I'm a pretty dire /beg/ as is evident, but how should i approach learning to paint digitally? I think sculpting with larger brush strokes and color picking is a lot more fun than trying to do clean lines, even though im kind of ass at it.

I cant seem to make things feel three-dimensional, and i seem to get stuck in trying to "draw" even if im trying to paint. As in, I'm trying to outline my subject with the brush.

Is there something you guys did/still do, to break away from that?

I guess what I can say to the initial question is: try binary light, aka cel shading. It would force you to think about what is inside the contours and not allow you to wiggle away with vague brushing. Or maybe not.
How can I recommend doing studies if it's something I'm avoiding? But it is something I believe is good to do, and everyone would say it is good for you. So yeah.

I think you need to zoom in quite a lot, as it stands I can't tell if I'm getting vored or she's getting a facial but you haven't drawn the cum yet. I could see other ways to make it less ambiguous like pointer teeth, more saliva or stretching her mouth with her fingers but zooming enough to have her ears touch the corners should improve it already

Bro. The character looks good. I guess what you need is to work on background or scenery / composition.
The city and road on the background kind of look as if they were floating in the middle of nowhere, and the dark strokes in front of the city and road (are those hills/mountains?) seem out of place and harm the perspective.
Other than that, it looks really good to me.

1. The heart
2. A huge circle which under closer inspection appears to be some sort of water surface (but why is only that part illumianted
3. A mangled figure that doesnt flow with the compolsition
4. another figure which should be a major part of the composition but it's so nonvisible its basically an easter egg

one cheek of miku's ass is higher than the other, aka they are rotated about the x axis, the face and the rest of the body are consistent with that so basically that says that she is rotated in one way, while teto is vertical, so she is rotated another way, honestly teto as a whole is a mess like the perspective on the head/face is also wrong and her tits are way too high up, upper back is too round etc
technically miku is wrong even on her own because to rotate herself that way you actually need ropes (lol) or to rotate the camera about her (like the earth goes around the sun, not about its own axis) and you'd be looking down from above but her neck is like stiff and the face is straight on
its all a poorly thought out mess
>>
I remembered I CANT FUCKING DRAW and now I am depressed again.
>>
>>8040482
Miku looks as if you're looking straight at her but Teto looks as if you're looking up to her (she's looking down on you), so there's a mismatch of perspectives.
>>
>>8040501
A simple solution would be to move Miku lower or Teto higher. That way Miku is sitting down (and you're at her eye level) while Teto is standing up and looking down on you (while you look up at her).

Need to learn perspective and construction. Start with a sphere or box, decide which way it’s facing in space, go from there. Need to keep the 3D form in mind even for angles that are close to direct frontal.
Use Loomis, use hide, doesn’t really matter who you learn from

i’m learning to use procreate, and studying still lives. why does the rendering here appear muddy and artificial? why are the forms unconvincing? thank you for any feedback.

>>8040691
your accuracy is very high. i like this illustration. you have a high amount of shading and detail on every part of the image, so it appears flatter than it has to. im referring to the hair and lips here, you shouldn’t draw every individual strand. also the dot hatching on her face can look like stubble, and you don’t want that. but this is a lovely piece of art

>>8040638
really nice anon

>>8040633
i enjoy this art. have you thought about experimenting with heavier line weight in areas where for example the figures are facing away from the light, or are pressing against other forms? you do it a little, but your lines overall appear uniform. i like your anatomy and the hatching on the face of the rightmost creature

>>8040631
you should be happy with this anon, it looks good! next time consider making your hatching slower and more even. i know it’s tedious, but careful uniform pencil hatching can really level up your illustrations. i know you know the anatomy of the ear is not there, but im saying it anyway. take a look at a 3d model on sketch fab, an astro head from google images, or the ear pages in anatomy for sculptors if you’d like a way to learn; the ear is an annoying little bastard. good luck

Finished this drawing last night. I did some things differently on this drawing; I told you guys last time I tend to put the base colors, shading, highlights etc all on one layer, but this time I made it a point to keep them on separate layers. I also made a color palette off to the side that I'd eyedrop in rather than, well, not doing that (normally I'd just eyedrop in the drawing itself, but I figured the palette would keep the colors more consistent).
Another thing I did was sprinkle in some red along the terminator, because I was watching a Marc Brunet video on rendering skin and learned about 'subsurface scattering.'
Anyway, I'm working hard to git gud guys, hopefully this drawing isn't seen as beg tier as my last one. But all feedback welcome, I appreciate the honesty I get from here.

