The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )

> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.

I remember a while back saying I'd gather what I think are still the most useful Mark Crilley videos in regards to manga/comic book making. Even though hes still probably remembered for his "How to Draw Basic Ass Anime Head" stuff that most people who post on here dont need, he is the only author I know that goes in depth and breakdown the moment to moment process of just drawing the bloody thing which some anons who are starting out might need or would just like to see someone elses approach and see the artist break it down in real time

I always see comments on here about "How do I go about drawing a page?" and as far as method goes this is pretty much how it goes. People on this board develop their own methods overtime but its nice to see someone doing it in real time to get a better grasp on how (You) can do it.

I was doing some studies recently I decided to draw a random panel from one of my scripts to see where I'm at while experimenting with screentones and bloom. It looks fine to me but I just wanted a second opinion because I tend to miss a lot stuff especially with my proportions looking wonky. Sometimes I really can't tell until someone points something out then it becomes obvious. I really appreciate the response!

You mean with a scanner? My scanner is very low budget anyway.
Watercolor is not as matte as you think it is, it's not gouache. After some build up of paint you get shiny spots as well. Not sure how a scanner would handle it.
Watercolor is the more rational choice, but i have much more experience with oil. If you know what to use, you can make it dry in 48h or less.
And if you have to use a rig to make photos, it be wet as well.
Anyway, i plan to do 2-4 pages, not a weekly manga.

I literally do watercolor for a living, it is 100% matte, you're using shitty paint with low pigment content, the shiny thing is gum arabic overwhelming the paper, which doesn't happen with non-shit paint unless you're retarded, that shit gets you chewed out because nobody's buying that.

>>
>>8048146
There aren't going to be any shiny spots unless you're using a nonabsorbent surface, using shit tier paint, painting with separated paint instead of mixing it back in or going full retard with glycerin based paint like Old Holland. Again, the binder is supposed to sit under the pigment, if it's visible ove the pigment (shine), your surface can't absorb it, there's too little pigment in the paint or you can't paint.

Have you ever worried that your story is far too predictable that your readers will see where the plot is heading from a mile away and lose interest almost immediately? How am I supposed to solve this without getting feedback from someone who has actually read it? I can't simply pretend to be an unbiased reader when, as the author I already know every twist and turn before it happens. It's a real dilemma. Maybe asking for advice here was the wrong place. I doubt any of you are genuine writing experts anyway. I would probably be better off asking on /lit/ instead.

I'm not sure I can really agree, it sounds too up-in-the-clouds to me. Too philosophical.
Anime almost always features cartoony characters beside realistic backgrounds, but it rarely stands out as odd.
I think what's actually happening is that your imagination fills in the blanks. You see the realistic background and then interpret the cartoony character as being realistic also, in feeling, not sight. And so even with a few lines, hair feels like hair, a shirt feels like fabric, etc.

And it would probably work the same way the other way around as well. A real life actor placed into a cartoony world, as the viewer you would begin imagining there to be texture, smell, sound, physical form to this cartoony realm, it would look the same, but it would feel more real.
>>
>>8048378
>texture
Most cosplay or netflix adaptations look like no one sees what the drawings are supposed to represent. There is never texture. So people tend to see anime literally.
>Anime almost always
Anime is always teamwork. Most pro manga as well.
But that is what i thought about. If you do it solo, you grind backgrounds all day long. You have a team, you draw some figures and go play Idolmaster while your art slaves do background rendering.
>>
>>8048383
>teamwork
The art in anime and manga is pretty heavily curated. There being a discrepency between figures and backgrounds is absolutely intended and not accidental.
Furthermore, there are many manga artists that do their own backgrounds and they look the same as if an assistant had done them.
>>

So many manga look so much better than it really is after getting scanned. I thought Planetes had the peakest art ever, but after looking at a cleaner, better quality version of the pages, I realized the art actually looks quite simple up close. Maybe not even that far from my own stuff, though I'm sure you'd all rape my ass up for even saying this. This makes it feel much less intimidating honestly.

I'm still a /beg/. I don't want to work professionally in the industry. I don't want to work under constant time constraints and under the breath of editors and publications skewing my perfect vision for a "safer" and more marketable story. I want to work at my own pace. I want to complete my entire story first, have every chapter made beforehand, and then release chapters weekly without having to worry if I will be able to get a chapter out in time or not. I do not want to learn Japanese and I do not want to socialize with anyone in-person. I will post chapters on my own website.

My goal? To have the story become so popular that it gets an animation adaptation, and an incredibly high quality one at that. I want people to discuss my story. I want people to speculate and theorize about all of its mysteries an intriguing aspects. I want people to make memes about my story. I want to see threads on /a/ about my story, glazing it or calling it slop. I want to see shitty YouTube reactions of my story or shitty video essays critiquing it and claiming that it's a flawed masterpiece that are way too long for their own good. I want people to make fan art of my characters. I want to see high effort cosplays of my characters. I want nice figures to be made of my characters. I want to see arcs of my story become movies in theaters and blow up on the internet for weeks.

