fig and color study. thought I'd do a couple but this one took me the whole day

very cute doragon but your lineweight logic is a bit inconsistent. like you try to do a thick outline for the silhouette but skip certain areas like some of the hair and hands. or you have the toenails with really bold dark redrawn when the original more greyish sketch lines would have made more sense. Generally you wanna ease up with the thick lines inside the main silhouette.

>>7983849
moai
>>
>>7983841
This is entirely subjective so feel free to disregard but I actually really like the previous version with the messy linework.
I think it adds a certain dynamic quality to the drawing and it also gives the effect of more varied line weight.
I do understand why you would want cleaner lines though if you are going for the more polished look.
Good job with the colors and shading.

>How do I improve on this?
I think that largely depends on the style you are trying to achieve.
The drawing is decent on its own and any advice would need to take into account the stylistic direction that you want to move towards.
Do you have any examples of what you want your art to look like?

I like her face and pose she's doing, it's a good idea.
The first issue I noticed are the boobs. They look weird, the surface they attach to on the torso looks too small. She also has no pectoral muscles.
Her protruding stomach makes it look like she's suffering from kwashiorkor. (pic related)
I think the cape should have more folds around the boob and its huge nipple.
The perspective on her right arm looks iffy.
Her thighs look too thick.
I like your style, the drawing would be appealing if the anatomy was more conventional.
I appreciate the feedback you give to everyone ITT.

I used to think this way, but I'm beginning to think things are flipping. Modern leftism has become uniform and orthodox. It seems there is an expectation that leftist art be as ugly as possible. There's a lot of talented people reviving traditional art, especially with the introduction of AI.
>>
>>7984202
i like your stuff, don't get discouraged because of the lack of yous
>>
>>7984246
To the extent that they even still have meaning, "left" and "right" have kind of flipped in a lot of ways. "Leftists" now are people with high disgust reactions, high need for morality and order, concerned with social cohesion, etc. "Rightists" might still be racist, but in every other way they're a lot more similar to the "leftists" from 50-60 years ago in terms of being independently minded, questioning authority, etc. You need to be willing to question authority in order to be racist and sexist these days, because anti-racism and anti-sexism just ARE the political orthodoxy.
All that being said, artistic creativity can come from either leftists or rightists.

Big improvement, nice work. The boobs would have more appeal if their shape was "retrousse" (see pic), with the nipples pointing up, and the upper area was smooth instead of a hard angle against her pectorals. The latter makes her look like she has bolt-ons rather than soft naturals.

i think its obvious that you need fundamentals but whats mostly weird here is the arms of the guy in the back, im not sure if hes trying to choke him out or if hes hugging him. if its the later the arms should probably go down the guys torso instead of being raised straight towards the front like that. Also the guy in the front is drawn in a way that implies hes closer to the camera, his whole torso is fully visible when his backside should be somewhat covered by the guy in the back.

its ok to color tho just have fun

Rendering = answering "which way does this surface face?" over and over.
That's the whole game. Light comes from somewhere. Every patch of surface either faces it (light), turns away (shadow), or is in between (mid).
A gradient exists because the surface curves — it's gradually rotating from facing-light to facing-away.

So the process, for any object:
1. Decide the light direction. One arrow. Write it in a corner if you have to.
2. Group values first: what's the shadow side, what's the light side? Two values. Hard split. This is a decision about the form, not something you find in the ref.
3. Where the form curves, transition between them. Sharp corner = sharp transition. Round curve = soft transition. Edge softness describes geometry.
4. Details last, and they obey the groups. A marking in the shadow side stays darker than the same marking in the light side. This is what people mean by "form over local color."

1)Post your doodle in a magma canvas with free account
2) Use grid and align with drawing
3)Hide everything except grid, screenshot grid and paste screenshot on a new separate empty layer ,aligning the raster carefully with the actual grid layer
4) Click File > Export As>PSD
5) Open in software of choice and continue drawing or painting
Alternatively you can simply continue drawing on Magma or Drawpile which are the superior drawing apps IMO. If you require more dense layer modes or 3D I suggest cracked old PS or CSP 5.0

>>7984522
I think you’re running into stylization problems as you progress. I can see that you keep adding more and more details as you learn, but you don’t seem to know when to remove things. There’s too much emphasis on the clavicles, armpits, knees, and waist. With the head, you keep stylizing the features while keeping them constrained to the proportions of a realistic head, which makes it feel off. Study more artwork that you like and pay attention to how those artists simplify and abstract forms.

