It pisses me off how sometimes other artists get really catty or start throwing shade when you show them you work and then tell them you had to work hard to get there. Then you try to be humble and tell them that their work is good, and then they immediately start trying to imply that they're better than you because they don't study.

Your lack of follow through and commitment doesn't make you a better artist. It makes you lazy. I'd respect you so much more if you actually had the willpower to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You don't. Your shade and snark are proof that you yourself know you won't get to my level so you delude yourself into believing that if you tried you'd be better than me. Yeah, I agree, however, you won't try. Because most people don't. Most people seem to not understand, that the work is the hardest part, wait no, they do. That's exactly why they don't do it. So you keep not doing things, throwing shade, eventually you'll become a crab as time continues to slip past you. I'll keep studying. Growing slowly over time. In 10 years, I'll have crown to be an advanced artist, I know I will, you however, you can keep your talent. Its worthless with the work that I put in. You weak willed lazy bitch. Get out of my sight. You don't deserve my compliments if all you're going to do is throw shade back at me.
>>
Gen Z really seems to be obsessed with this. The obsession with being "effortlessly talented" is the most transparent defense mechanism in creative spaces, and it almost always stems from people who are terrified of confronting their actual limits. They cling to untested potential. They rather living in a fantasy than acknowledge reality and then push past those limits in spite of reality. Everyone could be a master if they felt like it, until they actually try. Lmao.
>>
Delicate, fragile ego. Pathetic little worm. You need to take a good long look in the mirror and confront your own insecurities them come back when you're ready to actually sit down and be humble. You lack substance. You lack follow through. You think that the best of the best got there by doing nothing? What kind of deluded world do you live in? This isn't an isekai anime, the only people that works for are nepo babies. You aren't one. Shut the fuck up and accept you're a lazy piece of shit is too terrified to realize their limits, or actually try for once in your pathetic life, recognize that you are HUMAN, imperfect, unskilled and LIMITED. Then be a HUMAN and PUSH past those limits anyways. You do that, then maybe I'll start respecting you again. Until then, your ego has become a stumbling block that I'm not interested in helping you get over.

How do I do lineart? It sounds stupid but I can't do it. Everything I do comes out so scratchy. I've tried different brushes and settings but the problem persists. Am I supposed to be doing long broad strokes? Am I supposed to be doing the shorter, almost frantic lines I do while sketching and then erasing the messy purposeless lines? When I line on paper with a pencil my lines look decent and there's varying amount of volume and thickness so I don't know why I'm struggling here.
Also I tried asking this a while back but got accused of being a namefag schizo. I don't know who that is but it's not me.

I really dislike those dog-ugly freaks that the thread challenge maker gives us.
Today I really noticed how much it affects my mood to draw something I don't like and I won't do it again any time soon.

They say people improve fastest when they draw what they enjoy. AT the same time thread challenges are a fun exercise, to draw something outside of your comfort zone and compare the approaches of others.
>>
>>8058815

by 'okay' i more meant 'am i developing slower than normal' vs 'am i getting where i need to be'. i know i'm a long, long way off from what i really desire
>>
>>8058717
>be humble
>maybe I'll start respecting you again
I think I'd rather be arrogant than a validation seeking cuck. I don't care about your respect, I'm not a gymbro or a mobster.
Gassing yourself up is fine, if anything it's good fuel for motivation, the only problem is when you don't really believe your own smoke, which can make you too scared to even try, It'd be better to be completely full of yourself. Are the people who do this annoying? Sure, but I dislike the humble liars more myself, those who say they don't study at all yet ace all tests. At least the lazy people who glide through on C's and B's, coping that they could get A's are easier to poke holes in and make fun of.
>"This isn't an isekai anime"

>then they immediately start trying to imply that they're better than you because they don't study.
>Your lack of follow through and commitment doesn't make you a better artist. It makes you lazy.

To be frank, I often find more raw talent in a 20-second exaggerated sketch than in a highly rendered, two-week atelier drawing. I do recognize them as the greater talent and they have the right to sneer at the sterile rendermonkeys. But I am biased because I strife to be a good fast sketcher.

