Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Quick sketch before bed. Really misjudged the sizing and proportions here. Any tips on drawing both eyes properly? I always mess up the second eye I draw. I know I'm suppose to imagine the eye as a 3d form but I can tell I fucked it up with the right eye and also didn't place it along the curve of the head accurately.
>>
Everyone here seems to be learning to draw anime girls but this is Anime Study General, are there any resources for learning how to draw backgrounds and other objects? I want to move beyond 1girl white void.

Is it considered cheating to zoom in on tablet to do details and get lines as neat as possible?
>>
>>8001128
no but if you're a beginner the details don't matter so it's a waste of time

search background_design or just search an anime you like
>>
>>8001128
Nah. It's one of those things where people will claim it makes you develop bad habits, but it's definitely not "cheating"
>>
>>8001128
it's would say it's pretty much necessary for precise anime inking.
for roughing it can be harmful because you lose track of the bigger picture more easily, it becomes harder to balance the gesture of one part with everything else.
but in either case having the image up on a second monitor or unzooming frequently to check your work is good.

This might not be relevant because it's not a "study"; it's just me drawing fan art. But I often struggle to draw fan art.
I can draw my own characters and stuff easy, because I know what they look like and I can bend them to match my intention. But with defined characters that aren't my own I struggle so much.
Like here when I drew Prince Adam I couldn't figure out how to draw his face and make it look like him. I tried a more defined nose, defined cheek bones and bigger lips but it just looked bad so I went with basically a "generic" face with no real detail.
Does anyone else struggle with that?

overly simplified linework and shapes compared to what you wound find in anime are the biggest giveaway for gaijinime. download any anime settei and zoom in to see how they do the actual linework on it and compare side-by-side to any example of gaijinime drawing the same body part and you will see the difference in which one is fundamentally more refined and complex. even more skilled gaijin tend to just ignore a lot of linework complexity that anime obsesses over so it always looks gaijiny. there is nothing you can do to catch up to this difference in quality without consciously trying to make it more japanese (which is why the more based people shill saito naoki's method here).
if you actually try this I can discuss further with you.

>If he spoke exclusively in nihongo
if you can't tell it's gaijin-ime just from the thumbnail and you haven't just discovered anime this year with frieren or csm kek you need to reconsider what you've been doing so far in terms of studying japanese artists. not saying this an insult but a wakeup call if you care at all about anime.

unironically it all comes down to perceptual or cognitive resolution.
memorize this quote as a guiding light.

with gaijin there is a hard limit they just won't go beyond in terms of examining their shape and linework. at some point it becomes good enough for them and they can't make further distinctions, while Japan obsesses *literally* over every single sub-part of a line and how that actually looks on the screen. the westerner is usually satisfied with roughly following "anatomy" and having "correct forms" but anime goes further because it is high resolution art.

Jumping in to share my thoughts. You're annoying. And I could care less about FateShit/Go! You larping his name or if you're actually Dan is annoying too. Using Twitter likes to brag is also dumb.
Likes do help but I've already run out of patience with likes and have moved onto the next best thing. Good day sir!
>>
I came back to further elaborate why I don't like FateShit/Go. Not to attack the artist but just look at this weird ass comment. They do get likes and therefore anything fate will get likes. There's a bot on Twitter that promotes fate posts with a large following. I tried to abuse it before but couldn't get it's attention like I could with the NeoPets bot. Other than that, FateShit is associated with a traumatic event in my life when I lost my dog to a car accident. Somehow Final Fantasy Dissidia on the PSP help me get the stress off. Keep that in perspective in mind. That's how old fate is, it's from a movie "Kara no kyokai" I only watched it because DemolisiousDPlus recommended it. That was from a long ass time ago. Also fate has this weird fetish with masters and servents. That just fosters abusive relationship and I don't like it. I believe in sexual equality, no pegging please. I've also had a traumatic incident with my ass too when I ate too many of those gummies.

Technically speaking everything is ogre.... but some ''quick fixes'' would be...

