im struggling A LOT with her design. tear this shit apart because I still don't know what's wrong with it. She's a 20 something year old college student and kills people for fun. Her main rule is that she has to kill people who won't be missed, like orphans or people who are hated, or people who have no friends

shes supposed to look off putting but sexy regardless. its an important aspect of her character as she uses her appearance as a means of ensnaring people as well as getting away with the stuff she does because she just looks like another unassuming foid. I'm open to her having more eurocentric features but can't compromise on her actual complexion

Since there’s plenty of different subjects and styles out there I think it mostly boils down to:
>poor understanding of form/construction/perspective
>bad composition/aPpEaL
>symbol drawing

There’s a very clear point where you realize you’re /int/, when you have a grasp of fundamentals and can execute a drawing that isn’t full of glaringly obvious errors

your composition reminds me of those 80s dark fantasy paperback cover. If you want, you can search it up on pinterest to find similar aesthetic and try to shape your work with those references... if you want.

>>

Thank you

Haven't done a profile in a while, and it got a lil bit outa hand, and i havent been able to put my pen down

My inspirations are really that obvious XD
I will look at pinterest some more. Maybe i'll get an idea.

I wanted to give the elf intensely
bronze /golden almost glowingskin which caused some issues which i couldnt fully resolve,
at least not yet.

I tryed it because it looked at a copious amount of darksun artwork.

I tryed to combine a very barren enviroment where nothing grows..rocks. with a glowing hero (standing on barren rocks), and in the background (the shrubbery down below), a relatively calm place where life and enviroment is normal. Unremarkable to an extent

I tought of it this way. Dont know if i succeded.

Think of it like finishing a perileous journey, the ceremonyes , possibly even funerals, and now you just have to trek your way back home to your normal life.

I spent a few mins on this, i’d try to articulate some advice but im practically illiterate, basically try to think of things as shapes with their own unique value range
>>
>>7985800
Have the values make interesting shapes.
Achieve that by moving the lightsource (and sticking to the direction.).

Also cast a shadow on the subject so they blend more into the enviroment

Use darker reflections on the sword

Darkening some parts of her outfit.

Add a proper ... what is it called when (due to distance) the atmosphere becomes more opaque....ake tingz become similar shades of bluish grey..

Am i in the ballpark?
>>
>>7985694
instead of moving to a completely different picture like the other guys are suggesting, i think your next steps should be make the hills and everything much whiter because the light is strong, bring down the value of the blue parts of the robe and up the saturation of the greens, bring down the value of the rocks on the right while keeping or raising the saturation, the rocks at her feet are complicated diy, the sword's top side of the blade should be reflecting so much light here but its not (and i really think you should be rotating it so that its dark, compositionally speaking), take the warms out of the thighs and carve out highlight shapes on the hair, face and metals, you also want to change the color of the shoes or the rocks i feel like, maybe you could have her standing on grass...
>>
>>7985757
I agree they aren't int, but if every mid to high beg leaves there are going to be like 5 people in this thread

3 days later but here's my humble attempt.
Depending on your preferred aestethic, my version could be totally unlike what you're aiming for, but I'd say if she is supposed to be sexy but creepy, giving her a long face with nerdy glasses is not the best choice, she definitely looks offputting but more in a 5/10 looking, biology lab worker way (her white buttoned shirt looks like a lab coat to me).
I would say make her more stereotypically attractive with ref for facial proportions and balance, and for the creepyness part focus on the eyes. It's fairly well known that "psycho eyes" can make a beautiful person look menacing. "Eyes that want power over you" and all that. For example I think making her iris a fully dark/black color while keeping the whites underneath visible will definitely achieve that look in a subtler but well defined way. That's my theory at least...

>>7987599
Funny you say that because I always felt that my rendering is the weakest element in my art. I think I "cheated" well there because the colors and lighting and brushwork turned out decent. On the other hand everyone always praised my anatomy for being very detailed and accurate specifically when it comes to muscles (though I always feel my faces are scuffed). I agree the perspective is flat and sort of unclear here.
What is it about the anatomy you don't like?

Hey anons, looking for some more indepth help.

I've been struggling the past year to get out of /beg/hood.

This is my most recent attempt at a head. I feel like I conceptually get the basics of the fundamentals. Light, construction, form, etc. But I get lost in the fine details.

Any crit, especially on light / highlight / rendering would be greatly apprecaited. I've been really struggling to apply light to the planes of the face. I KNOW what the planes of the face are, when I look at a skull, or read a book I can conceptually get them, but shit the bed the moment it comes to lighting them.

Any lighting crit, or other things you see that I don't would be greatly appreciated.
>>
>>7994289
Use references and sketch a lot. Try watching something black and white like the twilight zone. Pause and draw. Really focus on shadows and where the light is coming from. Use a bold dark for shadows. Just 2 tones - no white highlights. "Feeling the form" will come naturally. You can also use a mirror and your phone flashlight. Look how shadows work when you move the light around your face

its a bad reference to begin with, light and size wise. dont ever jump the gun in the sketch phase. get the basic shapes down and then chip away to get it correct before you render. like a skulpture. you place and angle things wrong once and its a cascade effect that'll trickle down to all of it. not the other anon but you shouldnt take it personally and demand pyw if you yourself know you messed up. do it better next time. here's an old one to satisfy your desire though

I've been painting random shit spontaneously way more often after getting acrylic markers, and I'm starting to enjoy working with color after hating it for as long as I remember.
I like how there is no need to prepare brushes or anything, just taking out a marker is really convenient.