Perhaps a compromise is to agree that there's different sorts of artists

>Yeah, I agree, however, you won't try. Because most people don't.
Because that's just not what everyone envisions as their ideal. Who are we to critique the soulful webcomic sketcher?

Also, pyw.

freezingtarou29. he/she can pretty much draw anything, i long for that
another artist who's good but not as good (my /beg/ opinion -- still way better than me, obviously) that i really admire is michiroon, because she's good at drawing interacting figures/tons of poses and her anatomy seems great

with a concrete goal is easier to make progress towards it
the first step is easy, stop using a pencil and use a pen without pen pressure, be economical with your lines

do you know you have to balance the background with the figure, no? i dont understand shit about what he is saying on below those two group of swatches but the meaning is clear, at least for me, if you have a saturated background you cant have a saturated foreground, and if you have a saturated foreground you cant have a saturated background. but its subjetive, of course you can do whatever you feel like but i will look just awful or not appealing. as a side note, it doesnt have to be a strong difference like in your image, i can be more subtle, and that i think would be a more advanced application of the concept...

I’m not a pro by any means either, but as long as you also practice drawing (esp. anatomy + general forms) in parallel, focusing on painting should be alright. I personally did both at the same time, and I found it motivating to do both in tandem, as it allowed me to produce ‘finished’ (albeit shitty) paintings early on.
You already have a decent grasp on values imo (at least when it comes to the face), but the forms could be sharper/less muddy (see, for instance, the shoulder); I would also consider experimenting more with hue-shifts from light to shadow, as this generally gives paintings more ‘atmospheric’ coherence.
Also, if you intend to go into painting in the long run, make sure to learn the difference between form shadow and cast shadow; this is what fucked me over in the beginning a lot

>>8059450
Yeah, I think this looks rough in part because the pose draws attention to the hands, and they look hastily scribbled in. Unless the woman is some sort of bodybuilder, the ribcage also seems a bit too large imo.
You also ‘chicken scratch’, which further contributes to this looking beginner-esque. Maybe try using fewer, longer strokes; in my experience doing so will give you a better understanding of form too, as you are forced to more consciously consider the shape of what you’re drawing.
>>
>>8059477
Thank you for the advice, i think the ribcage is probably too large, i will practice paint and blending on the male figure and post at some point

your ref is good for some things but not for value and paint i would say. for example, can you tell the direction of the light source? well, it might be easy if we take into account the waist back or the left gluteus. but can you tell the start of the shadow area? are you sure that isnt a mid-tone area? and dont point to me that between the forearm and the external oblique or the black spot at the crotch level under the gluteus because those two are ambient occlusion...

If it's your job, you push through. If it's a hobby, you rest and watch an art lecture or whatever.

>>8059424
If it's just a sculpture and you're not planning to rig or animate it, you could soften the digastric plane. The jaw shadow is too harsh, and it doesn't look pretty.

>>8059445
This is the right board.

>>8059161
It looks amateurish and naive. That's why it feels dead. The contrast in saturation is way too harsh, making the chromatic grays look lifeless. Great artists usually use chromatic grays in the shadows look interesting and when the light hits the subject, it looks more vivid.

Great observation, It's not an uncomfortable pose, but her right shoulder creates a horrible silhouette that makes the pose feel uncomfortable.

>>8059558
I'm pro 80s 90s era. The biggest differences I've noticed are in the lineart and shadow shapes, they are almost nonexistent now. If you check the remakes, you'll notice that the face often had shadows to help convey its 3D form. The same goes for the neck line. Now, the face planes are a solid color, and the neck is rendered in the shadow color.

Special mention to aspect ratios. Now you have too much space to fill. Previously, it was easier to fill the screen with characters and arrange them in a way that felt cozy. This isn't exclusive to animation, either. You can see the same thing in old TV shows and movies.

