I love your art, but you're over complicating your painting.
It's literally just finding and making up simples shapes. You don't need to make a thousand different strokes to blend the skin, use a primary flat color, then block in basic flat shapes on top of the base color, make a new layer and use a soft brush to blend the softest areas of the body like the breasts.

ok I need some help.
I used Krita to make this and my brush work is kind of bad.

How do I make things not so muddy? All the brushes look like wet marker and I'm clearly not used to digital painting whatsoever.
I gave up at a certain point and used this chalk texture thing so I could give it a painterly feel instead but I failed and it looks amateurish

Are there any good tutorials on brush work?
Yes I'm sure I also need to work on some other things. I'll probably need to segment my values a little better next time but I sort of know what direction to go with that

There really is no such thing as being permabeg. It's your choice to waste time believing this shit, no one is irrecoverably born ngmi.

His art isn't even that bad too, he just needs to stop listening to nodraw crabs/trolls. He fell into the normie trap of believing all artists pull art from thin air, when drawing from imagination is not some reliable filter that decides whether you can be an artist or not. I thought this was a child but he's an accountant, it's sad to see adults allowing art insecurity to wreck their mental health. No other hobby (besides maybe music) has this maturity issue, you don't cry, break things and want to kill yourself because your first batch of cookies sucked or you didn't spot a rare bird right away, you need to nurture yourself and treat your failed attempts as experiments to learn from.

Clearly the bottleneck of your process is the sketch-lineart (4 hours). I think the sketch part should be fastest part of the process. Getting lost in all of these processes: 4 hours on sketch/line, fuckload of hours on rendering and more hours on final retouching, is insane. When you should be putting ALL of that effort in just drawing. Stay in the sketch phase and live there. All of the rest will become automatic once you are able to just draw whatever you want with ease and high speed.

Not him but to speak for myself I spent so much time learning the theory of drawing (I'm a cel animation sperg) before ever doing the practical work so when I finally picked up a pencil I felt born ngmi cause I should know better after years of absorption. I know in my head my anatomy/shading/perspective/flow etc is wrong but I can't translate it to my hand co-ordination to just do it right based on the principles and guides I've read it's so frustrating how much muscle memory plays a part but after a few months I don't hate myself I fully accept I gotta experence the learning curve to catch up to the level my brain is at :)

Today shit happens faster and faster. Lies don't last a day. I don't think big cats up there care, they are too powerful and just grab what's on the table without any shame, they don't give a fuck. This is the first time that the betting system has been officially and legally embedded into a world event of this caliber. That final match must have been the biggest heist in human history.
>>8003221
I believe that, because of what I said above, they were lured into doing the flag thing. "Someone" planted the flag there, and they went along with it. That was needed to have an excuse up the sleeve to blackmail them. The team could be sanctioned or even expelled from the tournament (at least the ones involved in the flag action). It was too much money on the table, it was a planned thing. Maybe what we won't know is how much money on bets changed hands on that match, but we already know it was rigged. No doubt.

worthwhile?! It is a fucking MUST. If you can do it, then DO IT. No doubt about it. If you have the time and you have the books, (you can get all of these books for free online too), it would be a crime no to do it.
I remember when buying one of those Yoshitaka Amano's art books costed an arm an a leg, and it was a fucking ripoff, because those books were shit. Now you can find them all online, free. No, I thought the left was in fact newer. It's definitely better.
A couple thoughts I had comparing them: Your latest looks stiff despite having a more bent figure. The back is basically a straight line, continued by her dress.
The hair has more detail but feels 'flat' in comparison because of the thinner strands. The left has that nice swooping line on the back and that tuft on the front giving it more volume.

The frills on the dress and apron are nice.
All in all you really captured the less-is-more essence with the left one, I don't think you should give that up. If you want more detail try to keep that simplicity.
I think just adding the frills and folds of the right to the left would get you what you want? Anyway they're both nice drawings.

You're assuming I'm trying to make a 1:1 copy of a design that isn't even mine. Wrong. I don't do that, I never have, and I couldn't care less about doing it.

The whole reason I draw Touhou is because the designs are simple and recognizable enough that I can do whatever the hell I want with them. Frieren and Fern are the same. They're clean, iconic designs that make a great starting point for my own stuff.

If your only metric is "does it match the reference sheet," then sure, knock yourself out. But don't act like that's some universal rule. That's just your idea of what fan art is supposed to be.