>I don't see what you're saying. Maybe an edit to make it clearer what you mean would be helpful to all of us.
What I said is pretty straightforward, though. Did you try doing what I said (placing Miku lower and/or Teto higher) and look for yourself whether it works?
>>
>>8040533
>>8040586
Yes, it is, but the problem is that you aren't catching the feel. You're trying to imitate the posture rather than recreating it, and that's why it doesn't come out well.
I'm a beginner too, but something I realized is that you have to EXAGGERATE the gesture so that it looks similar to the pose. If you try to draw it very closely to the model, it looks wrong or stiff or clumsy, but if you exaggerate the pose, the gesture actually comes pretty close to the reference model.

Your style should allow you to draw a lot more, keep that minimalist style and draw more. The main problem people has is to take too much time to make a piece, instead of making at least a drawing per day, they make a drawing per week, (if even). Keep this simple style and draw as much as you can, you will refine it as you go.

maybe add more mass to the back of her skull. breasts are confusing or slightly inaccurate here. have my beg redline. Hello, /beg/. May I ask for some advice?
How does one handle the intense shame/despair that accompanies drawing as an utter beginner? It has stopped me almost dead in my tracks every time I have tried to take art seriously. I'm trying to make a habit of drawing but I yet again find myself hiding behind simple exercises; I know I will only stagnate in time and burn out again before I even get anywhere.

i really like the way you draw hands, but you seem to be slightly unsure about the anatomy of the torso and neck. the bulk of the mass in the torso is in the upper section ribcage.

>>
>>8040806
form of the stomach and where it meets the thighs is particularly nice here. pay attention to proportions of your girl. feet are supposed to be roughly the length of the forearms, and calves only a little longer than that. if you're drawing a chubby girl, you might want to make her a bit softer on the neck and calves. especially her calves, as hers are incredibly skinny and disproportionate. all depends ofc on how you want to stylize her

>>8040878
i like these quite a bit anon. i like your forms and i like your lines. what system are you using to draw these girls/who are you referencing, if anyone?
boxes on top are slightly wonky, and shadows are plotted out incorrectly. love these and you're goals
>>
>>8041024
my one complaint here is the heels. looks like you guessed instead of referencing. otherwise, gorgeous stylish and full of energy. she's very cute.
>>8041034
i don't know if this fits your goals, but next time, try drawing one long line very quickly instead of many many lines over each other for the final piece. this is something artists tend to call "chicken scratching". keep up the art anon.

>>8041058
i quite like the way you've stylized her head. i was unable to determine what was happening in this image for like a minute straight; focus on the anatomy of the hands groping her so it does not appear like they are a part of her body. she is a cutie anon.
>>8041068
congrats on having finished. i love the way you've drawn her hair, and the few instances of line weight variation give the piece a lot of life. her hands are beautiful as well, but the hand holding the peace sign is slightly strange. don't lose steam on her lower body. add some curvature. i like her and i like you