People are saying it's because it's also for /ints/ but all beginner drawing spaces online that aren't for /ints/ get buttfucked by humblebraggers too. Or I guess the kindest interpretation is they don't realize how good their art is due to low self-esteem. use your eyes negro
take one of your colors. from the skin for example, and paint a mark over the ref, then adjust your color without color picking, and repeat
>>
>>8059954
I noticed that Light's face is kind of glowing on the left but darkened on the right, so I just tried adding a white-black gradient on a new layer on top and it kind of worked.
I guess I could also have used an airbrush with white and then black?
>>
>>8059958
I'll try that next time.
What I was doing is color pick then fill, but because the colors looked too dark and dull, I used a color adjustment filter to make them brighter; then I used either grey or black on a new layer with low opacity for the shadows.
>>
>>8059961
forget about all that, first try to match the colors of the bg
due to color relativity, all your choices will feel off if they're not in the correct context

I'm not really sure if accuracy is a useful skill.
Photography and digitally solve that problem, one could just draw the lines and then fill (without tracing because that looks unnatural).

It doesn't really help drawing from imagination. I assume this is the goal.

If you could go back, would you recommend your former self to not try it?
I think I wouldn't. The thought may have occurred to me, though. The best defense for art is that other things are at least equally empty. There's a certain joy in art, being able to look back at done work from the past.

Focus on placement of shapes instead. I wouldn't worry too much about values or edges. Notice how the far eye is behind the arch of the nose? Your overall proportions are pretty good, just need to hone the smaller ones. The lips take up more space than you think. Once you get these shapes down, you can add some light and shadow values much easier.

I appreciate the sincerity. Let's compare.
First, you created your account 2-3 years earlier than him. 2023 was also still solid pandemic territory, and Twitter rules were more lax, so naturally you had a larger potential audience on those three points.
Second, you have 150 more posts than him. That also adds to your follow count.
Third, you might have been spamming your art or engaging with various communities, which increased your exposure, while maybe anon didn't.

That said, your art doesn't seem that much better than his in my view. The skills of both of you are pretty close.

You spend so long fantasizing about drawing throughout the day, and when the hour finally arrives... its all spent on not drawing. And even when you do draw, the little time you have is spent on bullshit.

Values are off and the appeal of the original is lost. Gained nothing
>>
>>8060902
That's an issue with ADHD processing. Thinking about drawing can release the same chemicals that are produced when you do actually draw, so if you think about a particular drawing enough, when you actually get to drawing it it feels like double the effort because you're virtually starting "from zero".
Thinking about a piece can be useful as background processing your steps and the overall look you want can benefit you when you do sit down to draw, but doing it too much will fool your brain into thinking you drew.
That make sense?

Good day,
I would like any critique you could give to my drawings please.
I do know that my anatomy is lacking, but really anything you could think of off would help.
Thank you in advance.
>>
>>8060902
Pretty true. I kind of realized this when I read Schopenhauer:
>For these [meditations on serious, and especially unpleasant, affairs], morning is the right time, as it is in general without exception for all efforts, mental as well as physical. For morning is the day’s youth: everything is cheerful, fresh, and light; we feel strong, and all our faculties are at our complete disposal. We should not shorten it by getting up late, nor should we waste it with unworthy activities or conversations; instead we should regard it as the quintessence of life and, in a way, consider it sacred. [] Each day is a little life: every waking and rising a little birth, every fresh morning a little youth, every going to rest and sleep a little death.
>Arthur Schopenhauer, Parerga and Paralipomena, Vol. 1, Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life, V, Counsels and Maxims, §13
I'll try to follow his advice.

I finished the lineart and added the base colors. It looks a lot better now.
Now comes the really hard part and where I fuck up horribly, which is shading and highlighting. I'm tempted just to leave it as is and move on.
>>
>>8060995
I think the bigger problem is the overall proportions and forms
you can simplify anatomy to basic shapes and still get a nice result, but if the overall proportions are off it's gonna look weird no matter how much anatomy you know
>>
>>8060131
any advice on what i should improve besides the anatomy?

It feels like you're raw-dogging it from the beginning. Usually, you'd do a mise en place and have a single source of truth for the front, side, back, and top views. The problem with 3D software is tuhat, without experience, it's difficult to spot these inconsistencies, which are much easier to catch when working traditionally. How are the top and back views looking?

