Asked in the book general but got nothing, and to some extent I expected that because I sorta doubted there'd be a dedicated book on the subject matter. Is there a really good preferably very comprehensive course for shape design specifically? I'm running into a gap with producing, intentionally, really pleasing shapes rather than just shapes that are serviceable for their role.

Is it? Maybe? I'm not attempting to follow something I picked up on /ic/, I just don't know what else you would call what I'm referring to because any sort of "pleasing shapes" or something to that effect just gives you back mid tier abstract art stuff about arranging 2D primitives in a composition. It seems to me (could be dunning-krugering) a lot of artists use shapes in functional roles, they draw good shapes but in service to the picture and then what makes the picture great is rendering and color and other stuff. Like an 99/100 drawing where 15 is shape and 84 is from other stuff. But there are artists where the first thing that leaps out in shape, and the rest is subdued and in service to elevate a drawing that is already great without the other stuff.

Like pic related (I've removed the color and surrounding composition, and balanced the values to scrub it down so that line and shape are largely what is left). It is a nice looking picture simply for the fact that somehow triangles are being drawn in an aesthetically pleasing way and If there is an in depth explanation from someone on what thoughts go into making a triangle or an oval or a series of cylinders look great just as they are. There is some of this out there, but it's extremely piecemeal in a way that is unhelpful, because it's usually like a brief comment in a course or book or what have you that is otherwise just about figure drawing or another broader subject or "I dunno, do studies of someone with good shapes I guess".

There's a recent-ish torrent (2 months old) that has Krenz, and Tenten, and others' courses.

Is this even an isolated subject? Old anime used more elaborate traditionally painted backgrounds, new anime and most VNs just use the simpler regular anime approach to coloring and linework, but drawing buildings and trees instead of waifus. What would such a course even teach you? To use cell shadows instead of more traditional shading and what kind of colors to pick?

Feels like anything an "anime-style BG course" would tell you is just something already covered in any regular anime-style course about characters, except for background specific things (types of perspective and lighting, how to deal with foliage, etc) that you could likely get in better detail and explanation from some course on traditional (western) painting. Most anime BGs are really simple and the ones that are stand out tend to be the ones that just lean away from the simplification and towards just being regular painted/watercolor/concept art landscapes or scenes.

tl;dr watch regular landscape/environmental painting stuff, use anime lines and color palettes.

Anon (you?) asked about courses on anime-style backgrounds, but anime-style backgrounds are just regular painted/drawn backgrounds with the same approaches to stylization/simplification that are applied to anime characters applied to environmental objects instead. Like being flat/cell-shaded, or fully lined.

e.g. an anime classroom is just painting a normal classroom, but with the lineart heavy approach of anime, and the colors/saturation typical to anime (the same ones that are happening to anime characters)

The higher quality that anime BGs tend to be, the more they are just regular landscape painting, not even particularly "anime" outside of the character stylization. So in my opinion, anon (or you or whatever) would be better off just doing a regular high quality anime course like any of the popular ones, and then watching videos or courses on the techniques used in normal landscape painting than looking for a thing that is specifically, isolated "how 2 draw animeVN backgroundz" which would likely just tell you stuff that was in the general anime courses and (some) stuff that was in the regular landscape painting.

Do the html files in Oridays' course do anything other than give the script for the videos? Because their size is insane for what they contain. On average 20-30MB for just a bit of text and some CSS.
The size of the entire course could be reduced to half or a third just by deleting those files. Am I doing something wrong or are they really pretty much useless?

Oridays course has a lot of basics explained simply and concisely with a clear example for each part. It's a like a series of YouTube shorts explaining all the basics of drawing.
It's not bad, though I wouldn't say it's very good due to how concise it is and how few examples his explanations provide.
I have the impression this course is best for artists who already know how to draw from copying or just bruteforcing it without having studied the fundamentals. The course gives them a crash course to improve their drawings by making sense of their mistakes and areas they might struggle with.
Not really for an absolute beginner.

Absolutely nobody enjoys grinding those challenges, thats some cope. Grinding floating objects like that is inefficient, you will learn sure but its all out of context. Also why isnt it rather cubes? Youre literally just drawing random boxes without thinking about proportion. Confident lines comes with just drawing more. The content in drawabox is fine because its just regurgitated dynamic sketching course content, its tried and tested. The fact that drawabox is advertised as a pure beg just starting drawing course is a joke as well, a pure beg should be learning observation and flat shape first not jumping right into a dynamic sketching course which focuses on construction.
