Yes, they are thousands of dollars and gigantic and let me clarify, for a regular person who even happens to have a spare 500$ you can get an all in one and the quality of the scans will probably be ok. There's another manufacturer by the name of "mustek" or "plustek" and some people are lucky enough to get a working one, but afaik for the better part they are just fragile as hell or old and don't function anymore (I attempted to get a """working""" one on ebay and immediately had to send it right back)
You can stitch images easily just don't be a cheapskate you'll be fine.

So much of art is learned through observation. Because many techniques and things can't be put into words, they are purely visual. You have to feel it by looking at it and trying to mimic it.

The solid blacks don't have any secrets. Just study more inking values/shadows. Rendering in pen and ink by Arthur Guptill is great overall. The hard shadows are mostly where occlusion happens, or on terminators, and of course you can play with it for appeal/mood by emulating a strong contrast with local light sources. Tatsumaki has a black dress, so Murata often marks/draws where the highlights would be and then drops the big black (the gray shades is added digitally afterward), though he also has a tendency of just going for it without any marks. In general, I don't think there is anything special about them. Where it is really dark, just go full black instead of hatchings.

As somebody who is also on Amazon, it's great that printing costs are so cheap and that you can also buy author copies without any added markup. Just note that on pages that deal with a lot of black, their printers are more likely to have a single streak/line running vertically down the page versus something like Mixam which has never done that to me across over hundreds of prints. You get what you pay for (or in this case charge for I suppose), that's all.

Not Pristine anon, but when you put in the amount of pages the book is going to be, Amazon (Mixam does this too) automatically calculates what the proper spine dimensions are and can generate a template with the proper dimensions. Worst case scenario they give you the numbers and then you make a custom canvas with those dimensions to draw on top of. It's actually super easy to deal with once you're crossing that bridge.

I'm still a /beg/. I don't want to work professionally in the industry. I don't want to work under constant time constraints and under the breath of editors and publications skewing my perfect vision for a "safer" and more marketable story. I want to work at my own pace. I want to complete my entire story first, have every chapter made beforehand, and then release chapters weekly without having to worry if I will be able to get a chapter out in time or not. I do not want to learn Japanese and I do not want to socialize with anyone in-person. I will post chapters on my own website.

My goal? To have the story become so popular that it gets an animation adaptation, and an incredibly high quality one at that. I want people to discuss my story. I want people to speculate and theorize about all of its mysteries an intriguing aspects. I want people to make memes about my story. I want to see threads on /a/ about my story, glazing it or calling it slop. I want to see shitty YouTube reactions of my story or shitty video essays critiquing it and claiming that it's a flawed masterpiece that are way too long for their own good. I want people to make fan art of my characters. I want to see high effort cosplays of my characters. I want nice figures to be made of my characters. I want to see arcs of my story become movies in theaters and blow up on the internet for weeks.

Today, I will make the first step and start planning out my first story. There are 14 stories I want to tell, some short enough to fit into a single movie, others long enough to make long running shonen series' look minuscule. I will not focus on making the art good as the writing is more important. My stories will be digital only so I will not concern myself with proper physical formatting and which side of the page everything goes on. One day, a professional mangaka will see my story and be fond enough of it to want to bring the world's attention to it.

If ONE can do it, then so can I. I am going to make it.

You can have big tits because that's just the character, but adding erect nipples for no reason in such a scene that is supposed to evoke a rallying of an army, that's just like shitting in your own soup.
Also double shitting on its own story and characters because the character was raped and tortured by the goblins, so she should have nothing but unfiltered hate, contempt and disgust for them.
Sure, you can argue the hardened nipples are just a reaction to anger or an heighted emotional state, but in visual works it doesn't work like that.

Anybody have any tips on drawing good trees and foliage digitally? Every tutorial for nature is done with traditional pens and aren't very detailed, basically scribbles. My comic has heavy emphasis on nature for it's backgrounds.

How can I explain the fact that my catgirl's tail stays tucked in her clothes in certain scenes? I wanted her to do that because first it would be weird to have her tail out while wearing thermal/spacesuits and I also thought of making her specialized clothes with some outer sleeve for her tail, but that would look really ugly and uncool. I think most people will agree that, there is something very special about Otomo's speedlines. They have so much more weight and energy than most artist's speedlines.
I recently watched Naoki Urusawa's episode of Manben about Otomo, and in it, Urasawa is soo enthusiastic about the speedlines that Otomo draws, that he gets out a pen and paper and draws some in front of him, excitedly counting the pattern of lines. To express how profound an impact they had on him. I think Otomo is made somewhat uneasy by this but it's all in good fun and passion.