In the first segment of the video, there's a useful trick with annotations. I think you can fix most of the issues just by correcting the proportions. Keep posting, this is cool, dude.

It does kinda well when I draw some famous character on pixiv considering the view/bookmark ratio, but 90% of time I do some obscure character that only a few knows. Twitter is a lost cause, it was growing steady but after the notification all the random people likes and follows stooped

the easiest would be to copy the proportions used by an artist you like
maybe something like the full body sketches from
https://e-hentai.org/g/2867448/9bf28a8ead/
the idea is to have a soild 'base' and build on top of that

>It feels like you're raw-dogging it from the beginning.
yeah kinda. This is actually a revision. The first version was entirely based on a single image of an anime style character, I tried to capture the anime look without going the usual route of a typical 3D anime model. I ended up splitting the baby and it ended up looking pretty odd.
With the revision I didn't want it to look like a human with big ears so I wasn't really using references. I'm kinda over that now, I just want her to be pretty.
https://files.catbox.moe/fg4ilm.obj
Just throw this in a model viewer and see all the angles.

pic rel is original ref. I guess the fat ears are the defining feature but I'd also like to capture her squarish jaw without making her to masculine looking

>With the revision I didn't want it to look like a human with big ears so I wasn't really using references
Those are the guidelines for the head. You need to know them before you start breaking the rules. They are your anchors when you don't know how to resolve something.

>I just want her to be pretty.
I would remove the nostrils, soften the philtrum, make the mouth smaller, and make the neck thinner.

> I'd also like to capture her squarish jaw without making her to masculine looking
To get that effect, you need to define the gonial angle as obtuse so the jaw doesn't look as thick and the curvature becomes softer.

but I think this is as far as I can help you. Next time, have at least frontal and side view references, and share your work in a quad view screenshot with front, side, back, and top views.

>>8061247

Cant portray motion for shit. Eroticism still not achieved. Still can't properly make figs from imagination, everything still looks 2d. I have noticed I got better at drawing hair, so thats a plus ig.
Used myself as a reference for the sideprofile(probably why theres such a disconnect between the neck and the rest of the body)and imagination for everything else. I've been practicing construction but I didn't even think abt using it, wtf is wrong with me

>>8060905

>>

>>
>>8061348
you just dont have enough information about when and why to use some techniques, ideas, concepts, etc. so if i say "stop drawing lines, draw the action", or "stop drawing contours, draw volume/mass", that might not make any sense to you because you might need more information to actually see why you must do these things, the problem is that although i can give you that information you might still not understand why or when to use it, and thats because they are simple words, you need to experience it, think about it. a good example would be Glenn Vilppu's videos where he shows and talks about feeling the form, even though he is showing you to the best of his ability what he means you might still not understand the point, the same for Mike Mattesi, Steve Huston, Michael Hampton, etc. and for all of them and me included there is something they cant teach you, and thats the real "meaning" they and i give to an idea, concept, technique, etc. because there are implicit aspects that they would never share or simply they are not even able to put into words. so in conclusion, words cannot communicate the full spectrum of what someone is trying to express. keep drawing, thats all i can say.
>>
>>8061172
but bro, thats simple plain anime style, search for some references on profile views of some manga/anime characters and lerp mentally and in your canvas (draw) between your picrel and the profile view, that way you are not relying on just memory, you are familiarizing with the model, with the common landmarks (points/areas that stay more or less consistent across different styles and refs), etc...

Heh. I forgot there was a term for that. My first attempt had even less details than that one. I'm still not great at filling things with details. And that's a very important skill if you're drawing certain subjects.
>>
>>8061472
neither did i, but it looks like an important term to keep in mind or as a sidenote. for example, my drawing (>>8061456) can benefit from it by increasing the amount of detail in the clothing, for the skin im yet to discover a way to correlate the term with it. btw, the term itself is akin to the "big, medium, small" concept for drawing/design. this man (>>8060334) can also benefit from this concept, since he is into mecha stuff increasing the amount of detail and refining his lineart should give him good results.