>>7984061
It’s not bad it’s cute, but it feels sterile like done as a chore. Start thinking more about composition, framing, and the background. Even a simple shape in the background can make an image much more intriguing. Backgrounds don’t have to be fully rendered environments, but they should complement the composition.
Start with something simple, frame the figure using the rule of thirds, then begin experimenting with different background shapes and designs. Keep the context of the piece in mind, and post your results.

>>7984112
Keep an eye on tangents, especially around the legs. That tangent at the knee makes the pose look awkward. Also, don't be afraid to use color it’s free, so take advantage of it. The figure could be improved, but at your current level I wouldn’t be too harsh. Drawing hugs and bodies interacting is really difficult, so this is a good attempt. Keep going.

CSP's grids are too cumbersome and don't quite fill up the entire area like Magma's can, they're fast lightweight and can be spammed multiple times within the same their own cropped borders very efficiently. To do the same is much more cumbersome on CSP as the grid always fills up the entire frame or not exactly where you want it.
>>
>>7984659
Addendum, the CSP asset store has some good gridding tools but you have to set those up and dig through your 3D downloaded asset tools each time to really make them work. I'd say best combo is to use grids from magma and 3D modeling in CSP for a hybrid scene building workflow.
>>
>Magma
Legit a piece of garbage. Drawpile is right there
>>
>>7984661
It's only garbage if you use a garbage web browser and dont turn on hardware acceleration. If you use brave or opera it runs better in my experience and for a lot of people the desktop downloadable app works great too. Drawpile is also fantastic and better in terms of multi layer selection, folders, magic wand, smart bucket tools but it doesn't have any perspective grid tools. I've found that what matters most is drawing feel and sketching tools such as grids matter the most for sketching and inking and using whatever software of choice for painting and finishing is usually the most solid option.

Why is it so hard to stylize faces from photos? I've tried following chommang and I've gotten really good at copying his drawings but I can't apply his style to new photos. Do I just keep grinding or do I need to study something in particular?
>>
>>7984774
Usually that means you’re not as confident in the underlying sketch as you should be and you haven’t actually decided where every line should go. You have so many vague scribbly lines that you can IMAGINE a good drawing, but you haven’t actually drawn it yet. So the solution is to simply produce a better and more well-defined sketch.
As for the mechanics of actually producing clean lines in one stroke, you just get better with mileage

>>
>>7984875
Observation: Try to be more conscious about the things you draw in relation to each other. For example how long the arm is compared to the torso, etc, try to measure objects in your reference in relation to other things, i think this is probably the most important fundamental but very often get overlooked. This will help a lot with wonky proportions
Form: Draw 3d shapes in perspective
Draftmanship: It gets better with more experience and it's a waste of time to focus solely on it so just draw anything you like

>I like their faces. It's the coloring that bothers me. SOmethng about it screams "amateur work"
I really like your face style too. I don't think is the coloring that gives you that vibe tho. I think it is about little subtle details in the lineart, that look like "isolated chicken scratch" and the brain makes those little details jump out of the picture. Little details, like the pointy hair, and some lines of skin or clothing folds placed tightly together, etc. Also the brush line that you're using is pretty unforgiving. Many artists hide their shitty lineart with thick and stylish artistic brushes. Your lineart style is like playing in "extra hard mode". But you pulled it off, in my opinion saving tiny details like the pointy hair this is a nicely finished pic. As you said you should move on and keep doing this using the same method, trying to making it simpler and faster, that will make you develop smoother lines and more stylized designs, because you will get used to keep going with your line in one stroke, or fewer strokes, so your mind will make your designs simpler and simpler, tidier and tidier, like when solving those equations when you cross out numbers making the formula simpler, your brain will do the same with your designs and compositions, whatever it is, hair styles, clothing, stuff in general. That's very convenient when doing these lineart cel shade anime style images. Also I added a thing wich is creating very simple and basic methods to ad details like hair reflections or random folds, you can use one gimmicky visual "tool" to add detail to anything, so you can work faster and faster. Also the line brush and the stabilization that I use. Hope it helps

