Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something). Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Ongoing Contest:KODANSHA MANGA ACADEMY AWARDmanga-academy.kodansha.com/award/mangaka-discovery/>Deadline is July 22>You keep all rights to manga and only caveat is IF you get stuff like the Grand Prize you Kodansha has first on publishing deal(and they get final say on no if no deal ends up getting made) so not too much downsidesAlso if you happen to be in LA for Anime Expo this year Kadokawa is doing portfolio/comic reviews:kadokawaworldmanga.com/onsite/Also they are doing online portfolio reviewskadokawaworldmanga.com/online/However Im less sure about that one cause theres no deadlines and it doesnt say shit about what they do with the content that you give them. Terms state that its just a chance for editors to look at people's work so its not like a contest where you may give up rights but it just seems weird what they may do(like especially if they just leave you silent) but I dont think they are shady enough to just fucking do blatant copyright theft so its probably worth checking out

Idk what to do.
the long awaited pig-anon comic, submitted without screentones because I couldn't figure out how to make them look good in a binary format, some pages are good, some are scuffed, some are really scuffedhttps://gofile.io/d/C2z4DO
>>7997186Actually awesome little comic dude, really good job. Do you think you'll post it around/ maybe try and get published in a comic/ manga? I know a fair few that do short stories (all australian though but thered be tons of americans)Also kino at the end with Gwynevere. Fuck I love giantess women. I'm pretty excited about when I'll get to finally start drawing my big girl (she appears like 200 pages in)
>>7997186Nice work pig anon. As one of the (apparently) few anons that even bothers to read anybody else's works here..... my thoughts as I went through:Pg 12 - motion blur effect is cool, but there's almost too much motion blur here. I feel it would be helped if you did something to highlight the area around the pig so that the audience can immediately tell where he is. Either adding even MORE motion blur on the pig or by erasing some. Right now, everything kind of blends together.Pg 15/16 - this was a super rough transition. I had to reread it twice or three times to realize we were suddenly dealing with a cut to the past. Outside of inking for your competition, is there no way to add in some transition pages to show the audience that we are moving to the past?Pg 30/31 - nice money shotPg 36/37 - personally, I dont get you feet guys, but whatever. From a comic perspective, it was funny that this was all he wanted, but I feel like audience members would be wondering why the fairy sticks around the pig if he just undertakes dangerous delves (and out her in danger too)..... only for huge feet rubs Regardless, this was a lot of work dude, good job.
>>7997203>feetThere are so many better parts of the body
Does the strategy of becoming a popular twitter/online artist before releasing any sort of comic project to the public to get extra eyes ever works out?For example, not many people actually read Ramia-Yana despite the amount of followers TGS has, even Dog Ningen is properly more read at this point. Pic related has like a few thousand views for the whole thing as well despite the artist being well known online and a decade+ of posting art regularly.
>>7997210Fuck no it doesn't. Not sure why you even asked when you answered your own question anyway.
>>7997210I can't prove it perfectly, but there seems to be a sense of "ugh....." among the followerbase almost when a popular creator starts doing a project like that. A popular artist is known for doing fanart or regular puctures of X, people come to him/her for making X. No obstacle in the way of X, nothing stops more X from being made. Then the artist starts making a side project. People get frowny faces because now they start wondering to what degree there will be less dripfeed of X getting made because now the artist has to devote time to making the project, time that used to go to making X.The artist could even say "oh but this project will INCLUDE or BE ABOUT X" and it won't matter, because if it's something like a comic, you will have to have an introduction, some level of plot development, etc. All stuff that isn't more X. And heaven help if the artist creates OCs, because now on top of all the changes the consumer base is already unhappy about, they now have to start caring about these OCs. It's a bit of a bitter pill. Unless it's straight up just porn comics of existing IPs, it's an extremely uphill battle and even then the porn comic might go nowhere as well.
