If I would, the comics would definitely took too long to complete. I learn that I should focus on my comic going to deliver it's message than 'ohh nice art but terrible facial expression and body movement'.
>>7977439thats a good attitude to have, I only bring it up because plenty of people on /co/ worry too much about art skill and die in the uncanney valley. And by better art helping the comic, I meant it will be more expressive and evolve more and you'll enjoy reading back on it to see eras of your life when making it.
Been playing with more digital-only tools latelyNot really happy with how these panels came out. These harsh colors and thin, criss-crossing lines are NOT working together. What do we think?
>>7977468>plenty of people on /co/ worry too much about art skillAre we visiting the same /co/? If anything it seems like anons there couldn't give the smallest most single iota of a shit about trying to actually have any art skills at all. This isn't meant as some kind of cross-board dig, it really isn't. Just my genuine two cents having been there several times.>>7977482>thin, criss-crossing lines??????
I've been thinking of learning a bit of Blender to set up composition for pages but I don't understand shit
Almost done; I just need to clean some things up. Not sure about the background- guess I'll just KUBOOOO it like usual.

>>7975747Japan produces something if it sells or they think it will sell. America produces something to push a message which is more important than whether it sells or not. That's the only real difference.
>>7976535lets try not take 3 years to finish an arc this time
>>7978234Hey, that looks nice, altarusia anon! I like the coloring.
>>7975983Yeah, that's fair. I wanted to cram in all the individual endings since they were all amusing in my head, bloat be damned. >>7976139Nice, all things considered readability making up for art is pretty awesome to hear. Also, no, I am American.
>>7977939wrong Japan produces something if the editors like it and see your shit as unique enough to publish, then if you didn't make enough sales = you likely fucked up and won't get another shot at it, another is the competitive model of "weekly" and "monthly" releasing magazines where you first have to win some kind of entrance competition to get hired to the business, then after that you get to do your work and if you manage to survive the votes to not get axed you keep working as a published author, if not they might put you to assisting others instead if you still want to draw for a living. its a really effective way to basically cut losses early.
>>7978234The sky is the one that's sharp, the castle is blurred/blended nicely, why do you do this to yourself, why? having a "non-blurred" sky makes it more distracting to the yes than the on that is blended in a balanced fashion.
>>7978284>wrong Japan produces something if the editors like it and see your shit as unique enough to publishand editorial's goal is to release things that sell so you're effectively just rewording what he said but pretending it's a disagreement>you likely fucked up and won't get another shot at ityou do get multiple shots you know, it's not "one strike and you're out"