Her neck cannot bend like that while her spine is straight/flat on the grtound , so her ribcage should bend a bit, consequently part of her chest would be more vissible....however.... this would make her tummy flex inwards a bit.... so that should change too...
And the pelvis perspective is different from the torso perspective... not by much tho.

you need to take into account the curves of the body in all angles, in my redline(black) the torso looks like its not flat on the ground but it is, it's just the countour of the waist that makes it look that way.

To use a food analogy, a big mac with some fries once in a while won't hurt a healthy person, but it might become a morbidly obese person's last meal.
If it's not clear, the healthy person is Japan where drawing anime is commonplace, the morbidly obese person is the US where this skill is an almost unheard of miracle.

Anyone else here with a hobby of researching the long term effects of constrooction on the human mind?
Everyone knows about the average controoctoid on /ic/ already, but lately I've been fascinated with this subject who has over 10k hours of drawing experience, but whose mind has been heavily modified by constroocting over an extended period of time so as to display an undeniable faux anime corruption to his creations even after all these hours and even after being tutored directly by an illustrator from Japan. I don't think it is a case of pic related with him and otherwise he has all the qualities needed to be fully Japanese tier. He might be the most valuable sample so far in my investigations.

I've noticed that you basically have to go full joker in the west if you want to have any chance of doing legitimate anime. The social pressure not to draw anime is just too high.
The goyish/herd mentality people seem to be at a very high disadvantage in such a culture even though it can be a benefit in Japan. Really fascinating stuff.
You basically have to be okay with rejecting everything people around you believe to be the norm and only way.
>>
>>8010893
We need to check if the gains were made in the direction towards anime or towards just contructing cooler while still being westernized.

I actually hate over the top character designs and I like the character designs of stuff like JJK, AOT, and CSM over something like My Hero Academia ,Gachiakuta or most JRPGs. Don't get me wrong, the character designs in both are great for the shows they're in. Superheroes and fantasy characters need to stand out after all.
But if Eren Jeager had super spikey hair or the scouts wore outlandish gear, aot probably wouldn't have worked as well as it did.

It's the fact that they are grounded and "basic" character designs that they paint a picture of pseudo-realism. Well, as real as you can get when they are flying around fighting naked giants.
>>
>>8011102
>JJK, and CSM over something like My Hero Academia ,Gachiakuta or most JRPGs
>AOT
One of them is not like the others. Also it doesn't make sense to hate anything in terms of design if it's high quality. It's all contextual and storytelling driven if it's a good work, pseudo-realism isn't some default ideal state that makes your work better.

Don't wing it. Copy every line consciously to create the same shapes and see how it affects every other line/shape near it. Constrooction just makes you focus on abstractions, not the actual linework that gives it that look. Also copy newer stuff, it's more refined in its drawing technique.

can always posterize to get a better sense for the shapes but if you've looked on their twitter they have a process video and they start from neutral shadow, block in the shapes of sunlight and then add occluded spots. finally they have warmth bouncing from the ground. these kinda artists focus more on designing the shapes than what is realistic even more than some others i feel

based Ritsu drawer.

>something feels wrong fundamentally
main reason is the eye/face shape being too simple, anime characters are never going to look fully themselves if you miss out on anime shape complexity.
check out the k-on settei for an example and compare the eye shapes.
like with your lateral eye, it's not just 3 straight lines for the entire inside part of the eyelid symbol, it's like 6-7 more subtle lines with very deliberate segmentation.

just do more copies of settei's, doesn't have to be k-on specifically, just what you want to draw like in general. but if you're going to draw k-on characters it won't hurt anyway to understand their OG style better.
>>
>>8023544
something with no lines to actually copy from is not going to help you get better at anime if you can't already draw anime.
i get that it's a good way to cope & confidence boost yourself because it's fundamentally easier than high level 2d art like anime, but you have to grow up already if you want to stop making faux anime.

nips can draw anime. that guy can't draw anime.

it's just avoiding the issue of actually learning anime, classic cope tactics. or just naivety/stupidity to 2d art, pick which one is worse yourself.
>>
>>8023566
>pros do make mistakes
Not on any level the people here can see. It's extremely funny to post pro drawings and receive worse looking corrections by people who can't tell that it looks worse, or that they're trying to correct a drawing way above their level.

