>Spend five hours drawing something>It looks like shit>Erase it
>>8033225>not getting a new piece of paper and drawing it again and again until it's not shitIt's like you don't want to git gud
>>8033225>>8033229this is the worst feeling but I’ve noticed whenever i go through this i always make my greatest gains. Hang in there anons WAGMI
>>8033229OP here. I do that
>>8033225Story of my fucking life>>8033229I’m convinced the #1 reason people stagnate in drawing is lack of verification. Especially for imagination drawings. It’s not clear where you’re supposed to find the verifiable gold standard of correctness for something you drew from imagination. But if you just take one reference object and draw it over and over, you can use that as your standard. When learning any skill, you need to know if your output was correct or not, and what specific mistakes you made if any. If you keep repeating the same exercise over and over and validating your output against an objective standard of truth then your brain WILL learn the skill eventually. But almost no one encourages this approach with drawing for whatever reason
>>8033225>Repeat
>>8033225Now do it again.
>maybe if I draw over it again I can fix it>still looks like ass
God, I miss having a teacher show up and just eviscerate my drawing when I fucked up. I took a course where I was taught by 2 people who were taught at the academy in St. Petersburg and they would just get rid of everything 6 hours in if you fucked it. I'd be stuck, going in circles endlessly until one of them showed up and erased the entire thing, and did some basic gesture before letting me get to it again. It was so liberating I love those guys so much.
>>8033225At least it was only five hours. Most of my drawing attempts take longer than that, and never even begin to start looking like the intended subject.>>8033229I can never think of anything to try doing differently. I don't really understand what I'm supposed to be trying to do in the first place, and I can't envision what a drawing of the subject would look like, so my efforts are almost completely aimless. When I reflect on what went wrong, I can only come up with extremely broad things like "I tried to draw without knowing how to draw" and "I do not have a functional process and cannot really even define the skill I'm trying to engage in.">>8033242Is there really even such a thing as an objective standard if you aren't just copying a drawing? The real world doesn't have lines, so you can't just transfer what you see to your page. You have to translate what you see to that medium, and it seems like that must introduce some ambiguity.
>>8035623Yes. It’s easy to do with 3D models for example. Open up Blender, spin the box around, trace over one of the faces to use as your starting point, try to draw the other faces blind. You either get it correct or you don’t. You can do something similar with any 3D model you have. Either your drawing corresponds to a possible view of the model or it doesn’t
>>8033225op, erase till you get something you like, keep doing trial and error till you come around to something that's "ok," get paper that erases easily. now the drawing will probably be messy as shit but if you pick the specific lines you like, it will be a finished sketch. think of it more like a clay figure that you are molding, "wrong" lines inform "right" lines, just like how you have to press multiple times when sculpting to get what you want. now that you have the finished sketch, you can transfer it to a new piece of paper, either through copying or tracing, both have advantages and disadvantages. art is mostly stubbornness and trial and error. good luck
>>8035774also forgot to mention, and this should go without saying, use references and steal from other artists. if you are just doing this from imagination then that's retarded
>>8033225>spend 30 minutes drawing something>it looks like shit>make a new thread for it on /ic/
Next time it'll take 4 then 3 etc. until you can crank out a good one in 5 then 4 then 3 etc.
>>8033225you still gained 5 hours of experience, even if you deleted it you learned a lot. What works, what doesnt work, etc. Next time you draw your drawing will be better.