Recopying hide's example skulls from his head course because I did them all wrong the first time, and also throwing in some from imagination along the way.
I think it's important that I get these right because I'm still making major perspective errors when I try to do these, some more obvious (like just completely ignoring the guidelines and putting point A above point B when it should actually be reversed for example) and some more subtle, like forgetting that the "middle line" in an almost-profile view isn't *really* the middle line and there's going to be a lot more of the skull on one side of the middle axis than the other (sometimes I subconsciously start treating it like a perfect 50/50 dividing line and the features start to drift).
Still dealing with general inconsistency and sometimes the skulls not looking very... skeletal, but it's less about drawing skulls per se and more about being able to do perspective and construction.
My biggest concern is just how hard it is to be consistent, I FEEL like I'm doing the exact same construction method every time but it ends up feeling like a gacha where I never know where it's going to go wrong or what it's going to look like and it's just totally beyond me why it works sometimes and why it doesn't.
Anyway I still feel like I'm getting something out of this so I'm going to keep up with the skulls until I'm satisfied.
>>
>>8003622
Forgot to add, I think I'm honestly pretty comfortable with most of the skull at this point but the teeth and jaw just utterly fuck me up, still takes a lot of trial and error to get the jaw looking decent.
>>

Sometimes yeah, but it's often the mid /beg/ drawings that get the fewest responses. If you're a hyper turbo beg people will at least respond to laugh at you and maybe point you to resources, and if you're bordering on /int/ or above then people will respond with praise. It's the big grey middle zone where you get the fewest responses because there's not much to say except "ok, keep going".

I personally think the left design holds its appeal in the contours: the cheeks breach the hair drape displaying a round curve, the bows are gentle and sloped, there's a little 'swoosh' in the apron, her hair is asymmetric and balanced by the tilt of her headband.

Right's silhouette is more rigid: the bows are pointed and jagged, the 90degree frill contours on the dress give it a serrated appearance, the headband is nearly dead center and sticks out like tv-antennae.

Left reminds me of Carlianne Tipsey (Pic related, not my work), great resource for simple designs. Slight touhou vibe from Right, but they are both charming drawings, thank you for sharing.

You should treat this place more like a gym rather than a social media forum. It's only artists and aspiring artists who frequent so most are focused on themselves and honing whatever it is they're trying to improve.

as >>8003618 stated, being specific w/ what your goals are will usually lead people to commenting/pointing out issues, but you should mostly be looking at what you've posted and trying to improve on it/iterate on it.

Sometimes no comments can mean that it's bad, but in my experience it's just that what is wrong/bad about it is obvious so there's not much to say other than glazing it if they like the style/appeal factor enough.

You're on the right track on trying to construct the body but your lines need work. They are shaky and unconfident, bold incorrect lines tend to look better than wishy-washy correct ones. Worry less about being perfect and focus on learning to feel out the volumes instead of the outline.

I'm assuming you used reference for this, in which case good, but you should try drawing the ref 1 or 2 times before trying to implement it in your desired drawing next time to get a feel for it and to work on your confidence.

I'm a self taught asshole tho so take everything I say w/ a tremendous grain of salt.

>>

Thanks, if lines are the worst thing, then I am happy knowing what to improve. I was afraid that there were some terrible mistakes that I can see untill weeks later. I already did redraw it few times, but at later stages there is allways something new to fix. Would tracing your own work work as late fix for scratchy lines? Also I quess I should look for some short linework tutoria, taking any recommendations.
>>
>>8003639
No
All of the perspective books are just books disguised to make you good at drawing environments and and vehicle designs but not actually characters in perspective.
The only real way to get good at characters is to understand the basics of creating and drawing things on different types of perspective grids and drawing the body with those basic concepts in mind from every odd angle you can ad nasueaum until the human form is burned into your subconscious.

You have a lot to figure out in terms of anatomy and proportions, but lines are the most actionable thing you can control right now as you figure those things out. You will see mistakes later, that's inevitable. Don't go back to fix it, instead redo it if it really bothers you.
Don't trace anything unless you're really stumped on a form or shape, and if you do, immediately redraw it w/out tracing.

I don't have any recommendations, in my experience there's no tutorial for this, just practice.

