Not looking for a redraw but advice on how to improve my figure drawings.
I've been drawing from photos and doing gestures/silhouettes everyday this year and I'm still no better than I was last year.

You also failed to read the fucking post next to the map about the artists I WANT to emulate, you illiterate retard. I literally said things like mechs and furries aren't things I necessarily want to draw, but those just happened to be SOME of the artists that inspired me.

Jesus I literally typed a list of artists I specifically wanted my art to look like but you keep bringing up that influence map and ignoring the posts that explained it.

I gave you this same advice like a year ago, but I'll say again.
You have so many bad habits it would take me a while to point out everything, so I'll tell you what to do instead. Stop trying to stylize the figure and try to copy more accurately when doing it from photos. Make sure to get the proportions right because yours are extremely inconsistent. Only then you can begin thinking about the forms.
Use a different pen, one that you struggle with, to force your brain to switch its mindset. Oh, and if you've ever head about line economy and you're trying to follow it, just completely forget about it until you've improved because it's not doing you good.

>>
>>8028272
Redlines help your understand and solve problems that are specific/grounded, which is good if you're not a beg. Begs have problems with basic, broader concepts, and redlines are not going to help them very much in that case.
>>
>>8028281
I completely agree, which is the biggest issue with /asg/ because 95% of the posters there are beginners who cannot utilize a proper redline.
>>
>>8028281
It is probably equally helpful/unhelpful, as long as you can comprehend the change. For example, a person who draws like this [ ] will look at something like this [ ] as just a better drawing. But if you just move the eyes a bit lower, that is a change they can comprehend. Similarly, the person who painted the girl can see the different colors and change what they pick if they agree it looks better. But if you go full Sargent on them, they will just get sad.
>>
>>8028281
redlines do not help, its like math the answer sheet doesn't help you understand the problem.

This guy did redlines on /ic/ not sure when.
https://exhentai.org/g/2788523/a46c011e85/
>>
Here's the thing about redlines: it's almost impossible to know how helpful they are, because the person asking rarely follows up with applying the advice given to them. They either realize how much work is ahead of them and abandon the piece in favor of a new one; or if the redline is particularly detailed and well drawn, they just use that as a basis instead of doing the work themselves. It's probably better to keep redlines as basic as possible to illustrate concepts.
>>
>>8028705
It's possible to know they weren't helpful when the begtard that got the redline makes the same mistake again. It happens way too often.
>>
>>8028479
>if you think redlines and studies are the same, you are truly helpless.
Says the baddraw
>>
>>8028705
Redlines are a goyslop concept to begin with.

There are corrections like some Japanese channels do, where they completely repaint/redraw the thing to actually fix its issues and make it look better as a finished piece while making it biased to their own style.
Then there are anime pipeline style corrections where you redraw the lineart on a separate layer in the exact style the anon was trying to attempt.

Redlines are just low effort slop where it always looks badly made but that's excused cause it's le educational or something. You should be posting pngs of your corrections on a new layer and make them actually high quality finished art level lines so that anons can learn, but obviously this is too high effort for the redlinoors farming /ic/ cred, it's much easier to slop some vague lines onto the page to illustrate "concepts" instead of actually making artistic corrections.

>It's probably better to keep redlines as basic as possible to illustrate concepts.
Those aren't "redlines", that's edutainment /ic/ street cred farming stuff.

>if the redline is particularly detailed and well drawn, they just use that as a basis
which is how the animation pipeline works, and results in junior animators growing in skill from each correction
>>
>>8028745
This is probably true. But what's DEFINITELY true is 90% of people posting for crit don't know what the problem is they're asking about.

>You should be posting pngs of your corrections on a new layer and make them actually high quality finished art level lines so that anons can learn

Half these anon's know fuck all about style, how do you expect a red liner redoing the art in their style to help them anymore than trying to demonstrate the real problem in simple terms?

The solution is that either dumbass anons think critically, read the sticky and realise their problem is fundamental, OR red liners carry on posting "unhelpful" help to jerk themselves off at how good they are and how bad anon is (this is rarely the case btw, most of the time they just wanna help or warm up or some shit).

Which do you think is more conducive to progress here?
>>
>>8028756
> But what's DEFINITELY true is 90% of people posting for crit don't know what the problem is they're asking about.
Yeah I was mostly dunking on the redliners, but the beginners and people asking for corrections themselves need to be more based too.

> how do you expect a red liner redoing the art in their style
The issue is that if it's an actually good high effort style that anon is attempting (which granted is almost never so on /ic/) the redlooner himself cannot draw in it so they make it look like slop (biased towards their style) but excuse that with it being educational or something.

I have posted traces of pro Japanese works in these threads before and redlooners lack any discernment at all to see that it's a piece way beyond their skill level. They post sloppy lines drawn over it to show how "it's supposed to be done" without getting close to the quality of the lines I traced at all. Idk why they think this is acceptable at all, if you can't draw better than the person you're correcting even at the most obvious level you should not be farming /ic/ street cred by showing "concepts".

