What is the end point of an art style? I see people online whose art style has not changed or improved over several years and wonder why they have not tried getting better. Is it just complacence?
>>
>>8008988
The urge to draw and create outweighs the need to improve. Many people learn enough to get by then make the same art for years on end and never try to learn and improve. I know this because it's me.

To have your personal brand, it literally doesn't matter if you are not a beg or /adv/

>Beginners develop an early style because they are copying other artists, this is good but they will eventually be required to learn fundamentals without relying on references
>Advanced artists that can draw in different styles and understand the fundies but now they want to have their own touch

Everything else is larp.

These people don't care about artstyles like chairoscuro, artists, art, etc. They want to be known even if they lack good fundamentals by shtting and pissing themselves every time they post.

And this is why you should watch EO58 and other Koreans. ignore the western hemisphere, it's poisoned beyond salvation.

>>8008988
there's "the way your draw" aka your natural 'art style', like how everyone has a handwriting style. it could be clearly legible or barely readable. most people stop trying to make their handwriting any better once it's readable.
when drawing, unconscious choices make the end result look a certain way. like always drawing legs too long by accident or having inconsistent lineart because you lack the skills to do it consistently.
then there's where good artists deliberately draw in a certain way. like The Simpsons style having 4 fingers on each hand and yellow skin. it's developed over time and stylized to give a certain aesthetic. that takes a lot of high level skills and a clear goal or direction from a supervisor. even pros need their work corrected to keep the style consistent.
getting better is very difficult and takes a long time. unless you have a very clear goal, it's hard to pinpoint what you want your art to look like. once people are past the complete beginner stage, they get into the comfort zone and become complacent.
>>
>>8009010

Really sounds like a cope. Of course you can have a style without selling. Style and the lack thereof can be seen at almost any level.
I guess pre/beg/ cannot have style, because they don't even know what they are doing.

There's a very skilled artist on /fig/ who has no style whatsoever. A very generic, soulless approach. There's a slightly worse one who has a very idiosyncratic approach. Don't fear he power and joy of style!

Trying to get better at full figures since I've kind of been stuck in a rut of just drawing heads and attaching a bust to them. I actually seem to have difficulty with drawing figures as one contiguous whole from the outset, I've kind of resorted to drawing a bunch of disconnected floating parts and then connecting them together to make the figure instead. The typical gesture drawing process just doesn't seem to jibe with my brain for some reason. Do these characters feel like they're on the same ground plane? Do they feel balanced? Please crit.
>>8009039
Color and contrast mainly. The dark spots on the man is dirt, darker and cooler than his skin. The lighter spots are either scarring (suggested by the shape and color) or possibly his true skin color showing where lighter soiling on his skin has been rubbed off. The colors and shapes of the markings are determined by and suggest what they are to the viewer. What is the purpose of the markings on the woman? That would go a long way to making them feel more natural. If you look at the reference, though, you'll see that the lighter colored sections are only a little bit lighter than he rest of his skin.

My sketches tend to look more like rough lineart, I don't really know how to do it in the same way most people tend to. I kind of just iterate until I decide where everything needs to be and then do the final lines overtop. This one was based on 3D models so I could find the viewing angle I liked of specific poses, and I took some photos of myself for some clothing references

If you can't decide, pick one at random.

There's a selection of books in the OP if you're desperate for something to follow, but there's no magic step-by-step process you can follow to go from zero to perfect. Ultimately the best way to learn to draw is to draw. Put something down on the page/screen, find something wrong with it, practice how to do that better, try again. Post it here for feedback if you're that uncertain over your ability to appraise your own work.