Today, I will make the first step and start planning out my first story. There are 14 stories I want to tell, some short enough to fit into a single movie, others long enough to make long running shonen series' look minuscule. I will not focus on making the art good as the writing is more important. My stories will be digital only so I will not concern myself with proper physical formatting and which side of the page everything goes on. One day, a professional mangaka will see my story and be fond enough of it to want to bring the world's attention to it.

If ONE can do it, then so can I. I am going to make it.
>>
>>8048422
What you said about your goal feels so real and relatable lol. Good luck man
>>
>>8048411
Nah yeah you start noticing that a lot after a while. Unless youre doing illustration/graphics that use vector art where all the lines are literally calculated by a computer program the lines that I used to think were clean and crisp always have a little wobble to em or feathering even from the most pro artists there is. I appreciate the art just as much though if not moreso cause of that.

>too philosophical
It's not a matter of philosophy. Simple character = cute, easy to project onto and relate to. Detailed character = not cute, harder to project onto and relate to. Environments being highly detailed contrasts with a simplified character drawing to encourage the reader to relate to said character.
>>
>>8048268

Why is that? Like I know this comic you doing aint as polished as the Knight comic you were workin on but the art seems fine for what you going for. Like are you gonna redraw the panels with the guy? Cause I notice that at least this spread you got right here that despite different facial expressions you have goin on with the guy hes not given as many interesting angles or body movements, but its a hentai with the focus being the girl so its not that much of an issue.
Just wondering what the problem is that made you consider redrawing is all

I liked it, art has a long way to go but I was still able to follow it.

Dialogue was good, and the characters talking back and forth was the best part.

The scenes establishing areas and buildings were way too messy, you can't get away with this chickens crat, at least get rid of the hatching you use. Or make the hatching smaller. I have to decipher some panels showing ships and explosions. Its possible to clean this up and use fewer lines, then the energy blasts and exhausts can still have the sketchy hatching but be more precise.

A thinner brush and filling things in solid black would do a lot to clean up the action panels.
>>
>>8048176
that's not what watercolor looks like, you're doing something wrong
>>
>>8048590
and by long way to go I mean you need to focus on clarity over saving time. It looks like you can do a lot better than this but the decision to use messy hatching ruins the larger panels. When its just people talking its not so bad, it can even look cool. And the figures are not that poorly drawn anyways, you just need to not ruin the good art.

I am not the schizo, I just had a thought and wanted to share: what is the end agme with webtoons? They optimized the fuck out of them and made them pure dogshit and emotional bait for women, and they got the women hooked, but now what? Just keep milking foids forever? No red blooded man is ever reading a webtoon where nothing fucking happens AND the art is shit. Nobody is drawing fanart of korean guy #26326 traced over the anime boy csp model. Eventually the zoomers reading this slop will get bored and grow up, what then?

Webtoons are the modern equivalent of pulp magazines, cheap disposable entertainment following trends of the time. There's always enough authors who are fine pumping out anything for a quick buck and they'll just move on to whatever the next fad is

>>8048676
thats a good point, I guess was being too negative.

I wished I could write. Maybe I'm just not experienced in it enough but it seems to me that writing is way harder than drawing.

The difficult thing is the climax. I just don't understand how to come up with good climaxes. I kind of understand how a good climax looks like (inevitable and surprising at the same time) but I don't understand how to get there and how to come up with the ideas for it.

It seems to me that finding good story ideas is complete luck.
>>
>>8048661
I spent so long getting as good as I got. It's about time I started getting paid.
>>
>>8048690
My idea is to write super short stories (1-2 pages).

Here are my thoughts so far about how to write stories for this format:
>to write interesting 1 page stories it seems to be more effective to me when you go into absurdity with the story
>gag stories also seem to be most effective for such short stories

>to come up with a good climax it seems to me that you first have to create some context and then go into more detail by adding things which could fit into this context
>then you have to somehow create some spectacle (people dying for example) and a twist with these details

I do not really understand how to come up with these details tho. And hwoto create good climaxes with them. All I can do is just stealing from other stories I know and changing them a bit.

art on this level making it is a sign of a healthy market. there are so many readers that manga like this can slip through and ride the coattails of better stuff. We dont have that luxury. If you went back in time and took jojo's bizzare adventure (the first part with jonothan) and killed araki, and then came back to 2026 and posted it, nobody would read it.
>>
>>8048718
>if you went back in time and killed homer and posted the illid on /lit/ nobody would read it
>if you went back in time and killed charley chaplin and posted his movies on /tv/ nobody would watch them
yes, because those works and their success are a product of their time, retard, it has nothing to do with how healthy a market is
there are vastly more readers and viewers today and the industries are incomparably bigger, but those works don't appeal to them because their experiences and environment are radically different and don't resonate with those works

it always works
people look at pictures for the art, hence why the posts do well
people read comics for the story
the art gets them to check out the comic, they don't care about the plot, so they don't buy it
tired example, but look at OPM, nobody ever got at ted to the webcomic because they saw a picture of the art, it's always word of mouth
meanwhile, the manga was always shilled via art, gifs of how amazing the fight scenes look etc
same story (worse 2bh, but for the sake of argument), better art wins out by orders of magnitude
shitty stories will still get more attention with bette art but not much

ps. calling people goycattle for appreciating art is peak kike, everyone can see it's jealousy btw

What im trying to say is, if you are a good mangaka already, you have an eye for epic shots, for cool composition, dynamic poses, you have a feel for time and space in comic format.
And if you go down with just rendering, you produce cool, dynamic panels with little effort. The knowledge is passive, you don't have to think about it too much.
You get 80% of the effect from a full rendered manga by spending 20% of the usual time.
You could have 2 shows at the same time or a lot of free time.