I think for me at least the advanced element comes from how well you stylize. I really fuck with the clothes, colors, and the overall atmosphere of the drawing. I think the beg elements come from small things like anatomy issues, some perspective issues (chair is very flat), and a little bit of ambiguity regarding what’s actually happening in the photo. Other than though it’s solid
>>
>>7995105
Wolf anatomy is a tad bit funny looking- sketch out some wolf skeletons and skulls before drawing animals next time, it’s very effective for getting those placement of features correct. Try to draw the arrows in perspective- not a technical issue but would make the piece more interesting. I think her hair should be longer and that more should also be flowing towards the back

I'm lazy and impatient, most of my stuff is quick unfinished sketches like this. I'm usually better with perspective but this was an exercise where you scribble random shapes and then try to make a drawing out of it, I'm not fully sure what's happening it in either.
>>7998588
>Wolf anatomy is a tad bit funny looking-
I really can't draw animals, need to sit down and grind them properly... This was supposed to be more of a demon-looking creature with mix of different animal features but that makes it even more impossible for me to draw.

The contour of the outside of her face is way too sharp and angular, the eyes too low and far apart, the definition on her nasolabial folds are way too intense, the nose is too simplistic with the features that would define it as appealing but still dainty ignored for base planes. Proportions in general are off, cranium too large, features too low, jaw too small. Compare to a hampton or loomis head. You've draw the head at at 3/4 view but the features are placed in a flat configuration. Hair rendering is decent but that seems to be an accident of over working, when the hair results in ends, the direction of the flow is improvised and stilted. You're not following the lessons of drapery and envisioning the hair as a mass of planes.. in your mind the rendering is the form hence drawing the individual strands. General lack of understanding of form and anatomy, knowledge of simplistic landmarks such as the adams apple showing a lack of simple anatomy. Loomis and hampton again.

Personal critique, subject seems to be some anime thot. Get better reference and taste.
>>
>>8001046
I appreciate the in depth critique anon, I agree with everything. This was just some girl I saw in à Cane’s, it’s a life drawing. 3/4 faces are a big weakness so I’ll work on them more. I’d say drawing faces in profile is my biggest strength in terms of head drawings
>>
>>8001055
I wa pretty drunk when I typed that, also canes is really tasty

Profile is probably only easy because it's likely a flat drawing for you, make sure that you're indicating depth even in profile, make note of plane changes whenever you can, barrel of mouth, angles changes wrapping from the brow to side of head, difference in hardness of edges edges between the nose bridge and main mass of nose, etc.
>>
>>8001323
lol it indeed yes

The flatness does make it easier to draw but at the same time more difficult to communicate because you have a lot less moving room when drawing à face in profile compared to 3/4th given that you’re dealing with a lot of similar shapes and details. I appreciate the advice all around though, doing some Hampton and Loomis as a warmup because of what you said

I did this Mike mignola master study. I love the original. I think I made a pretty good reproduction of it. The problem is I don’t feel like I grasped his process at all, I’m very good at free handing finished lines and used very very basic construction but I want to steal this style and use it to make my own original scenes. Anyone have insight on how mignola constructs his drawings? I know he starts with a composition sketch but as for the actual figures does he fully sketch them out in perspective and then choose what to black out? Idk.
>>
>>8002571
I like this a lot. I like the guy in the suit on the left middle. Do more of that where you can properly see his suit features. Rather than the guy in front left, where the features get pretty lost in the dark. Also the shadows are opposing sides. Maybe intentional but it makes it look a little strange, readability wise. Idk anything about mignola

I'm stuck at work all day in my own office, but I have no tablet here and I want to draw... so I thought I'd see if I could come up with a mouse based rendering technique by just using really low flow brushes. This was the result.

It took about 2 hours, but to me proves that you can actually render pretty decent results with just a mouse.

Used photoshop and hard round brush at 5% flow. Now making decent line art with any sort of gesture with a mouse is another problem entirely...

>>
>>8003540
after laying initial wash I use small brushstrokes, like in gouache, any time I see change in color or value on object I'm painting. So my process is like assembling a mosaic and closer to pointillism. And I try to put them across the surface - it's easy with onion since they have visible streaks. Also another advantage of working this way is that you can easily dab brushstroke away with paper towel if you mixed value or color wrong.

I think this is good. Your biggest problem right now is communicating femininity- neck is too thick, face is too sharp, too many triangular shapes in general, broad shoulders, and the hair needs more work. When drawing women, curves are your best friend. Very rarely will you see sharp shapes on a woman

Those pastels/charcoal look quite realistic, are they stock Krita tools?

Now, as a critique, I recommend covering the "charcoal" with a light application of color no matter if it's in the darkest shaded areas, in the case of Misa's legs it looks as she's wearing stockings (good) but her chest looks a bit like it belongs on a different piece because you just left black and grey suddenly turn to colored skin. I don't have my work with me rn but I did the top middle piece in the OP with charcoal and pastels

Thank you and that one anon for letting me know the impasto brushes existed, I didn't know krita was chill like that