How long have you been studying drawing?
I did this a couple years ago, but worse since I added more ink/paint too, and never used like 98% of it all.

having good perspective intuition is how you can take those crude 3d volumes and create convincing detail on top
and of course also place organic forms (like characters, etc) in them convincingly
but if you have good perspective intuition (and the background is relatively simple) you can also skip the blender part and just use a grid like you mentioned

Great work, anon. I have some thoughts, but keep in mind that I don't know much about you. For example, if you told me that most of these were commissions, it would change my opinion on some of my observations.
What I like:
+ Your work is appealing.
+You spend time on rendering, drapery, and basic backgrounds.
+ There's a consistent theme.
What I don't like:
-the same pose is repeated too often.
-the torsos feel stiff.
-there's not much interaction when there are more than two subjects.

I think you could improve a lot by drawing a wider variety of poses and spending more time sketching. I know bulky bodies are hard to draw dynamically, especially the limbs, but I'd suggest checking out sumo for references. Mainoumi Shuhei and Hakuho Sho are probably the best references for dynamic poses, and aesthetically, Chiyonofuji is my favorite.

As for the interaction issue, make the characters touch each other more. For example, with the two robo girls, I think the idea of them arguing would read better if one of them were pointing at the other chest while the other pressed her rod against the girl's face.

And about the giant WIP try sketching your idea first without worrying about perspective. Once you have a composition you like, start incorporating perspective. also I don't think a top-down view works here because it doesn't make the giant feel big. I'd go with a low-angle, bottom-up view for that kind of effect
I forgot draw atleast the cast shadow of the figure on the ground it would add grounding to the figure.

>>8003484
I think the one on the right shows better progress, but it feels like you're sacrificing appeal for the sake of correctness. What I mean is that the figure on the right has a better gesture and a better balance of shape complexity >>8003517 The sharp > vs \ makes the thumbnail look more interesting and sell the action better. What you're losing, though, is the figure's simplicity and value readability,e.g. bigger waist and firls dark lines

>>8004000
Thank you very much!
Most of the rendered ones are commissions (The squid dress, kiss, and ship choke are requests or gift art)
I appreciate the compliment, I often feel I lack appeal but it's getting better.
You're absolutely correct that I use the same pose too much, definitely something I need to start deliberately doing/working on once I'm finished w/ comms.

I'll give the interactions advice a shot as well.

As for the WIP it's not meant to be a giant, it's a comm for a flying character (warhammer swooping hawk)
It might be too late for this one as I'm gonna get started on lining this, but is there something I can do to make it read better as the intended prompt?

>>8004010
Yeah I guessed, but non the less if I were in the comm business with that type of work I would work on template poses that look incredible for fat/strongman bodies so your pipeline is faster.
> but is there something I can do to make it read better as the intended prompt?
As a beg no draw I cannot help you...

With that description, honestly, what I'm seeing isn't working for me. I don't know anything about warhammer, but it seems like aerial fights are very hard to draw because I haven't found anything that looks particularly good. The best references I've found are some Ironman illustrations, and even those are kind of meh.

I'd take it to the stratosphere, where you can see the curvature of the planet with high contrast, and have it fighting drones instead. That would read as an aerial battle much more clearly... i think

Hello, I just turned 30 and want to channel my midlife crisis into drawing. I'm kind of a retard though, and don't think I do well outside of a structured learning environment. Can anyone here recommend an online course? I don't mind paying, though ideally not past 1k.
>>
>>8004081
>In his 30s and still acting like a snowflake
I hope you end up committing suicide zoomtard i truly do, you will never learn how to draw anyways
>>
>>8004081
Do you have talent? That helps. Depending on your location you will have better or worse options. If you're going for an online option, from the known people in the "online art scene" I only trust Jeffrey Watts:
https://www.youtube.com/@wattsatelier/videos
https://www.wattsatelier.com/
He's a pretty known and respected teacher, and he focus on drawing, wich is what starting people should really focus on.
According to his website you can get a year of online teaching for USD 960. If I have to choose I would prefer him rather than Proko or Mar Brunet online courses.
The other option is to find something near you were you can attend in person, so it gets to be more of a "social" experience. But in my opinion, this art thing is a lonely tormenting self-inflicted curse, that will only work if you have some unhealthy passion about it. If you don't have it, then you will suffer this more than enjoy it.
"Trust the process" is the only advice here, if you have a good teacher that is.
>>
>>8004078
If you can't figure out an excuse to add something degenerate into an exposition scene then maybe you're not the high pervert I thought you were.
>>
>>8004081
It's me >>8004088
I went to check on the Watts Atelier site and there's a mistake on the price the "First month" is USD 80, then is 99 dollars per month, lol. Anyways I don't know how many months should be recommended, I guess it depends on your skill progression.
Personally I would save that money to attend life drawing sessions in actual drawing schools. You can't miss that experience if you're going to try this. And then, you just need to allocate the time to draw everyday, that's the only "secret" to it. Just draw, copy art books, focus on the rough sketching drawing, if you have to just draw sketches for a couple of years DO THAT, it will pay off. Save money to attend real painting classes when you master drawing from imagination. Once you're REAL GOOD at drawing, the the painting thing, becomes a "technical" issue, like learning and getting used to handling the tools: brushes, paintings, canvases, mixing, maintenance of the tools, archiving of your work, etc. The drawing part is the REAL thing, it may take years and years to master drawing, that's all what really matters. Leave painting and rendering for the future. That will be the easy part, when the time comes to tackle that.