>-know what mistakes to make.
I don't this. Explain
>>
>>8009290
It’s something you’ll understand more as you draw. Basically you have to understand that you will 100% make a mistake-but you have to develop the skills to ensure that the mistake is not to the detriment of the quality of the drawing. Like for example, if you’re drawing the eyes, you would much rather have the pupils slightly misplaced in each eye as opposed to having one eye an inch above the other, which is wildly anatomically incorrect. It’s just about knowing that you’ll mess up, but having a conscious awareness of WHEN to mess up.

omg i love this work, post more anon.

and if you have the will, could you answer some questions? i'm genuinely curious about how you construct your drawings:

- how do you usually start a drawing? do you begin with gesture/pose, silhouette, proportions, or something else?
- do you use an under-sketch, or is the visible linework already your sketch?
- do you usually work from large shapes to small details, or do you jump between different areas?
- when drawing the body, do you mentally represent parts as 3D volumes (boxes, cylinders, spheres, etc.), even if you don't actually draw the construction?
- do you consciously use anatomical landmarks, axes, perspective, or proportions to place things?
- when drawing foreshortened forms, how do you figure out their size and orientation?
- do you think about the 3D surface underneath a contour line, or are you mainly thinking about the 2D shape/design of the line?
- do you use construction/contour lines temporarily and erase them later?
- how much do you correct while drawing? do you rely heavily on undo/eraser, or do you try to place lines correctly on the first attempt?
- do you draw mostly from reference, imagination, or a mixture of both?
- when you don't know exactly how a form should look, what do you do to figure it out?

i'm especially curious about whether the construction is happening on the canvas, or mostly in your head.

the image depicts roughly where I'm at, for context.

you should have planned before drawing it, but i think that you should split the pages, add a panel between the dick showing up and the full on sex panels and on the next page place the sex panel up top and a more kinky panel below, like a closeup of the penetration or of girl getting fucked's expression

I appreciate the feedback but I think I'll keep it simple and sperate the pages or make the right panel more centered.

I don't want to split the last panel, or add another scene. It's the first time I've made a comic strip and it took three days of trying to plan rough sketch and constant erasing/fixing and I'm still not finished.
All I meant was that I'm going to keep it simple, but I do like the ideas you've placed and will use them in a future comic.

>how you construct your drawings
very loosely, some ovals or boxes to have a starting point(picrel)
>consciously use anatomical landmarks
some of them like pit of the neck, asis, venus dimples, seventh cervical vertebra, etc
>foreshortened forms
mostly eyeballing it, after practicing a bit of basic perspective, you can make relatively ok-ish guesses, It's impractical to have to draw a horizon line and vanishing points every time you want to draw a figure
>how much do you correct while drawing
a lot, really
>do you draw mostly from reference
mixture of both
>form should look, what do you do to figure it out
look for reference
>happening on the canvas
I would join if someone hosted a drawing session somewhere, but I'll warn you that I draw slowly, very slowly

This is kind of what I do when trying something really difficult that I don’t understand. Usually, trying to draw a crude, rotated version helps me place things, and there’s a lot of erasing involved.

>>8009582
Love it, super graphic! I would avoid a straight on poses like in the main horse head, because they’re harder to read. A simple tilt can make it much easier to describe the volume.

The way you placed the panels is good, the height of the big fourth panel being shorter than the other group of three to indicate the reading sequence, is evident and very well done.
Trust your instincts, you have obvious untapped talent, just keep going. Allow "errors" to happen, so you can identify them, and choose what you consider "errors" or not.
This is excellent stuff.

Definitely I would try to do more nude figure drawing to learn the proportions of the basic building blocks of the figure. Try to think in terms of geometric shapes and CSI lines, and focus on mastering proportion (3d proportion esp) for the next few years. Learn to train your eyes to draw things more accurately, though this is a never ending journey. There is infinite skill to be gained in learning to draw accurately.

Some use an inner voice that narrates their thoughts, while others think through images, or both.
Therefore, each person has a different process for sketching their ideas; there are professional artists who have said they don't know how to draw without some level of construction, like boxes and action lines.
The artist in question
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvxsG9TolBg
There's no set recipe or step to step math formula, you use what your brain adapts to best
I haven't saved the timelapse of the sketch phase of that figure because when I do that, the file size increases from 10MB to 300MB, so saving all the practice sessions is impractical

What I can do for you is record a timelapse of the next figure. I also have an old timelapse saved here, but it's kinda old as I said, so it doesn't seem to be very good.