Ok but in this image the guy putting up perspective lines on a pose where limbs are bent at different angles is the true retard

the arms are in a different angle from the torso and it makes it look like her right arm is a lot longer than her left's, also one hand should be tucked in if she is crossing her arms unless it was done on purpose, looks silly tho.
the chin shouldn't be that tucked in, it looks like the angle of the head it's pointing down a bit but the cheeckbone should be lower if we follow that angle, the eye in the left shoul be less visible too.
the hat could have better wrinkles and form, but that could depend on the stylization you are going for, since her boots and clothes follow some realistic drappery the flat shape of the top hat looks off in contrast imo.

im sure there are books about this but imo you just need to know how to draw forms and learn some basic stuff about drappery.

Learn how to draw forms is key, you are not gonna eyeball drappery you need to know how clothes deform accordingly around forms/mases, this can vary drastically depending on the material of clothing, tension/physics etc... this seems like a lot but it's actually easy to learn.
Once you have the basics down, you can worry more about ehhh the nuanced stuff like line choices, types of hatching that depict forms without fulling outlining it, stylization etc....

Also sorry i haven't watched Rezero in forever i would never deflate some honkers ever!

i will argue against using real life stuff for learning drappery because it's extremely hard to deconstruct and line picking when you are beg, if you already have your forms and basic shit down maybe, but most real life stuff it's too adv tier to studie from. unironically studying from drawings is the best option as long as it's well drawn

I don't usually do redlines but here's one anyway.
I think you did pretty well! There isn't much to criticise.
First, I changed the position of the head because in the current position, regarding foreshortening, the neck is pretty long. (Unfortunately I didn't indicate it in red but you see it when you look closely).
You may also emphasize the deltoid muscles more to give it more 3D structure.
Lastly, and I think it's the most important thing, you need to pay attention to the breasts. In your current drawing, they are unaffected by gravity. She is upside down, so they should sag accordingly.
I've made an attempt to illustrate it but you should experiment with it to get it right. Reference material is just a Bing search away.
Personally, I always draw the pectoral muscles first. Then I draw the breasts on top of it.
But once again, you did a great job with this drawing. With the hands especially. I'd love to see it finished.

avoid amking the parts of the cloth exposed to light saturated, if you do that you need to commit to a lot of artistic shit to make the whole thing look cohesive

hello sirs
so I'm trying to "study" a drawing, like, attempting deconstruct it and try drawing it myself. next thing I realize that I can't visualize overlaps and forshortenings, it always becomes a mess. need help with the left shoulder (can't pinpoint the anatomy when you twist the arm like that) and the torso. what lines do you put down to make a top down view of the torso appealing? what is happening in the ref. what is "studying". what is "drawing"
>>8034492
is your goal do draw photorealistic cars or lightning mcqueen cars. the cars you'be drawn look believable as 3d objects already. is it just the technical design?

Heres my attempt on fixing the car:
Im not sure what models you’re referencing nor i have experienced drawing cars i just fixed the proportion i find odd i think it looks like what your typical salary man Toyota’s than a sport car the seats are shoddily drawn so are the windows thats probably why it seem like childish scribble

I suck a redline but thought Id try. Correct me if im making a mistake. Also sorry, your character's gesture might be wrongly represented.

Proportions are a problem, but your perspective is fucky. I wonder if you just winged these vanishing points. Either way, you should study it a bit more, specifically learning patterns of what happens to a box when it's placed in space under different viewpoints (centred, more left or more right - above or below the horizon).

Cute character.

Nice stylization. Great use of shapes. Digging the linework but could use more consistency when hatching. My advice would be to cel shade but you do you. Only things that bug me other than what previous anon mentioned are the somewhat unnatural pose and proportions and simple perspective errors.

Probably a lot of mistakes in mine, I kinda just turned this into an anatomy session for myself. However, I try not to mention anatomy because there's no point - but you do need to study it more.

Main problems:
1. Weird proportions, possibly stylistic, I doubt it though. I tried to keep it as close as possible, but the anatomy is more carved than you're style. The head is a little too small on him. I gave a rough indication of what size I would find a bit more appealing, but up to you - similar thing with the hands. His right arm (the raised one) is too short, probably because you're fighting for space at the edge - just enlarge the canvas and crop it later.

2. You're either missing the torso midline or trying to twist the upper body for that male stripper pose, not sure. Look at the midline running from sternum to between the abs, your haphazard drawing of details draws attention to the messed up horizontal alignments with the abs and pecs. The way you've drawn it makes the abs look 3 dimensional, but the chest/pecs look completely deflated - but this is partly because of your faulty chest anatomy. Draw a midline for the torso and try to keep things either symmetrical or horizontally aligned and it'll look better.