>>7997197thank you so much!>Do you think you'll post it around/ maybe try and get published in a comic/ manga?I've submitted it to the kodansha contest even if there's no shot in hell for me to win anything>>7997203> this was a super rough transition. I had to reread it twice or three times to realize we were suddenly dealing with a cut to the past.I see, I tried doing the thing where you make the pages black to show a fleshback and add a screentone gradient to indicate the transition since it's a left page but I guess it wasn't clear, I don't even know what I'd do to fix it to be honest I'd have to think about it, maybe I'll add something for the rerelease.>personally, I dont get you feet guysI don't either, I'm more of a armit guy you know? in the original script the pig and the fairy when they are offered anything they desire they decide to ignore the giant lady and kick her out so that they can live in a larger pot, that's the reason in the flashback it's shown that they live in a pot like diogenes. but I didn't really like it so I went with a "oolong asking shenron for used panties" finale>but I feel like audience members would be wondering why the fairy sticks around the pig if he just undertakes dangerous delves (and out her in danger too)very fair criticism, I like to draw about fools, characters that would do idiotic things just for the adventure and where they are presented with a wish they waste it on something dumb, I thought about having the giant lady ask Selka for a wish too but I couldn't come up with anything funny, now that I think about it I could've have the fairy ask for the giant lady to be free and get everyone teleported to a beach so they can have a nice day like she talks about in the flashback or something like that, stuff I'll add when I submit it somewhere else.
>>7997186New here, do you draw trad or digitally? If the latter, what brushes? What program? Thanks in advance.

I liked the interactions between the girls and how you at the same time managed to build up more tension. Looking forward to see how things unfold in the next chapters
>>7997153is viz good?? Seems like the best western option to get your stuff pushed onto readers. I see some stuff there that is as good as comics here.

>>7997692That's a very hard question to answer because I don't think I can speak objectively on itI'm proud that I've actually managed to finish a project and I think narratively there's not much I need to fix, but there definitely could be improvements on the art front
>>7997532yeah we just had a good arc, also theres good news about those 2 lesbians

>>7997891>I took another break to draw cute girls.Oh yeah? Prove it.
>>7997974This is Sunburn anon btw. The space catgirl guy.
>>7997587thank you, I think we're done with the pigman's world, next comic will be a radically different genre, might be mecha
>>7998006better still have giantesses dude. Have the main character fight another giant mecha, he thinks he won cause destroyed the mecha, only for it to be revealed its actually just a suit, and a hot busty woman bursts out (so yes macross)
>>7997149With LLMs that can read my manga relatively intelligently, now I can get my heart broken by rejections much faster than before!
>>7998026I promise you I'll include some totaly spies fetishes like bitches being wrapped like mummies or bitches with crystals in their knees>>7998139hey, I'll take it.
>>7998139you don't even need that, just pick a random page from your comic and put it next to a random page from a winner and compare
>>7997837The main character is tracking a fairly unknown monster he believes to be an existential threat and now has had his fears pretty much confirmed, but it's so much worse than he even thinks. He says he's pursuing it for a noble cause and everyone is currently none the wiser (and there's a good chance he's convinced himself of that too) but there's no way for him to actually explain what he truly believes without sounding like a total nutjob. He's hard bottling up his fears related to the monster and is on the first step of a swift downward spiral.
>>7997837What should have been a fun dinner party with a show is ruined by a guy who doesn't take no for an answer and people who didn't like the past memories the show brought up.
>>7998174I am realizing more and more than raw talent, art skills and creativity is only part of the puzzle. I like what I draw and I enjoy it, but none of my comics are really refined or polished. Looking at manga contest winners I see a lot of stuff that looks boring to me, but the structure and pacing is seamless. If I draw something boring thats badly paced, it was just as fun to draw as something that's well paced, so my body doesnt know the difference. There has to be an outside person to see it objectively and ask the question of if its good enough. Editors really are magical. An editor can turn a good idea into something sellable.