There is, loomis is extremely popular in japan for a reason. You can't draw if you can't construct, the entire drawing process is based on shape constructing, some understand spaces and rotations through boxes or spheres but they all lead to the same thing, creating spaces that look tridimentional.

People that don't know how to construct reek of fake
>>
>>8009769
Not all the time, it's easy to draw from imagination. it just takes more brain power.

The courses are a starting point for those who don't know where to begin.
There are different methods for drawing, and people choose the one they feel makes the most sense to them
>>
>>8009769
loomis is a tool not a rule
>>
>>8009767
plz gib talent.
>>
>>8009770
You are bruteforcing it by copy pasting.

Actual imagination involves well.. imagining the pose, the shapes and their rotations before constructing them.

Calling foul play , exactly the same type of conversations that i used to have with the Brazilian copy paster cheater

And only because you reek of desperation
>>
its the sharty shitter again
please do not engage
>>
>>8009775
It's a rule, some people can't rotate sphere so they often switch to boxes which are slightly less accurate but they are easier to understand.

It's not a tool or tools, they are rules, super basic rules even , if begs understand how a shape exists in a plane and you don't then i'm calling foul play.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsw03rT2E3M
>>
or you can always like you know, symbol draw by using references or literally copying / stealing other's art. All depends on your desperation.

Some newfriends recommend "artists" that use AI like ..er.. the guy that draws porn from france, so you obviously lack the intelligence to notice faces, shapes, spaces and forms or how to rotate them in an empty space (beg tier btw). Yeah i don't know, keep rolling rolling bro you got this, whip another galaxy can lil bro
>>
>>8009776
i heard bob ross say talent is a pursued interest
>>
but most important of all i'm calling foul play because of the desperation.

Like a fatherless child who takes care of his retarded brother, that kind of sociopathy that can only be ingrained to the dregs of society. Whip the galaxy can bro, you got this, copy another AI pin up pose, humans can't tell the difference anyway.

Becoming an artist or a teacher is not the end goal , at least i hope it's not, you need a stable life before getting into a hobby or having rich parents, that helps too. What's stable anyways? it's 2026 and the majority is rotten to the core.

eternal reminder that the eraser wasn't invented until 1770
is everyone that used an eraser after this year less of an artist than the ones that came before, since they're making their art process easier?
how far do we take that line of logic? are cavemen more skilled artists because they painted on the contours of caves rather than a far easier and predictable flat canvas?

>idk if she is falling or moving forward or what, anyways, avoid drawing her skirt like a bowl, it looks like a pencil skirt so it shouldnt fly like that, also is her hair that long?? depending of where is her body moving it could flow like the ref or like i did here in case shes moving forward, also if you want to follow the ref more, you could make her shoe a little smaller to imply some foreshortening like the ref

The bowl shape admittedly was me trying to figure out how the general shape would look, but even when it was like that I cringed and I knew I was on the wrong path. As for the hair, I made it that long only because I was trying to figure out how the reference piece did the hair (the super long part is supposed to be a scarf idea). The shoe's a good call. I think I have some ideas, I'll try drawing up a new pose concept with the previous suggestions as well. Thank you so much for the great feedback!

Explain the composition you have in your head and how it's not lining up with what you draw.
Also, you can't escape laying down some basic perspective for this. It'll look weird until you do.
Regardless, drawing these different angles is good practice so don't get discouraged.
>>
>>8010371
nothing too deep just small hero faces big towering boss on throne, it's less about the overall composition and more about the form looking wonky

There's a hundred different ways to depict it, so it's okay to let the angle help you a bit when it comes to the sitting figure.
>form looking wonky
Well it is drawn wonky. The way the legs come out of the hips make it look strange. Imagine it standing up. It would have massive bow legs the way it's drawn. Even with legs spread they'd come together closer at the groin.
Also what someone else said earlier in the thread would help here. Draw the throne first, treat it as a 3D object and consider the depth of it when you place your character. The underside of the thighs and the groin would be obscured if you placed it properly in the seat.
It's late so I can't muster anything better, but take it as you will.