at the beginner level I wouldn't even worry about that kinda stuff, just focus more on nailing the shapes and getting the proportions right, maybe just imply texture if you want to add detail rather than worrying about lighting / shading
would also recommend making the reference image grayscale and blurring it a bit, so you're not distracted by the color info and can get a clear read on value, and the blur simplifies the shapes as if you're squinting which is often recommended when drawing from life
another trick when drawing from reference is to crop it so the subject fits into a box, that way you can draw the 'trapped shapes' which is often easier than trying to blindly draw the contour

Thanks. I'll try out enveloping/plumb lines. Full grids at a glance seem like they'd probably make progress slower, though? Like it would probably help me make a better drawing, but at the cost of learning less. Am I wrong there?

the good thing about grids is that they train your eyes to make comparative angle judgements against verticals and horizontals (as well as keeping proportions in check), and you can adjust difficulty by making the grid more or less dense (with the 2x2 grid as your goal)
but I know that there's a bias here that looks down on grids, so use envelopes if you prefer

I mean, the character takes so much of the frame that it is really difficult to pay any attention to the background. And because there is very little difference in values between the character and the BG, they mix up, especially the weapon with the bridge behind it. I would at least try to do something like a light line on the edges of the character to separate, or perhaps play with light/shadow/values or color saturation between the character and the background.

If you want to emphasize the background, the composition should be made so the character doesn't take so much of the space available.

Take a brief look at this Krenz artwork. The scenery is the main focus, so the characters not only take up less space, but even their demeanor/pose direct us towards the beautiful landscape. There are many ways to play with composition to dictate the viewer's attention.

The colors are fine. I wouldn't use colorblindness as a crutch. Instead, focus on values and light. I bet there's a guide to color correction or color grading for people with colorblindness. Maybe working in the LAB color space, or another color space, will make this easier for you. Even if the colors look different, as long as the values are solid, the final result will look good.

As for the piece itself, start with the big shapes and planes first. Make the hairline more defined, and homogenize the skin values. For example, her left cheek looks dirty because of the amount of local value variation. Here's a quick comparison to show what I mean.

I think is the way you painted it aside from the cool design as well, it has that retro pro vibe. This is the kind of cool design art you would expect to see in japanese art books from arcade shooters maybe.
I like the square landing gear housing on the sides too, you naturally understand how to make simple and functional shapes to make sense and look good.

Thanks anon this is is useful. It's amazing how much difference a few small changes make.
I do work in values, initially starting with 4 values and then slowly expanding them.
This is an earlier stage of the painting before I added value variation to the far cheek.
I think the main takeaway here is that I should avoid adding detail to the light planes unless it is really necessary for the structure?
Also I think at this point I should have realized that the near cheek is really a light plane and just committed to it rather than having it be somewhere between light and midtone.