Besides that, more fundies. You can even look up refs for fundies like the krenz cube grid and draw it from memory. Either way, your drawings from imagination are going to be shit until you build a solid visual library, which takes a lot of time and practice

as long as the box is aligned in the vertical and horizontal with the picture plane, you can use a single vp
but the further out you go from the center, the more distorted they'll get, as they leave the cone of vision
but of course, this is just linear perspective, actual human vision makes those verticals and horizontals curve in our peripheral

the other anon is right, you're doing random bs, not one point perspective
according to the roof, the eye level is around the blue line
according to the left table, it's around the red line
and according to the right table, way up top near the roof
choose an eye level, place the vp, then make all depths point to it

lmao you are so retarded, i literally said he was freehanding the perspective because the distortion was nonsensical, and i am not about to analyze the fucking banana ship that i didnt even care to click on because the miniature looked stupid

but at a surface level, the wing in the back doesnt seem to have the same vanishing points as the wing in front and the head of the banana ship (which look like they share the same vanishing point)

and by the way, you dont know shit yet are about to critique the guy who probably made the front wing and head of the ship look quite consistent freehanded? i dont think i can do that shit free handed withoit immense doubt, most people cant draw a figure's limbs without computing the depth axis and proportions or literally copying a reference.

pls dont do, im out of mojo rn and just needed some (you)s.

also lol, people are actually arguing about my art. personally i dont think the leftmost had an egregious perspective problem but its definitely a bit wonky in places so i can see how someone would interprete it as such. the other robot he mentioned does have perspective problems. dont rip out each others throats over this.
>>
>>7985446
most of the problems I see are with proportion and form (most evident in that a lot of the objects they hold feel flat or out of perspective) you're probably aware of it, the girl of the left is not even able to hold the sword as it is
paying more attention to the design and form of the heads would help

i dont think it would get me laughed out considering it was a 10ish minute sketch. the amount of time i spent on drawings is very inconsistent.

i wouldve indeed liked to have you redline the most obvious faults since if youre right i seem to be somewhat blind to it. however im not asking anyone to spend that much effort on my stuff unless out of free will.

anyway, this seems to be quite a hostile interaction. just take a walk. i appreciate most criticism even the harsher ones but ill be honest about what i can relate to and what not and as said, the perspective problem wasnt fully relatable to me on the leftmost robot.

Great save, dude. If you haven't already, check out Sargent. There are so many things to learn from him.

>>7984830
Umm, there are a lot of things here. It feels like you're not truly observing his work. Try again, using this as a guide if you need to. You can even overlay both images and trace them, but the goal is to actually think about and understand his abstractions.

https://x.com/chommang/status/2059648721034559526

Secondly, I'd be wary of his timelapses if you're using them. His work is great, but I'm not so sure about his teaching. For example, his "construction" doesn't really match his final work (I'm not a fan of loomis):

https://x.com/chommang/status/2050554347218755676

It feels more like a performance to sell a course than anything else. I say this because if you're following his timelapses, you may end up making some nonsensical choices, not because I think he's bad or anything.

And finally, your line work is really heavy. Lighten your hand. Not every line has to be dark.

even if you don't intend to include everything into the final picture it can be very beneficial to at least have an idea of what the area look like that we can't see. Like for example here you probably would have realized the ridiculous proportions of the sword handle if you knew how large the sword actually is. And to know how large the sword is you kinda need to know where the floor is. The catgirl and the sword share the same surface they rest on so that's something you have to consider into the pose as a whole. yes it's extra work upfront but it saves you having to guess

I know you're joking but in case anyone is actually persuaded by this, no you wouldn't be. 90% of a drawing looking good is the underlying line drawing, all the rendering and color is just a cherry on top.
>>
>>7985722
Rendering is like 40-50%
>>
The other thread still hasn’t hit image limit you fucking loosers participated in an unsanctioned follow-up I hope you dye!