How about.. The generic "high-school drama", but the students are pilots for fighting robots, organized by corporations competing for military contracts on space exploration and warfare. The pilots become mini-celebrities, and companies make merchandise from them and them robots, some even become music and movie stars. But still, they can die at any moment in the robot fights or get mangled and mutilated.
The higher arc of the story is when actual war breaks out, and they are used as proxies for corporate nations at war, and they have to fight and kill each other, not as a tournament fight between competing opponents, but as forced enemies at war. The end of the story, climax as the "pilots forced to be mortal enemies" join forces to turn on their military complex national corporate leaders to destroy them instead of humanity with their planned wars.
There you have it, it's yours. The story is full of tragic love and intense wild sex between life and death tho.. It has to have lots and lots of tragic intense sex and hopeless love relationships, that's my only condition..

Meme by boomers incapable of comprehending the generational gap, it was never real. Generally it takes a vested interest in the medium itself that goes beyond casual consumption to appreciate "timeless classics", and then it's more a historical interest than genuine enjoyment of the work for the most part.
IE you can find someone who will get some value from watching Citizen Kane, 12 Angry Men, Rebel Without a Cause or whatever, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone that enjoys movies but doesn't care about the technical aspects who will actually enjoy the films in their own right rather than as an exercise in media studies.

"Timeless classics" doesn't just refer to movies from 60 years ago. It refers to stories hundreds or even thousands of years old. There are certain things that are understood about the human condition regardless of generation and traditionally, people are able to connect with each other across time and generations because you should be able to understand the trials and triumphs of humanity through passing stories down.

"Timeless classic" doesn't mean "That one movie everyone really liked."

Problem is, in modern times people act like space aliens around one another, few people are able to connect with, let alone empathize with other human beings, so it isn't really shocking when self-centered, self-important people can't identify with the plights of other individuals.

That is, of course, assuming the person consuming such stories can even read the story or even comprehend what is trying to be explained in the first place. These days, you have to just assume everyone is a selfish idiot who thinks the Earth is flat and possibly thinks modern medicine is the devil's work.
>>
>>8049135
The context is manga, there's no such thing as thousands of years ago, and I made my case clear: it's a meme artificially propped up by old "authority figures" either way. How many people read Gilgamesh or Beowulf because "they like reading"? Practically no one, instead they read it because of tangential interests.
>hurr durr selfish dumb people
Peak retard, those works were written for people of a different era, expressing sentiments born of that era, no shit outsiders can't connect to it, same way boomers can't connect to younger generations' art. Every generation fails to connect to expressions of a bygone time and later turns its nose up at their grandchildren's creations because they lack the experience that gave birth to it.
Experiencing a centuries old work the way its contemporaries experienced it is something that takes decades of study to even approximate, we cannot even comprehend the mindset and understanding of the world of people who lived thousands of years ago. Beowulf is what, 1000 years old, and people who dedicated their life to understanding it still can't tell what some verses mean despite fully understanding the language, and other verses they're arguing about what the words even mean.
Thinking you can connect with a work "thousands of years old" is peak midwit delusion.
>>
>>8049135
>>8049161
Consider the Bible, probably the most studied book in history of mankind, we're still just discovering what the fuck they were talking about. Nobody knew what the fuck Isaiah was talking about with the star falling from heaven and an entire aspect of Christianity was made up to try and make it make sense, then thousands of years later somebody digs up some rocks and find out it was a reference to a forgotten Canaanite myth that contemporary readers would have understood to be mockery directed at a real person.

If I were you I wouldnt worry too much about it, unlike your Knight comic this one is more comedic and less serious in nature, and we are only gonna see these characters for this one-shot idea right? I would focus on making a few key drawings of the girl character as high quality and "on model" and the others can be more loose. Like maybe prioritize key drawings/panels that have her on model like the first few panels where she is introduced and the key sex scenes, otherwise be loose with it cause we are only gonna be with these characters for a short time (and when people are horny they can forgive the ""shittier"" drawings as long as you got a good one comin up next) so the pace at which the readers are gonna go through this one shot will be real quick.
Plus given its more comedic nature you dont wanna make everything "on model" cause comedic drawings work best when they can be more loose and expressive. Like not every drawing of the girl youve posted so far has been "on model" but at the same time she has energy and easily readable expressions. You dont wanna lose that to have technically better drawings