Toxic communities have to remain isolated from mainstream registered social platforms. Don't turn yourself into the weak link for the cruel abuse of people you don't know, specially here. It's not necessarily because I don't know how to, but wouldn't different sets of clothing affect the body especially for women? Like if I drew a nude woman's body, wouldn't her tits droop because of gravity and be affected in it's position because of her wearing say bras or tight fitting clothing? Should you account for that while you're drawing the nude base? But then you won't be copy pasting the same nude base if she had other clothing

I could, but that would make the exposition scene to get over extended. I prefer to cram all of the text in one page and then go immediately back to the sexy scenes. If I were getting paid for this then I would have to add some sexy courtesan ladies in a well drawn and detailed king's hall, and some sexy prisoners in the witch's dungeon, but I ain't got no time for that extra effort. Gotta focus on the elves getting caught and interrogated.

I believe forms are not being felt, especially with the folds flattening the volumes of both
consider your use of value, right now you're placing / wasting a lot of it on the table, when it should be used around your focal points
>>8004733
the image is hard to read from the thumbnail, which suggests that the value structure is messy
grouping your values would help with this, and avoid puting your lightest and darkest values next to each other in areas that are not the focal point
>>8004587
cute scene, I really like the simple storytelling in it
the perspective is interesting but gets distorted the further from the sofa chair, especially noticible around table in the bottom
the space around the chair feels empty, I'd add some domestic props to make it more lively
I'm not sure about the type of light you're using, the windowsill gets another light from somewhere else, and there doesn't seem to be any light falloff in the floor
it's also pretty strange to have a light turned on that close by when you're not reading a book

funny, I'm the exact opposite. I've been a 3Dfag for years now, done it all, low poly, mid poly, PS1 & PS2 style environments, sculpting etc, and I now find myself here because I'm fucking sick of it
I suppose it depends entirely on what visual fidelity and style you're targeting, but prepare to start pulling your hair out at one point or another
assuming it's a 3D game, you would have to learn: modelling, UV unwrapping, texturing (environments, characters and props), rigging, animating, weight painting, lighting, level blockout and design (good fucking luck doing this in blender btw), basic sound design, coding, collision. the list likely goes on
optionally: creating your own textures (basic image editing is more or less essential even if you don't make them from scratch since photo textures can only do so much), high to low poly baking, texel density management (depending on whether it's PS1 style)
>if i learn anatomy in 3d it will help if i ever feel like doing 2d again.
the whole 2D 3D overlap is a bit of a meme. however I would argue that 2D artists have the advantage going into 3D than the opposite, since they'll have a stronger understanding of form, proportion, appealing design, an ability to handpaint models and create textures, the ability to create character turnarounds to model over, and an easier time sculpting since they'll have a better understanding of anatomy from the get-go so they're not having to learn how to sculpt and learn anatomy at the same time
I'd just caution switching between the two and really laser focus on one, so you don't end up like me having wasted roughly 5 years or so on something they don't enjoy. 3D might feel more intuitive to you, as it does for me, but I can't say I enjoy it much at all. if you hate drawing with a passion and find that 3D sparks joy, I guess go for it. idk man do whatever the fuck you gotta do

3d removes a few dimensions of complexity from art. there's no perspective. there's no gesture. you don't have to worry about visualizing the forms because you can construct them with precision and view them from every angle.

if you do have to draw something, it's an orthographic projection without the need for anything like pose, perspective, shading, etc. it just needs to serve as a plan for the modeler.

I don't think your figures are stiff, but they do feel a bit ambiguous. You need to exaggerate the poses more, especially the angles and overlaps to make the intended action as clear as possible. For example, on the left side it's obvious that the figure is bending, but on the right side it's hard to tell whether it's bending or standing upright. I think adding a bit more overlap would help sell the pose, added an example of what I'm referring to.
I think you draw the individual parts well, but you have some trouble connecting them, especially around the neck and shoulders, the waist, and the ankles. That said, your drawings are really cute. Keep going!

Complete beginner. I want to be able to sketch landscapes while I travel. I hate watching YouTube tutorials (I don't actually learn anything 90% of the time) and I just enjoy drawing without really know how. Any tips? I'm not a fan of trying to learn things through theory. Is "just draw" bad advice? I'm very busy, working 48+ hours for the next few weeks, but I'm doing this for one hour after work to relax and I hope I can make semi decent progress. I have pen and pencils at disposal.

From pics but I want to upgrade to real life asap. Is it wrong to not be completely faithful to what im copying? Sometimes there's elements that won't look clear what they're supposed to be (aka i can't render it) or just outright look like it would look bad. So I only use the reference for the first ten mins before ditching it.
I have enough space to carry around one book so maybe I'll buy it.