>>7998306The story as I understand it lacks a serious element of anticipation which causes things such as the flashback scene to fall flat and feel too late. This is what happens when there's not enough moments dedicated to build up, which most of a story should be and the climax coming next to the final scene.I'd hate to say it doesn't work, the pieces are there and it's a good plot, it just needed to have the main beats reprioritized. Fights are like a cool explosion, the initial boom is shocking, but proper set up will leave an impact long after it's over.
here's my new manga protagonist. Its AMERICA JOE. hes a baka gaijin.
>>7998539this will go hard in black and white
>>7998000have you tried drawing with a tablet instead of a mouse?
>>7998626Not him but good work can be done with a mouse. I don't think it needs to be a sticking point.
>>7998172oh you submitted to the kodansha contest too? how many submissions do we got in this general?what's your manga if you feel like sharing?>>7998174yeah what the other anon said
>>7998651>the madlad is back at it againGOOOOOOOOO
>>7998657>what's your manga if you feel like sharing?Already shared >>7997186
Is it possible to make a proper comic with pencil? Or is it too soft in therm of contrast?
>>7998709yeah you can do it. just scan it and set the contrast to your liking. I do it sometimes.
>>7998727You mean, like pic related? If you make the pencil black it does barely look like pencil anymore.
>>7998736oh . yeah that's it. I coudnt tell. looks like ink.
>>7998626I AM USING A TABLET. FOR MONTHS NOW!!!>>7998631Also, this.
How do you come up with good dialogue whe you don't really have anything in mind to have your characters say? My last 5 pages had no words spoken by thr characters which was intentional. But now I need someone to say something or the silence will go for too long. But every dialogue idea I come up with just feels forced and unnatural. I never had this issue before.
>>7998172to be fair the kodansa contest didnt say they were looking for technical polish or art skills, but story flow and potential.
>>7998768If they're not talking to each other for 5 pages, they better be busy doing something else. You can have one character talking to themselves, or thinking to themselves. Dialogue begins when one character wants something, so figure that out first.
>>7998683will read soon, are you looking to hear feedback? i ask because after i submit something and the deadline is passed i'd rather just hear compliments, i can't change it anyway
My dream is to one day participate in this thread with all of you. I will keep my fundamental studies until I can start working on my comics and sharing progress with the /mmg/ anons.
>>7998768You need to make your characters feel alive in your mind.Imagine your story and in the middle of your dialogueless characters, in swoops Naruto, or whatever popular character you're likely familiar with. THAT character will feel alive to you, you hardly need to think of what they'll say or do in the situation, they just act on their own.Make your characters like that. I recommend having a bottled scene in mind, that puts you as the writer in the right head space to envision what they're like. A scene that really shows their personality in a stereotypical way, or elevator pitch way. For most characters this is their first introduction scene, like Naruto painting over the faces on the cliff and then bragging about it.(atleast that's how his character was in the early part of the series, he becomes a bit boring later on) When you can practically hear their voices and their attitude, see their facial expressions and body posture in your mind, then it becomes easy to write them in any scene.
>>7998830Like I said, I usually don't have this problem. Most of the dialogue I already have was really easy for me to imagine. I wonder if this is a sign that the scene shouldn't even be made.
>>7998746Yeah, my question is, would it work, if it would look more like pencil?
>>7998849In the case of difficult scenes, rather than staring at a blank page, you should find a way to cut out the impossible options, leaving on the possible ones left. That could help narrow it down.Physically write down what they WOULDN'T do in the situation, and then proceed to act out some ideas of what they might do, and see if anything sticks. Really tackle it aggressively.
>>7997186About time anon
>>7998787>technical polish or art skills>but story flow and potential.don't know if I have either of those>>7998795>are you looking to hear feedback?I'd like to hear what you liked and what you didn't
>>7997837gonna finally draw the main villain crew of my story next page finally. (its a double page spread)Did this today though, but I'll go over it again tomorrow, as I phoned in the background and some of the expressions look odd
>>7997790I really just went almost a whole year thinking they were dead while chapters built up and they're just fine in the next chapter
>>7997837the protagonists mom gave her an ass whooping
>>7998890I really like your comics, phoning in the backgrounds and then coming back later with more energy seems like the best way to do it if you're by yourself. because assistants would do it for pros, you're kind of leaving it to future you who is your only assistant.