Thank you so much anon! I'm so glad you liked her!
>I don't know how you pump out so many comics so fast but you have my respects for the dedication
I'm drawing at low resolution and that speed up the process a lot. Like with your Ekka fanart, I used a 3000x3000px canvas the whole canvas, so I can draw much better figures and details, shapes, poses, and it takes more time as well. Those comics are tiny in comparison so everything becomes much much simpler and faster. Also I don't use reference so I do automatic poses from imagination, that helps with doing it really fast but it also makes the quality of the figures to be not so good, I'm just halfassing everything. BUT, ultimately the project will get finished, hopefully xD
>>8009819
>What the hell, draw more anime faces like this and hips more like this. Other than the legs this is becoming much more appealing
THANKS ANON! Actually, doing something appealing and pretty should be easy, if you commit to it. I used OP's Ekka as ref wich has a VERY beautiful face style, I'm just mimicking her original design. I do random faces and bodies, for fun. If I get "meticulous" I have to get "serious", and then, this becomes "work" instead of "fun". Work is slow. Fun is fast

i think it's probably the line weight; they get thinner and sharper as you go up the figure, which feels a bit weird. try making everything the same line weight to start and see how that looks. thickest lines should be where you want the viewer to look, so in this case the ass and face. her armpit also looks really messy and weird.

i'm starting to believe the talent fag. everyone can learn how to draw, how to paint, how to gesture but only few people are able to make drawings that pop out, completely jaw dropping, as if you were watching a movie stuck in time and place, they don't even need colors a simple rakugaki with black ink is more than enough for them. i am learning from Xiao's book that I should find the crotch using the x method on a flat surface to find like the cross section
then somehow make it 3d

>>
>>8010921
You have an imaginary flat plane cutting straight through the middle of your 3D object.
Because it’s just a flat rectangle, you can easily divide it up into sections, exactly identical to your normal flat front view proportion map.
But a 3D object has depth, it’s not just squished onto a flat plane. So you need to draw lines perpendicular to your flat plane, protruding outwards as far as they need to go to hit the actual surface of the object.
This is why people say draw boxes. What are you doing when you draw a box? You’re taking a flat rectangle in space and drawing lines that are perpendicular to that surface.
>>
>>8010921
What page? he's using a box for the space and a basin shape for the hips. Great book btw, not hard to understand and easy to follow, probably the hardest thing is to draw the muscle shapes on top of the basic/box correctly if you don't know how they look (cause you are paralaplegic)

Today’s skulls from imagination. I’m basically happy with the front and side views. The front view still feels like it has some “muscle” on it for some reason but I checked the vertical proportions and they’re spot on so I’m just going to move on.
The 3/4ths view turned out ok but I did kinda BS the construction and have to jiggle some parts around until they looked right so I’ll need to figure out what went wrong and correct it. Some individual details wrong too but that’s not as big a deal as getting the perspective and construction right.
I do feel like I’m making progress and now that I know I can get the proportions of the front view and side view correct I’m more confident that I can figure out the other angles. Just a matter of keeping at it and continuing to chop away at the mistakes

Hello.
I am thinking about drawing. But for now I want to try with pencils and erasers. The basic stuff on paper.
Then get into digital drawing. How are Huion tablets on Linux? I'm planning on using Bazzite KDE if that matters.
I don't see myself becoming a professional digital artist, but I feel like this drawing hobby is just something worth giving a shot.
>but
I made a lot of accounts from deviantart to newgrounds etc. back when I wanted to make animations a long time ago but never did. Is it gonna be a bad sign if I reuse those old accounts suddenly? Some are as old as 2014.