Rendering 95%. Only other artists or people with a refined eye see the underlying inconsistencies. That is why AI is popular, and that is why many garbage art or artists have thousands of likes/followers.
>>
>>7985708
I have no idea what he means by "symol shading trick" or "sakimichan and the other faggots". I guess take the lines off means to litteraly remove the lineart?

Nihu is popular because he uses AI for rendering.

well, the way i understand it is that fast lines are quick and gestural. they are smooth and beautiful, but hard to control. if you overdo them, your sketches will have too many fault lines and a mess to look at without doing any cleanup.
slow lines are more precise/ deliberate, but they can look rough. they're good for detail and a more thoughtful approach because you don't want your hand to move faster than your mind.
it's good to be aware of and to pace yourself. doing many quick gestures made me think that that's how all drawings should be, so i developed a bad habit of rushing. but now, even when looking at other's art i can see that they drew slower, more deliberately, because their drawings look cleaner.

i recommend drawing tanks from ref first, thats how i learned to understand the basic shapes. once youve done that its quite easy to tinker with them. big forms first, detail later, but i start with the wheels because those are hardest to get down in perspective. for the perspective construction i guess i do whats considered „freehand“ a lot, but you can probably easily construct it in a grid/box.

I probably would have quit drawing if I thought you had to master everything. And a lot of the times, previous steps click when you move on. So if you think you kinda get it, a step later you'll go "oh I totally get that now." why do anime copiers always fuck up the jawline? not too bad tb desu, you consistently fuck up perspective/angle on the torso, and aren't putting the elements of the face in the right places. Look more closely. Have you tried lining your drawings up with the original and adjusting opacity to see where you've gone wrong?
>>
>>7986309
Because we are beginners who
a) haven't yet trained spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination, and
b) don't properly understand the underlying structure of drawing 3d shapes, we are just trying to draw the 2d shapes that we think we see.

While learning shape and vehicle perspective autismo, it's nice to take a break and try drawing the things you actually like to keep you motivated
>>
>>7986311
Genuine question: why do you bother drawing something you don't want to draw? If you want to draw anime women then just draw them instead of doing exercises that you hate. Ultimately all the principles of understanding form and spacial awareness can be trained just the same on figure drawing with the upside of not making you want to neck yourself from boredom as you draw the nth cube

i appreciate the feedback, but i think of these as sketches, loose and imperfect, but fun. i still observe the subject and make an effort, but this is how my eyes see. everyone got their own idea of what a study should be, and believe me i've done perfect copies in the past, i just don't have the patience for those anymore.

Usually you feel like that after a long pause, but it is a placebo effect. You can "truly improve" (learn new things) only by drawing. You're just in a better mental place when you restart drawing after a period of time, you feel refreshed, with lots of fuel in the tank. You really feel like you improved but you're just doing better what you already did "good enough". Pawell was in a really good spot when he stopped drawing. He was doing good stuff.

For me it's not about cubes but learning about the fundamental things I always ignored back in the day. Understanding that stuff is actually kinda valuable and will probably help me in the long run.

I want to eventually invent my own poses and angles instead of mindlessly copying a reference, and I probably need to understand the underlying 3d framework a lot better instead of mindlessly copying 2d shapes.

There are full resolution versions of those paintings later on but due to my lacking prospensity for design I conflated articles to news articles in a magazine like the Private Eye where if they feature a color image they print it as a little postage stamp in the margins - I ought to have considered that unlike a newspaper words shouldn't take precedent over pictures, it's perhaps centring a contrivance before a picture gets an opportunity to act as an explanation for itself which is why I don't do that very often but in this case like the narrative intrigues in a video game I felt it would make the most sense for whatever reason

Wales on the whole is a beautiful place to live and I know you didn't ask but Pembrokeshire in particular is getting dicked over by pointless investments in a tourism sector. In Haverfordwest there's several forever projects costing in excess of millions of pounds to demolish and build over existing historic structures to try and stimulate something the Pembrokeshire landscape is already predisposed to doing like attracting tourists at no benefit to the taxpayer or the average natural citizen either but rather because some dunces in the council are "hugely excited" about it and need to increasingly place it on a "sustainable footing". Then jobs get contested by people from across the entire country and local people can't find work contracts either so in some small sense atleast I need to relate my work to that because I'm part of the problem as a second generation citizen of a family hailing from Surrey

