Throwing myself out of my comfort zone and experimenting with dramatic lighting/mood? Need help with ambient and cast shadows as well as highlights, I hate how flat this looks. Redlining is very much appreciated !

Youre treating the light source like its a static orb superimposed on to the image instead of a physical object inside the image. Think about where it is in relation to the other objects, and the character.

I think I sort of understand what you mean, but could you maybe give an example? I'm not too great with lighting yet
>>

it doesnt even look flat, thats why this kind of lighting is used all the time in manwha and it looks great.

honestly just keep improving your drawing skills, at some point you will actually start to see the need for busier lighting details

Thank you anon, this really means a lot for my self confidence

Your art is very lovely and has kind of a unique soft feel to it. What I recommend is using the light to define shapes like the planes of the face and body. Also the face looks large and not very structured so work on that as well

ah thank you, I hadn't noticed how large the face looks until now ;; I really appreciate it :)

apologies for bothering you again but would you be able to tell me how you were able to find such appealing colours for the highlights/areas where the light shines the most? I understand that its a good idea to use a multiply layer for finding shadow colours. Also what kind of effect did you use for the bright center light of the lantern, and did you drag it out in a larger circle like I did in the original? I hope this makes sense

im using csp
all the lighting except the one in the hair was done with glow dodge, the blue one was mostly for the blue areas the rest was done with the yellowish tone and for that area you mentioned i mostly just pressed harder for a brighter effect and some blur to soften the edges.

the glow doge effect has this hue kind of effect when the pressure is on, if you just use a solid brush you get this bright shit. the reason behind for me it's because it mimics this thing at the bottom, i don't remember what is this called but basically you don't want to use just one tone to shade/light, isntead theres like a hue range that's better or preferred.

However i would say that shading is just as impotant to make the lighting look better, if you use the same tone of brightness/shading for everything it will look god awful, unless you are cell shading but even that has it's nuances too.