>>7997938Stopped after 14 pagesHorrendous art, bad pacing, bad dialogue, unfunny jokes, overall not worth reading
>>7998952All the characters look like Devil Doll but less interesting
>>7997938The wording of the intro on the prologue was interesting. Got me excited a little. Then it all went downhill. Too many slangs. And the artstyle is not charming or appealing enough to make me ignore it's begness. I found it funny how you dre the guys putting barely any effort in it then the goth girl shows up and it's like your skill had leveled up out if nowhere. She's cute at least, and her poses are nice. Dialogue seemed to improve a little with her presence. I'll try reading further. No promises though.
>>7999019Okay I read the rest. The goth girl is the only one who says interesting things in an interesting way. If you could make the rest of the dialogue similar to it (less slangs and take it a little more seriously) it would be an improvement I think. But that's up to you.
>>7997938since you probably know the art is /beg/ level, I'll comment on other things, first of all its not hopeless. I can tell you're drawing what you think is cool and you're putting as much personality as you can in these characters, that's way better than an epic story that's tightly written but has no characters or stakes. Art skills are learnable and so is comic paneling. If the characters are gonna talk so casually then space out the speech bubbles so the sentences are seperated. If the bubble has more than one sentence in it, then its too big. and make the lines punch more instead of sprinkling in niggas. Characters also interrupt each other all the time which is interesting but you need the word bubble order to be correct for this effect to work. The pacing is too fast in many places, and if you want a fast paced comic then that's fine, but you need breaks without movement sometimes. I suggest you stop shading the comic so you have more time to draft and reread your thumbnails slowly. The comic is left to right but many times its confusing or out of order:Page 3 the phone makes the call, then the next panel is supposed to be the guy on the right? and then back to the left where I assume he's replying to the main character with "ask obas" but that box is also on the left so its read first. These things are extremely important to get right since you don't get any chances from the reader with art on this level. Page 4 seems like a mistake, the order is completely wrong. He says "aye bitch lemme", and THEN the other guys phone is ringing, AND THEN he picks it up? It should be "ring ring", "what?", "aye bitch lemme". Unless the main character is talking to himself before the call is answered?Them having powers and dueling is cool, and the fight scene was actually coherent which surprised me. The glasses guy effortlessly blowing away the other dude while asking where the main character is, was cool.
>>7999052Chapter 2 is already way better in pacing and writing and art. I'm more hooked now so I'll update my thoughts when I finish it
>>7999059man what the hell, delete chapter 1 or change it because this is way better as an /x/ schizo magic comic with bits of humor here and there.
>>7998768Tbh I've been feeling a little burned out with my own story. I have barely started it but I've replayed the same scenes so many times in my head that I think it killed my motivation. And the pages I've already made started to feel bland. Maybe I should take a real break and forget about it for a while.
>>7999097You have to be motivated by the immense difference between the story being just in your head vs having it actually made and published. You're excited by it in your head, but you've gone through it so many times that you're bored of it. But you haven't even made it yet! Recall that the story once excited you, and let it excite you again when it becomes real. And finally.... this is the hard part, the actually doing it part. You've gotta put in the hours. Watch some of Urasawa's Manben series and watch those artists working 10 hours a day, putting the hours in to the grind everyday over many years.
>>7999146The issue isn't making it. The problem is that this desensitization makes it harder to tell if what I'm making is good or not.
>>7999148nta but I get it
>>7999148If you feel doubtful it's probably shit
>>7999148thats what editors are for. I think you just have to do it anyways, its not like you die if you make something shit. Its better to make it and it sucks than not make anything at all paralyzed by fear. That's a reddit platitude but its true, just look at all the nodraws on /ic/ and other sites STILL waiting while the world around us gets worse and worse.

