How do background artists do those background details in the far back? Particularly with this kind of visual novel style. The current process I follow is picking colors, separating them on layers so I can easily adjust them and handrawing using a vague reference. Which I feel is tedious and time consuming. And I feel like this process is not very efficient since I end up with 12+ layers for what's like 5% of the picture. Would using 3D models or free materials make more sense for this kind of artstyle? I mainly do character illustrations with a bit of background like in VNs, but I spend more time in background details than character drawing.

trace them out then color like every background artist

Shit like this is why AI is as prevalent today. Normies simply cannot understand how art is made, most don't even know about photobashing. There will be no collective "rising up" by consumers against AI, they already consume it unknowingly with glee. The only saving grace is to get involved with your local politics and community. Let others know what is on the horizon, and it's not the billionaire funded psyop of "it's a bubble, just don't worry about it"