So I realized that if I'm ever going to get my Loomis/hide heads correct, I need to just do these things over and over, piece by piece, until I can do every piece correctly.
The ONLY goal of this exercise was to pick a random point on the sphere and draw a) the ellipse around the sphere that passes through that point, b) the perpendicular axis that runs through the center of the sphere (the red line), and c) the line that marks where one side of the sphere will be cut off. Even with just these few pieces, there are already a bunch of things to watch out for, such as:
* The ellipse that runs along the surface of the sphere and divides it in half is not perfectly symmetrical, the "back" side of it will be smaller due to perspective. I've basically never seen anyone indicate this in their drawings ever and never even realized that perspective would have such noticeable effects at such small distances until I looked at a transparent 3D model in Blender. But, it's still something that you need to account for if you want to be fully accurate, because the size of the ellipse will affect the placement of the center point of any other line running through the sphere, which will affect how you ultimately cut off the sides of the sphere, which will affect how big the head is as a whole, and so on and so forth, it all just snowballs.
* Probably the biggest remaining hurdle is estimating the degree of convergence when you draw the line that marks where you'll cut off the side of the sphere. Yes even at such small distances the perspective is very noticeable. I don't think there's any other way to do it other than to do many examples and build intuition for it.
Over a few dozen tries I've gotten to about a 50/50 success rate of getting it all "close enough", these examples I did aren't all perfect but they're "close enough". Next I'll move on to actually drawing the ellipses to cut off the sides of the sphere.
>>
>>8041308
it's pointless to get that autistic about the ellipses, since any amount of error gets overshadowed by the fact that the skull is not a sphere
there's zero reason to worry about slight inaccuracies when the general abstraction contains much bigger ones
>>
>>8041313
Yeah, I want to look at hide's examples from his head drawing course again and understand why they look fine in spite of the perspective inaccuracies.
All I know is that if I have any slight inaccuracies anywhere in my drawings then it all falls to shit and looks prebeg, so I better be fucking accurate. I wish I had the magic that lets you ignore perspective and still have everything look good, but I don't.
>>
>>8041308
jfc dude
>>
>>8041322
I've been /beg/ for 8 years, I've tried "just drawing" and copying references and "having fun" and none of it worked, I'm tired of being complete dogshit. If this is what it takes for me to learn how to draw then great, I'll take anything that works at this point. Whatever it takes to be able to draw the head from any angle from imagination.
This exercise has improved my ability to find perpendicular and parallel lines in 3D space. Great. That's a win. One step at a time.
>>
>>8041308
also, to better complete the exercise you could mark both sides to be cut, and the axis that indicates the top of the skull
that way you'll get the full orientation of the head, with the front, right and top orthogonal axes, and be aware how symmetry changes in each orientation
>>
>>8041328
>also, to better complete the exercise you could mark both sides to be cut, and the axis that indicates the top of the skull
Yep those are the next steps, that'll be my next progress report. I noticed that I couldn't even get ONE of the sides marked off properly so I just wanted to start there first

Ad maiorem Dei gloriam. Soli Deo gloria. Everything for the glory of God.
Let God motivate you and guide you, inspire you with the Holy Ghost. If He wants you to give Him glory with art, He shall let you if you trust Him.

I had been having trouble learning how to draw. I used the fact I had only pen and paper as excuse, and told myself that if I had a tablet it would be much easier. The day I went to buy a secondhand tablet, right before I was going to buy it, a thunder crashed right above our heads and a massive storm began.
"Prove to me your determination; make something worthy, something great, something glorious, so that the act and the travail were not in vain. I could have drowned you and your trinket, but I let you have it, so you could give glory to me and yourself; do not waste this chance I gave you.
I cleanse you and bless you with this baptism."
If I had to wade through torrents of pure water from heaven mixed with tons of shit from the flooded sewers as the winds pushed me forward from behind, why will I not march on through all the shit of learning to draw as motivation rains down on me from God while the Holy Ghost comforts me and gently pushes me forward? I do not want to betray their expectations, I wish not to fail them. Jesus, God the Father, help me.

>>
>>8041536
I think those are just the contours of the abdomen / belly pouch. The iliac crests are the protrusions at the edges of the torso that make a sharp angle at the sides of the body.
You can feel your iliac crests if you run your hand around the edges of your front torso (if you're not too fat).
Also I think your femur heads (trochanters) should be a bit lower.

end every artist tneds to draw them differently, put the crest at different heights which makes construction guesswork. sometimes the hips go as high as the navel, sometimes they're much lower. wtf is going on

do more master copies and you won't even have to agonize yourself over the theories of form, perspective, and anatomy. Sure, those concepts are helpful, but the most fundamental way all humans from all epochs have learned to draw was by copying shit they liked. The 2d graphic design of anything you draw is wayy more important than the theory behind how you constructed it

This was done without any refs at all and i was worried when i just 'indulged' in copying stuff that i'm not actually learning anything new, just copying the lines and relying on 'muscle' memory to do it again later.

draftsmanship has improved, but the visual language feels stagnant. Im having a hard time reading the character. I'd suggest skimming through the https://www.youtube.com/user/PhilsDesignCorner channel, there are tons of videos with useful information on character design. The symmetry tool is incredibly useful for this too

>>8042331
I liked the original better, to me, this pose/composition reads weird and looks like one of those amateurish egirl cosplay packs. other than that it looks good.

>>8042314
the face feels small for the body. you draw, paint, and figure well, so I think if you spend more time thinking about the aesthetics of drawing, you’ll figure out how to solve the problems you encounter while drawing. steve huston has a great lecture about aesthetics and philosophy thats worth watching.