Skellingtons are my substitute for human figures in most of my work I want to say it's partially as an aid to allegory but it's also in large part for a lack of technical ability. T-posing wasn't exactly what I had in mind but if my ideas are communicated poorly that's on me. Agoraphobia or fear is what I was trying to instil in the figure. Just an illustration for the game of course but I held several questions in my mind like what does adhering to a million different theories of value and there is no objective fiscal standard entail psychologically once government is on a domestic level and does consumerism and reticence from other people increase/decrease. I'm of the belief that it would affect people with different predispositions drastically in each direction, some people would become entirely ingrained in the feedback loop of a fabricated consumer culture others might become militant and entirely atheistic to cultural experience perhaps this could be a contrast between both of those personalities

Use more straight lines to control the drawing. They're easier to track and more definitive. For an exercise like this, you're focus probably shouldn't be to copy every mark. Rather it's to take note of the placement of a good portion of the major marks. It'll save you a good chunk of time I reckon.

1. use bigger brush strokes, think brush economy (look up ahmed aldooris painting course)
2. limit your palette, dont worry about gradients for now
3. set a time limit of max 30 minutes
4. don't be a perfectionist, it's the number of paintings you do that makes you better
you could have done 6 paintings instead of just 1 within those 3 hours.

You're getting lost in details before you've made the biggest and simplest statement. Squint more too, it helps to reduce the complexity of shapes when painting. Move from the most general shapes down to specific ones. Notice in pic related I ignored all the windows.

>>7986525

i can see with this drawing that you actually did try to use forms on the arms and legs, so all thats left is your hole in knowledge about anatomy, i condemn you to learning where each muscle in the human body starts and ends, the structure of every joint, the shape of every bone and the range of motion for every joint (relaxed, active, forced), and dont forget to learn how proportions work (good luck because basically everyone is wrong about how they work). also refer to post >>7948996
Also gesture = every part of the body is assisting one action, if you make the limbs all position themselves for unknown reasons its gonna look wrong

thanks, yes i need to bone up(lol) on anatomy but i thought the gesture was good, i thought at least

outline of 3D objects is a line. your issue is you want to see more indication lines (or shading) to show depth.
that is not the same as not drawing forms. depth in a drawing is just an illusion and you're complaining that you haven't been fooled, dum dum

this shit is wrong. no one sleeps with glasses, they can easily break and cut up your face
also, the body pillow is missing seams, as it is now it looks like a sausage.
you also messed up her torso, it's too long
you need to draw more cubes before you attempt something like this ever again

Ok I am making a new thread

line, shape, perspective/form, value/color, and composition
some people also add anatomy (in the general sense of knowing about the subject you're drawing)

what the FUCK!
>>
>>7986715
Kind of a bullshit scale then, as /beg/ should not go for value, color, and composition studies. Shading, coloring, and composing require other fundamentals first, so they themselves are not fundamentals by any means. If we are creating retarded scales, then /int/ is where I expect to see efforts in learning color theory, rendering, and some compositions.

Perspective, line/shape accuracy, negative space, and form are true fundamentals.
>>
>>7986736
>as /beg/ should not go for value, color, and composition studies
why not
a beg can definitely make use of those early on (especially value and composition)
value does not mean rendering either, simply stating areas of light and shadow is enough to begin with
>Perspective, line/shape accuracy, negative space, and form are true fundamentals.
you might be proyecting your own preferences or priorities over something more general
>>
>>7986719
i can't
>>
>>7986746
>you might be proyecting your own preferences
Nope, that is precisely the fundamentals taught by any master.
>>
>>7986508
She's sexier that way. Sacrifices must be done to satisfy their masters, (us).
>>
>>7986757
which master
because bargue starts off copying shapes and adding value
and basic composition strategies can be covered in a couple of pages or simply by observing art
>>
>>7986515
I don't think the original artist is posting anymore. I know Peril came up with that Crabby design but "he" don't "do" the lolis