>>7999266>That second panelWatch out, anon!
>>7999266Hey manYour steering wheel is on the wrong side
>>7998952Chapter 1 is definitely the weakest of all the chapters. I wrote it about a year ago and it's the first thing I really attempted. What it initially started as vs what its become are 2 completely different animals. I appreciate you taking the time out nonetheless.>>7999019The dialogue is reflective of how me and my friends talk to each other but I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea. The first chapter was really me learning how to write and use Procreate properly but I'm beginning to become a lot more sure of the story and the art as time goes on. >>7999052I agree that chapter 1 needs a rewrite at some point. I hadn't yet gotten into the stride of writing when doing it plus the concept has kind of evolved since then. This is really my first attempt at writing a fully fledged story and I still have A LOT to learn along the way

Some more progress. When all the pages are done and I eventually get a proper scan of them I'm thinking of doing some smaller touch ups digitally while also doing screen tones. There's a tiny voice telling me to not do touch ups after scanning and that I have to keep things as is, but that's kinda stupid. I'm already doing tones digitally, so what does it matter, really. I'm assuming it's a very normal practice to do so
heres my OC america joe THE BAKA GAIJIN AGAIN . I added a CIGAR. AND SOME MORE WITTY DIALOGUE.
>>7999711OH. I MEAN HERE HE IS... BANZAI

>>7999711>>7999712Great chapterMy favorite part was when America Joe turned to Shy Nerdy Childhood Friend with Big Boobs and she told him they were overrriding the mainframe and he said "In english, four eyes!" and then they kissed.

Blame is such an inspiration. How can it be so good with so little? Often there is nothing fancy, just basic blobs, blocks, black/white playful lines and shadows, and very basic grey screentones. Yet, it is so impactful and good.
>>7999695I think not only is post editing good just for the sake of the finished look but also it can make you a little more relaxed about screwing up a line here and there. I can see the remainders of your pencils on the bottom of the first page.
So, the first chapter isn't finished yet. I still have about 10 more pages to go. Some pages need polishing, others need to be redone, and there are a some grammar mistakes I need to fix. Anyway, I'd like to ask for your opinion on what I got so far. As readers, do you think the pacing feels good, or does it feel too rushed?https://blueparrotbeak.thecomicseries.com/comics/115/#content-start
>>7999766Does this count as fanart?>>7999960The pacing overall makes sense, if slightly rushed, especially the back and forth scene with the devil. That said, I understood what was going on perfectly, zero confusion whatsoever. The possessed black guy's speech bubbles could be a bit more readable. I know you probably wanted to have his words be all crazy to also emphasize that HE is crazy, but it was a bit hard to read. Either way, keep it up.
For years now I've been developing an idea for a comic. I've worked out characters, character designs, setting, chapter/scene ideas, etc. But I can't seem to get started on actually putting it all together. It all seems overwhelming and I guess I don't know where to start...how can I make the process of creating my first page easier? I'm hoping that once I finally get over that hurdle, it'll make everything less daunting.
>>8000068You just do the thing. Draw the first scene in the top left corner of the paper, then put a rectangle around it.
>>8000068>how can I make the process of creating my first page easier? You can't. You gotta just knuckle down and do it.
>>8000071>>8000082Makes sense...alright, another question: how do I into backgrounds? I don't want to completely half ass them as the setting is fairly important.
>>8000112Make concept arts. Spend as much time as you need in them. I made the mistake of starting my story without doing that and ended up with extremely half-assed backgrounds that I won't be bothered to redraw.
>>7997930
>>8000112You just gotta sink the time into them. Use refs if you can.
>>8000112Literally like anything else. You start practicing drawing them. Pick a picture and try to draw it. Several /mmg/ anons clearly like to do architecture if you read their works and their backgrounds ain't too shabby.