The drawing itself is good, I think it's the composition that makes it look a bit wrong. The pose suggests that the girl should be the focal point of the drawing but there's a lot of background which diverts attention from her, so it's not clear what the drawing wants you to look at
>>
accidentally managed to draw a proportionate human and thought I had gotten better
>>
>>8011533
You can change it from an accidental thing to an all the time thing.
Memorize what the proportions look like from front and side view. Draw them over and over until you can draw them correctly from memory without looking at anything. Then you’ll always have them with you
>>
How does one deliberately shift style?

Just brute force studies of the aesthetic you're aiming for while trying to pick apart what makes the style the style? It feels like it's frustratingly difficult to get a hold on the specifics of a look when the look is a product of its individual parts: practicing the parts in isolation feels unproductive because it's hard to judge "is this how they're using color" when comparing against references that are the use of color AND line AND composition AND lighting, etc. But then the alternative of practicing all of the parts as a cohesive whole feels like biting off way more than you can reasonably chew or process at a time.

I have no talent and I did >>8011181 I know it still has problems but it looks better than what I was doing a few weeks ago and I think I’ll keep improving if I keep working at it.
Imagination is just knowing the proportions of the object and what it looks like from front/side/top views, then being able to take those flat proportion plans and rotate them in space using perspective. The thing that makes it feel impossible to people is that they skip steps and just try to start drawing something right away without having a clear idea of what the structure of the object actually is.
>>
>>8011963
So to expand on that, if you want to draw moe then start by finding simple references of moe style heads that you want to copy. Front view and profile view. Then learn how to draw those from memory, copy them exactly, don’t deviate from the reference at all. Once you’ve internalized those proportions and have them committed to memory then you can start trying to get fancier, draw the head from different angles, different facial expressions, etc.

It seems pointless; anime lacks realistic anatomy, so you can't really analyze the placement of the mid-face, eyes, mouth, eyebrows, and so on. It’s like physics or advanced mathematics. I’ve studied plenty of anime faces and grasped all the nuances in theory—for instance, how eyebrows sit right next to the eyelids in some shows but not others—but it’s total chaos, and the underlying logic just doesn't hold up.
>>
>>8011963
>I have no talent and I drew a rotated 3d skull from imagination
You fucking bragging talentniggers just love thinking you are all hard work and no talent to inflate your ego even more.
Cant you accept that you are talented and have it easier than others? There are plenty of permabegs here who have been drawing for farnlonger to you with hundreds and thousands of shit scribbles to show for it who never got a sense for 3d and cant draw from imagination worth shit but you somehow arent talented at all when compared to them?
Go fuck yourself you fucking talentnigger. Fucking humblebragging piece of shit. Not only do you have to show off how good you are but you also have to demean everyone else and try to claim you tried harder than anyone else. Go fuck yourself
>>
Everyone constantly draws the eyes either below, above, or right on the midline. But what about the bridge of the nose? The eyebrows and the length of the forehead? The face ends up positioned too low or too high.

>>8011991
Anatomy relies on patterns, but anime doesn't follow them; those patterns don't work when you're copying the style or drawing from imagination. Anime constantly breaks these rules, making it difficult even to copy accuratelyfor instance, the standard forehead structure is distorted, making it nearly impossible to map out the rest of the face, as everything is disproportionate.
>>
>>8011993
>the standard
is irrelevant.

If I just start drawing for 5-6 hours a day and treat it like a job while I'm a neet, will I get better faster?
Is this the type of skill where I can just immerse myself in it like language learning for improved results? Or should I limit it to controlled practice for limited windows like learning an instrument?

question regarding details, is it just random?
like for example you are drawing a shredded bicep or folded clothing and you know how to add the details but obviously you are not gonna go all out because it will look off, like you will not add all the lines on the bicep to not look 0 percent fat all muscle fibers through the skin
but how do you decide the number of lines and when they vanish?