When it comes to nature and organic things, smattering the details here and there helps sell the organic feel, but the details aren't randomly scattered. They're concentrated around the edges of the observable areas to sell the form of a round trunk.
Less is more. More details don't make for a more pleasing drawing, it's about where they go. Black and white drawings especially demand attention to where those details belong in order to avoid cluttered pictures.

There's a peculiar character trait to manga artists, they are extremely private when it comes to the creation of their work. They're not private about their techniques... but rather the physical act of creating. They cannot dare to be seen when making their manga.

It's not because they're a fraud. I think it's because the very nature of creative work is an intensely vulnerable experience. To put your heart on the page, you must be totally comfortable, you must feel secure. Even in the artists Urasawa does manage to rope onto his show, he's forced to set up convoluted fixed cameras, in hopes that the artist, for a short moment, forgets they're there at all. There's no possibility to have a live camera man in the work studio to watch them work. They must be alone in their studio, hidden from all the world.

Even when they have assistants, the main artist is often still hidden from them, they pile up books and stationary around their desks to conceal themselves from the assistants. And in the case of Tezuka, he wasn't even in the same room as them.

Like I told the mehitable guy, it's just an example. You can stylize things in a myriad of ways but i'm just trying to show you how dividing up the details can give a good result. That collage is a great resource. When I was learning I copied Kaiji's backgrounds of all things.
Here's a few more examples from my work. In my experience, when you draw a tree you're usually not drawing a carbon copy of the same ones in every scene. Naturally when you end up having to think about backgrounds in general you'll likely end up making it conform to your needs.

How do you ink that?

Started storyboarding... Shit is hard. Like, I often struggle with what camera angles to use, what panels might be worth it, and so on. It is difficult to bring to life what I envision. And my story starts with a heavy environment scene, so I can't abuse much of the faces in the void.

I can't say it's easy at all. This chapter was drawn in 2022 and even since then my major bottleneck is having the patience to sit down and think through where lines ought to go, "thinking while you draw" and planning it out. I think most people get filtered right at making the lines adhere to the form. People notice when it looks good, so there's some direct pay off.

To me, this is an expression of ones deepest desires, their true unfiltered passions. The kind of person that puts their heart on the page does so without rationale or excuse. They simply express, and along with that come things that are sometimes strange, like fetishes.

I get it more accurate than not when I draft. Unless I'm working on a throwaway panel I ALWAYS do the background. I've tried drafting the storyboard fast and loose before as an experiment but I've learned I pay the price for it when it comes time to actually draw. Guys i'm watching David Finch's videos, i quite like his style. That's what i imagine when i hear superhero comics.
But then i wanted to check out something modern. Absolute Batman seems to be very popular.
I looked it up and the main artist is weird for a soperheros comic, he draws tumbler noses and overall his inking style is very digital. But it looks nothing like David Finch, but more like an lgbt-comic. Maybe it is, i only watched the pictures.
Then i saw on wiki the series has many other artists and like all of them are very indie, i would call them avant-garde or postmodern.
The covers look very different, the covers look more like David Finch. The comic itself is very weird. Not very ugly perse but very feminine.

Have you ever actually read this book? It's mostly a generic how-to-draw book with a shallow coating of superheroes. It's not a proper style guide for working at Marvel. It's just a cash grab. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger making a "how to be strong just like me!" video course, and it's him explaining the bare fundamentals of fitness rather than a deep dive into anything more substantial.

Studying Loomis, alongside general anatomy, and copying the comics you want to emulate is probably a much better course.

As for right now im figuring out the logic behind chiaroscuro shadows and how to feather them out to convey form. Which is hard to understand as i am familiar with the French Academic method which technically works very differently.
The crab asshole is recommending the meme childrens book just to troll me.
The style in the book is from the 50s, it’s completely out of fashion by now no one is drawing like that except maybe for boomer bait.