As for the tail, I like it when the base of the tail is wide. That makes it feel like an actual part of the pelvis, not necessarily coming directly from the tailbone, but at least flowing with the spine and pelvis. Also, the overlaps can block the viewer’s sight depending on which volume overlaps which.

This. When I was in college there was a guy who would spend every single free moment drawing furries and sometimes even during lecture. In front of everyone without stopping and without shame no matter what others said, and sometimes he shoved the drawings on people's faces to ask for their opinions.
I thought it was weird, but I bet he's raking in the money selling furry art to wealthy furfags.

Eh, fair enough. These are mostly for DnD campaigns, so they're usually paired with a text description covering what the drawing doesn't show. Not really an excuse, but it kinda explains why I draw stuff like this, definitely something I need to work on. I think I have other drawings that are a lot more readable, though.

I always thought that the process of art takes two things.
>information
>coordination
So long as you break things down into digestible chunks by asking "why" and "how" a lot, you can maybe manage to learn how to draw anything. But the process of making that information stick in your mind is a bit painful, and tends to infringe upon your emotional stability. Which is why the best artists out there do crazed shit like DFE and cut their ear off to mail to their friend or something.

I'm probably full of shit, but this delusion is all I have left to keep me from roping.

No worries, but I think drawings are a way to avoid over exposition in storytelling, even more so in role playing games. If I look at a character, I want to quickly understand them. For example, I don't see a necromancer in that character. To me, she looks more like a Chinese vampire. This is why tropes exist, some people think they are dull, but they are tropes because they work.

The image is just an exploration of my own. I do like the idea of the candle being part of her hair, though.

I didn’t even notice the mouth. It blended too much with the hair highlights to be noticeable.

This is fun! There are some tropes you can use to make the parasitic relationship clearer. For example, you could use a gradient starting at the top of the forehead, making the features look less defined. That could imply a lack of personality, like an empty husk, but it could also give a sense of dread. You could apply the same idea to the eyes.
You could also use the same mouth expression for both characters to hint at the puppeteer mechanic.

Another thing you could do is think about the “why.” It doesn’t have to be anything too deep, but I think it can help you establish the scene and figure out what you want to communicate.
At the end of the day, there’s no ultimate best answer. It all depends on where you want to take it and what you want to communicate.

Keep posting! I want to see where you take it :)

Could someone help me break this character down into more understandable shapes so i could draw it better from different angles and using human references for the poses? Tried asking /fag/ but those guys werent of any help.

Here's the copies I was doing earlier, how should I approach copying an artist's work in the future to better understand _how_ they construct something? Clearly I haven't been able to do that as my own work falls very short of these.

You should also keep in mind the things the artists do to hide or ameliorate their mistakes.
For example, I tried copying this fanart of Fubuki a few days ago here >>8041909. As you can see, and as another anon pointed out, I drew the shoulders and upper body higher than the original illustration.
However, notice how the back of the original has some sort of leaf on it between the ass and the back? The reason is to hide the fact that the artist made the back too long. I had to draw the upper body higher because if I didn't, the proportions look horrible.

Okay I’ll use my own work as an example. The writing I did in the back isn’t cursive because cursiveness implies formality, something official, something serious- fancy, like you said. Though the document i took from is in cursive I didn’t put it that way in my work to make it almost look like a slave wrote it. You need to just ask yourself what purpose the handwriting is serving in the artwork and decide from there
>>
>>8043709
And as for you handwriting that just takes practice. What language is this?
>>
>>8043022

How do you capture proportions when doing gesture drawings? Is it better do just do very quick and rough gestures (like, 10-30 seconds) and then trying to pin down proportions afterwards or are you doing both at the same time?
>>
>>8043720
>>8043723
You misunderstand my problem. The text is from the story I am depicting (https://esl-bits.eu/ESL.English.Listening.Short.Stories/Etgar.Keret/06/default.html), but I'm not a native hebrew speaker, and from what I heard, cursive implies informality, and I'm too anxious about misspelling in Hebrew and making it unreadable, so I couldn't make it look nice, I'm asking help from someone who can give me confidence or help if I'm unintentionally making a letter strange.

Well, I wind up paralyzed and spiraling out of fear of "bad practice", since lots of different people present lots of different ways as the only way to learn drawing, and all others as "bad practice". Copying refs is bad practice, tracing is bad practice, anime is bad practice, drawing in non-anatomically correct styles is bad practice, so on and so forth. It makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong if I'm not copying greek statues or something, it's hard to even doodle without feeling like I'm degrading my skills. I understand it's not logical, that's why I'm asking how to stop feeling that way instead of a million sub-hows that wouldn't solve anything.