U are just grasping a straws now, Plenty of high level manga artists have done the same stuff that the west teachs as part of their studies, and that's not to mention the ones that literally point to western books/methods as the source of how they learned to draw from 0, but keep being a contrarian it wont change anything.

The ass area is botched kek, her glute seems to be in different angles( see green lines) seems like a bad reference copy. The leg in the left shouldn't be fully visible from this angle not at degree at least, you need to know the glutes insertions in the leg, which is pretty easy to learn too. the back looks too plain, add the outline of the scapula, and maybe some shadows, the neck needs to follow her head... the head and neck are not connected in your pic.

Extra CRTABBING!!!!:
Perspective in the right eye is bad
Drappery in the jeans is off, it looks like its pretty tight but its also loose??
Top of her head it's kinda flat, maybe, idk.

TLDR:
ROOMIS, BOXES, FORMS etc..etc...also UGHHHHHHHHH and and copying is cringe and bluepilled!

Thanks, one issue I have w/ drawing characters like this though is that even within a series they're not always consistent (at least from what I can tell). As an ex, for these 2 eyes the far eyes seems to have a fairly different shape even w/ the same angle (see how for the left image the back eye seems to have a little "bump" near the far side but the right doesn't). Any tips for this?

I'm not really following. Here's my ref on left
>The leg in the left shouldn't be fully visible from this angle not at degree at least
Why? Your post redline also has her left leg visible, am I missing something?
I concede the neck part and the shadows didn't come through dark in the picture but what are the green lines really representing? Not following that part, especially w/ the post redline putting her jeans in the middle of her ass, shouldn't the closer hip's shorts arch upwards? (From my perspective seems like the overall shape of the jeans are right in mine? I assume something else is making it look wrong but always hard to tell w/ your own art)
Can someone else give some input on this redline?

>even within a series they're not always consistent
yeah especially for illustration/poster adjacent stuff the individual style of the artist is usually more explicit, while the show itself is in the style of the character designer Horiguchi Yukiko. in the actual episodes there are corrections by the episode / chief animation directors that tend to unify things more.
>Any tips for this?
just pick one artist's style to draw in is the best advice, but you can copy and learn from anything you want if it's a good drawing. the shape complexity you need to keep in mind and try to implement in your own drawings is going to be there in everything professional.

Okay i as i assumed it was just a badly refenced drawing.
I will try to keep it simple but also warn you that my english is horrible lol.

Okay my drawing was my interpretation of your drawing. i assumed you wanted to draw her like she was leaning her weight to left leg.
the way i drew the short was just me mostly fucking around too much with the tightness i didn't know you were following a ref. But you also drew the legs and ass so bad that it was hard to tell if she was leaning of her legs or stading still in that case her left leg should be partially visible but definetely not the front part.

Now here it comes the messy part, you need to now anatomy or overall just how to draw things realistically not necesarilly in style but absolutely understand it.Like i said the worst part it's the legs, your drawing botches their shape big time, the green line was to point out the differences in the glutes insertions to the femur. this was unter the perception that you were drawing her just standing there due to the top part of her jeans being in a flat horizant line.
In your ref her left leg is going backwards a bit which lifts the glute and you can see that visible inner wrinkle as a result, while the other leg that is going forward it's extending the glute making it look larger but technically it isn't. here's where your lineart fucks up the left glute you outline partly the glute shape in the left side plus the inner part which it makes the glute look ass implant. The shape in the right glute is not great either.

You really need to know anatomy if you are gonna use 3dpd as references cus a lot of shit doesn't translate well with anime stylization but also all anime drawings are based on relistic anatomy/stuff that's why strictly copying straght from anime will fuck you up aswell bc you have no idea what is being stylized and you will be second guessing and fucking up a lot when you are drawing with no refs.

There are too many problems in the drawing to discuss them comprehensively. However, there is a hierarchy to those problems, and at the top of it, the one most beginners have, and the one improvement that would change the impression of your drawing the most, is your sense of form and all the things that affects, such as proportion, orientation, and alignment.
A simple rearrangement of the features of the face can change the impression a lot, even without improving the quality of the draftsmanship. Form should be your priority.