Of course you have to start somewhere. But drawing high level Marvel style is not a start, it's an end. You won't be able to draw like that for atleast 5-10 years. If your "how to draw like Marvel" book has you learning one point perspective, it's safe to say that it's not going to teach you to draw like Marvel

Getting 0 attention on something is like being in a pit. There are countless hundreds of thousands, millions of people with 0 attention, in that pit, you have no exposure. It doesn't matter how good your comic is, you are in a sea of noise, nobody is looking at you.
However, if you can step even the slightest amount out of that pit, you immediately become the top 0.01%. Having 10 likes on something makes you top 0.01%. And the journey from there upwards is a million times easier than being in that pit.
Focus on getting out of that pit. And making your posts more interesting isn't the way to do that, becuase nobody is looking at them. Get people to look at your posts first.

I'm trying to get the logic right. Hard for me to draw such stylized shadows as i never do it this way. In Academic art the shadows get always bounce light. You focus on the termenator not on the solid shapes of the shadow.

Batman is not mine. But the logic behind such rendering is more clear to me, but it looks good in pencil, i don't know if you can properly ink it.

I learned to describe soft forms, pic related is me trying to use mora visible hatching, normally i would draw even softer, with softer gradients.
I have a hard time to comprehend abstract black shapes for shadows.
I was in an art store, i bought some very thin fine liners, 0.05-0.03mm. They skip quite a lot. I thought maybe i can use them to simulate softer pencil shading. But it's still ink and can be scanned and cleaned up afterwords.

I tried, for years, actually. I did world building for a shonen over many years.
But lately i gave up on the manga art style. It's just too abstract, my brain don't get abstract shapes.
I watch anime since im a child, but till today the style never felt natural to draw.
I thought American style is much closer too reality, but it's still too abstract. I don't know, maybe im just retarded.

This is why you're failing to get it. Because there is no manga art style. It's stylization to be sure, but it's not a replacement of realism. When you draw an anime eye, you're not throwing out your knowledge of real eyes to draw some cartoony shapes of an eye. The anime eye is still an eye, it is just as real but it is viewed through the lens of stylization.
It's supra-realism, as opposed to not-realism.
Draw an eye, or anything else, a real one, but stylishy, not cartoonishly, stylishy.

Nah, for faces it's all the same. Some styles have pretty realistic bodys, though.
The fundamental problem is that layer of abstraction that lays over the whole thing. The face is a shape, the nose is a shape, the eye is a shape. There is no physical connection between them. The nose is placed in a white space, the size, the angle, the form all of that is just an abstraction. And i guess for some people it's freedom, but not for me.
If you draw a face in an Academic style, everything is connected. it can look sketchy and stylized, but its like a puzzle. The cheek turns, than a fold, then the nose, than the other cheek, everything is connected, the angels the lighting. I get that. If i place my nose wrong, i can see that.
Like if the nose and the lips are too far apart the philtrum looks weird. So i can move the nose, or the lips to make it look right. Ir if i want the face to look weird i can make it even longer.
But in anime and other abstract styles. You have the shape of the face and its in most cases just white. There is no representation of the form of the cheek, there is often no philtrum at all, no upper lip, no under lip, just the slit between the lips. And you have to place it relying on your asian jeens, or talent, or i don't fucking know.
it's random, sometimes i place the slit and it looks okey, most of the times it does not. I have no idea why.
It feels like I'm playing a slot machine.

It's not a shape! It's a nose! Look at them, look closer! This is the part that westerners miss all the time. It's not a cartoon, it's not a replacement of realism. It's totally realistic... just drawn with the lens of a style.
If you think of it as just a cartoonish shape, you'll never pull it off. You have to draw it as though it's real... but viewed through a lens that stylizes things.

I can't, it really feels like wasting my time.
I thought i can get the style, but it's just like another language, i'm to old to learn properly.
A white statue is what my brain craves, just form, nothing else, no abstract bullshit, not even hatching. Just light photones hitting the surface of the stone and reflecting back onto my retina.
Maybe i should draw a manga about Greek statues, i will never understand your picture.

Oh, it's you Plemin anon. I personally like your comics and think they're cute but the artistic skill shown in your comics doesn't do anything to make people think netter of it. Everything is depicted very two dimensionally (heh), there isnt much in the way of interesting poses or camera angles, etc. It looks like a perfect carbon copy of every single deviantart baby's first comic and thus nobody gives it a chance.
Additionally, some of the plot progression is a bit hard to follow for some of the comics, or what DOES happen seems to literally be "and then something completely random happened, isn't that wild?!?!"
Despite all this, again I can't help but like your comic a bit as it's full of SOVL, but if I were to analyze it dispassionately these are my immediate hard stops that I believe prevent your comic from getting more traction.