I think your main issue is simplifying. You’re jumping into detail too quickly and your lines aren’t confident. When drawing figures try to use simple shapes and forms for the major parts of the body and bone movements and then build atop that. An awkward pose is easier to spot when it looks like a skeleton and it’s easier to build muscles atop of skeletons even if lightly.

I appreciate the response. To be honest with you, anon, you're making no sense. You say the issue is "simplifying" but suggest "use simple shapes", so I have to simplify even further in order to stop simplifying? Kek.
You also didn't say which part is wrong. You just made vague statements implying something was wrong. And your gestures don't look much better than mine.
I can tell that in your left gesture, the pelvic bone is straight when it should be tilted, while the scapulas imply the arms are tilted but the ribcage is straight.

It's true that my lines aren't confident, though.

>>
>>8043875
And I think you’re missing the point of the drawing. It isn’t about which gesture looks better, it’s about how you should start a drawing. You’re not starting your drawings in a simple, easy to understand way. You’re drawing contours instead of shapes. Also, you proved my original point by pointing out the flaws in my drawing because like I said: the flaws are easier to spot when you start with a skeleton.

Once again, simplicity and PLANNING, especially if this is something you’ve never drawn before. You HAVE to master taking the subject and making it as simple to understanding as possible, even if you don’t know anything about the anatomy. You’re thinking too much as someone that already knows how to draw a Jellyfish. You have to take what information that is given to you and THEN transform it into the most simple, easy to remember concepts in art: shapes and forms. Use line weight, shape variation, and simple form shading to guide you.

TLDR; literally just plan and simplify

Your art is so good. I genuinely think you're someone who can actually make it, between the sex appeal and the character designs everything you draw is extremely interesting, which is the most important thing in art.

I know yours is a sketch but looking at your other works, things I personally would recommend working on is primarily line control, the sketchy feel with your art is good, but I'd suggest at least giving yourself consistent, confident strokes at least for the outline border of your characters. Other small things would be the hips, specifically the iliac spine and how the protrusion aligns with the connection of the legs, and the abdomen muscles.

>>8043992
Damn, thanks man. I really needed that confidence boost in terms of the subjects I draw. And yeah the iliac spine is totally messed up. One of those things I only notice after I step away from the drawing for a little bit. As for the line control I totally agree and it's been something that's been fucking me over ever since elementary school in the form of writing. I think I just have the habit of making marks without thinking first, which has been tough to give up. I'll need to try harder. Anyway, thanks again, means a lot coming from someone whose art really like.

getting good proportions down early is really important since they are the foundation to the drawing. try to capture both the gesture and the proportions at the same time. might be too hard if you're just starting. so focus your studies on gesture at first, then proportions, then gesture and proportions together. if anything goes wrong, analyze it and try to figure out what went wrong. try to fix it and apply it to the next one. redoing the same pose multiple times is good for practicing too.

This needs some serious rework. The shot is heavily distorted, so I wouldn’t worry too much about anatomy here. Instead, focus on making sure the main shapes read well and make sense in the direction of the motion. For example, the trapezoid formed by the joint between the arm and chest is very appealing to me.
I think visualizing what’s happening in profile would be useful for determining the angle of the chest and hips. This is the best I can come up with, and even then, people will probably have very different opinions about it.

My suggestion is to find a hentai pro shot in a similar position and study it. but excellent work this is hard!

>>8043750
I’m a believer that great results require time more than anything else, but I think you are working the paper too much, and you can no longer create more contrast effectively. I think you have flattened the paper fibers, and you won’t be able to push the contrast any further. The thumbnail is reading really badly.

Work on your contrast, and honestly evaluate whether you have to start over.

I understand your points about the contrast but I just need to finish this. And yeah a see how the thumbnail reads badly but it doesn’t matter at this point, and like I said, I just need to get it done.
>>
>>8044188
This comment is eye opening because it’s insane to me that you’d even float the idea of starting that over. People on here have a problem with aiming for perfectionism instead of just finishing their work and creating a lot of art- and that’s why y’all are stuck in beg right there.
>>
>>8044191
Dude, to be honest, being able to know when to start over and disregard your previous work is one of the biggest leaps you can make as a creator. If you tell me that, at the stage you’re at right now, you can still create more contrast, I’ll say keep going. But from that photo, it looks like the paper is overworked.
You’re not bad, but you lack mileage. I know you’ve done your best, and it shows!
>>
>>8044196
As a traditional artist, starting over is very rarely an option. It’s not about that particular piece, it’s about the principle of starting your work over. For the most part, starting over isn’t the best for you as an artist. As someone who has finished countless projects, starting over holds you back more than it puts you forward, because it stops you from moving on to the NEXT drawing, which is more important than the one you’re on.