3. Just for drawing in general, keep outer lineweight thicker than the inner lines and details. It'll make your lines look nicer. Also, looking at the white shirt fabric, use less lines for details, it makes it look like you don't know what you're doing..

Overall, im shocked how good the hands are given all the other issues, better than mine generally turn out. Nice.

incredible critique, tysm

it looks like I don't know what i'm doing becausee I DON'T lol, i'm horrible with clothing folds and whatnot.

and apparently i'm also horrible with anatomy x.x

the mid-section is wonky because i initially had him positioned leaning forward and tilted quite a bit to the side. i shoulda probably just redrawn the whole body rather than try to re-shape it...

this redline is tremendously helpful tho! i think... i can understand the chest problem i've been having for a long while! like i genuinely felt one of my synapses connect, it's incredible

believe it or not, i'm still pretty unfamiliar with doing stuff like changing the canvas size. only had this tablet for almost 9 months lol, been a slow learning process.

>>8037780
I get you. It's really not too bad for 9 months, and its not the worst anatomy ever. Perhaps a little ambitious, but not bad.

My opinion is that you'd benefit from anatomy study, but put more emphasis on simplified forms rather than learning every single muscle. This way, you learn how to play about with bodies of different shapes and sizes. It seems you have some handle on anatomy, but more study on drawing consistent 3D shapes in perspective (like picrel) will bind together all the detailed anatomy you learn. Obviously learning origins and insertions of muscles and stuff is good, but just improving general proportions and alignments will make your work better and make learning anatomy easier.

Just so you know, I was referencing different illustrations in the Morpho book on Muscled Bodies. I recommend Morpho for understanding anatomy with that form in mind, like I mentioned.

Good Luck.

i've never heard of morpho, will look into it!
here's where i was a whole year ago - just pencil and paper and a dream

alot of my current trouble is coming from trying (and then giving up) more interesting/complex poses. this red one is a prime example, if i had just drawn it simple the anatomy wouldn't have ended up so fricked.

i gave up on the complex pose because i wanted to learn how to do fire and recolor my lines and add texture/noise and a BUNCH of other little things

Here Anon. I think probably the biggest thing for you to study right now for coloring would be ambient occlusion. You're using too much of it. It only goes in the darkest of places where light can't reach. It's muddying your values and creates too much contrast in an unpleasant way. Other notes: you extended the pelvis too much, you wouldn't see the other thigh's buttcheek from this angle, and I changed the leg pose for something that feels more natural and comfortable.
You can switch between your pic and this one to get a better feel for what else I changed. Honestly once I got rid of the occlusion issue, your values weren't bad. I color picked everything. :3
Also make sure you study hands a bit more! Just a little more work on your anatomy in general and you'll be golden!

I'm trying really hard to remember what happened. Either way people change their minds all the time. No harm in bringing positivity and encouragement to an art community.
Oh, correct me if I'm wrong. I think what happened was I made a new thread or something to continue that thread with my own redline as the OP? And Ort joined in or something. And for some reason everyone was upset with Orta because she just did a redraw for fun instead of doing it as a redline. It was a really strange moment. I think everyone was just being mega cringe because we were having fun drawing, which makes sense because you know, it's /ic/. No fun allowed.

You can make their stance wider for a more dynamic pose and I found the eyes hard to see in general, so I made them slightly bigger and added contrast to that area to make them stand out. I also made the iris small.
The only other issue I felt like could be addressed was the perspective with the arms and sword. I slightly tweaked these.

the replies you got are so weird and crabby.
Your figures are fine. There is no issue with them. But they're just mannequins. Draw actual paintings or at least sketches with emotion with them, applying what you know, and studying gesture for more dynamicity if you can't push it to the edge of motion, that's it
>>
>>8045765
if they were fine, he wouldn't be asking to be told how to improve them
there's nothing crabby about people pointing out what the consider ugly and how to fix it about the thing the guy literally asked for instructions how to improve
>but I think they're fine
nobody gives a shit what you think, he doesn't like them
>>
>>8045768
pff what a dumb opinion
he can keep "improving them" until he dies
my advice is as valid as theirs, besides the fact theirs won't improve anything. If you keep drawing figures and even gestures with no emotion or stakes in them you'll never improve past that anon's level. The only correct advice to him is: "you can draw confident mannequins, now draw something you're invested in". Then his copied poses won't be enough and he'll know exactly what to improve next, because his pinup won't be sexy enough for his taste, or his goblin won't be squat enough to convey how gross he wants him to be

I mostly try to replicate Jamie Hewlett's and Andrew Hussie's early comics.
The figure and motorcycle are meant to be simplified but exist in perspective, sorta like a 3D model of a cartoon.
The problem is that they both have super inconsistent vanishing points, and I wouldn't know where to place them when redrawing. Her posture is also weird. I can tweak the background myself.