I don’t see it as perfectionism. I see it as the medium in this piece being exhausted, and further work will yield diminishing results. The problem I see more often here is not spending enough time in the thumbnailing and sketching stages, which are lessons learned through mileage.

>>8044200
If progress can no longer be made with the current work, either starting over or moving on to the next one are both viable solutions, whether it’s art or a project where other people’s livelihoods depend on it. But that’s just my opinion. If the anon believes he can salvage it, I’ll be rooting for him.
>>
>>8044216
It is perfectionism. The goal should be to finish the piece; not worry about how the results look. You won’t get to the results if you don’t finish it.

>>8044216
Progress can be made by finishing the work. The piece can’t get any better if I stop working on it. It’s not about salvaging the piece, or even starting over and moving on in the middle- it’s about finishing what you started. That’s literally all I’m saying.

More slop. No idea how to draw children and landscapes or render. I think I started putting in color for the landscape too early, the lineart was still workable (even if it does look like stretched taffy). Definitely need to bring my daily draw hours back up again.

Are (You) more in the draw from imagination mindset?

>>8044222
Are (You) more in the drawing from reference to learn mindset?

sort of new, but wondering if opinions about iterating and perfectionism are related to drawing from imagination, and if drawing from reference learning is related to finishing each piece.

My clueless conjecture being that if you are trying to learn by drawing from reference it would make sense to finish each piece so you can better compare, etc, whereas if you mainly draw from imagination you'll sketch a lot of hopeless attempts that are better to abandon so you can get more iterations in. Not sure if these are related though.
>>
>>8044330
you're overthinking it
if you want to improve, you need to fix mistakes
either you fix them by starting over, or you run away and find new mistakes to fix
>>
>>8044342
I'm not really trying to figure out how to improve, I think I know how to, just trying to see if these two schools of thought are related or not, as I fall into one of the two camps myself.

>>

>that's retardation you just came up with
Maybe, that's why I asked...
Can I ask you? For a beginner, would you recommend tracing/trying to redraw a reference, or mainly drawing from imagination to learn.
if it's a mix, is it 50/50, or what should they spend the most time on.
Then when it comes to finishing pieces, would you say it's more important to get lot of attempts in, even if it means barely finishing anything, or is it more fruitful to see as many finished pieces through to the end as possible, even if you don't sketch as many attempts.
>>
>>8044356
>would you recommend tracing/trying to redraw a reference, or mainly drawing from imagination to learn.
80/20 if for job
25/75 if for fun
>>
>>8044356
when you're drawing from a ref, you have instant feedback if you overlay it
when you draw from imagination, you are recalling the things you know, which is important, but there's no objective feedback to check against
this is the split an experienced animator recommends
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRE9dOR6djQ
>>
just make a thread, fuck the collage
>>
>>8044359
>>8044362
I see. Interesting, the reference split is higher than I thought, but makes sense.
I also see a split in opinions about whether people should abandon something as a lesson learned and move on to something else, or try to finish stuff as much as possible even if it's flawed.
Is there any consensus there? Like try to maybe finish at least one complete drawing a day, finish every piece, or don't worry about color, shading and clean lines until you've got decent sketches you're happy with.
>>
>>8044371
it all depends on your tolerance for failure, once it becomes frustrating it's better to shelve it and work on something else
>Is there any consensus there?
again, it depends on your goals and free time
a finished illustration per week is a good goal to have, like the dude in >>8043029
>>
>>8044362
>when you draw from imagination, you are recalling the things you know

That's not true lmao
>>
>>8044374
isn't it epistemically true though. If you can draw things that you don't know, a person who was born blind would be able to draw a horse from imagination.
You kind of have to know what something is to imagine it, even if you make something new, like a sphere with 20 curved spines ending in triangles, you still have to know what a sphere, curve, spine and triangle is to draw it.
>>
>>8044382
exactly
'what you know' gets improved by looking at things and drawing them, the knowledge gets refined and more precise
it doesn't mean you don't get to play with that knowledge, like drawing a girl with a clam's head and giant tits, but it still stems from knowledge of things
>>
>>8044386
>but it still stems from knowledge of things
This is again, not true at all.
>>
>>8044374
It might not be true in a literal image space, but it isn't beamed from outer space, it is based on the knowledge and experience you possess. The process of using it probably has some emergent properties, but it is still an input-output model.
I'm kind of eeem of the "feedback" thing—it's kind of apples and oranges. And you can get feedback on your work by comparing it to a "good work" or real thing, it just would not be based on direct pixel comparison.
>>
>>8044374
Yes it is. Draw me a kangaroo if you have never seen one then and don't know what one looks like then
>>
>>8044374
People be just saying things
>>
>>8044388
>And you can get feedback on your work by comparing it to a "good work" or real thing
that's true, and why I qualified it with 'objective' feedback
it's also the reason naoki recommends having an artist to imitate when doing original stuff, it makes this type of feedback easier
>>
>>8044389
His argument is that you do not need to ever see a kangaroo reading a book in a chair to make an image of it. You still need to know what a kangaroo is for it to be a kangaroo.
>>
I'm not really an artist, but I tried to make an animation (unfinished).
Kinda demotivated, do you guys think this is worth pursuing?
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/C8JtZFWt4BQ
>>
>>8044389
A kangaroo is a thing that exists
>>
Not only I should have seen an animal you call a kangaroo but you can evaluate my success at drawing kangaroo only if know how it should look like.
But I can draw a four-tit blobarion in a chair despite neither you or me ever seen one
>>
>>8044395
there a few parts in the beginning you could edit out, they seem unnecessary to the plot
I'm sure you can either record yourself or get better voice lines from slop these days, the voices sound terrible and distract from the whole thing
>>
>>8044395
it's peak. as in, it's not something I expected when I clicked the link. how did you animate this. it looks like something from an in-game video editor
>>
I'm not sure my gestures / anatomy are getting better, but at least I'm getting faster.
At first it took me 5 hours to draw a simple figure, then it was 2 hours, and this time it was 1 hour.
https://files.catbox.moe/hw6esl.jpg
I tried making lines darker in the closer side, following anons' advice.
>>
>>8044403
It's just blender. Almost all the surfaces are emission lit which gives it a retro feel. Ty for the compliment
>>
>>8044404
By overlaying I realized the figure was surprisingly close to the model. The only thing I got wrong was the arms, though right leg should have been a bit further out.
>>
>>8044399
it's funny you used blobarion as example, since that's very obviously a mashup of two things you know: a blob and the common greek name/suffix -arion, usually found in fantasy settings, and the rest are still things you know (four tits, chair)
just shows how bound you are to the things you know
>>
>>8044404

finish up the hands and place the facial features before trying to render
draw bigger (or with a smaller brush) to have enough resolution for it
>>
>>8044407
I never disputed that it would always be experience-based, just not in a very strict, literal image sense. The name is deliberate so you could form your own mental image of the thing to get the idea across, having a word for it is link to reality. If I called it "Gnnn" it would be too abstract.
>>
>>8044413
I'm not trying to render. I'm just adding some shadows to add a sense of depth or 3D.
I was doing the Vilppu Drawing Manual course/book and always wondered why my figures looked like utter shit, not like the book's. Then came the chapter on shading and the Vilppu motherfucker goes "btw I've been using shading all this time, that's why your figures looked like shit and not like mine" (paraphrase).
That's why I added some shading.
>draw bigger (or with a smaller brush) to have enough resolution for it
My brush size is 4-10px, my canvas is 1920x1080, my screen is 1366x768. I don't want to be constantly zooming and panning around for every stroke.
I'm just doing basic figures here.
>>
>>8044422
I'm telling you to finish the drawing, then add shadows and whatever else you like
your drawing is not finished, humans have hands and faces
>>
>>8044431
And I'm telling you what I'm drawing is the gesture or figure itself, not the hands and faces. Putting hands and face on the model won't add any dimensionality to the gesture. It's unnecessary detail for the purpose of the drawing.
I'll still do it anyways (it will look like shit).

Happy now, fag? You need to understand that people cannot practice everything at once. When a beginner is learning gesture and figure, you cannot expect them to practice anatomically accurate hands and faces at the same time.
