The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

In order to have this one work you gotta darken the shadows of the piece in order to make the light source of the lantern stand out. An easy way to fuck around with that is duplicating the colors in a seperate layer, add like a Multiply effect to that layer, and use a soft eraser on that layer to erase away the parts of the piece that you want brighter
And if you want this piece to work >>8072768 you gotta integrate the girl into the stained glass more. That would require some more effort but the most easiest way is just making the girls outline THICK, something like pic related. I would also axe the stain glass having the name on it and really focus in on the ribbon being where you display the title. Give more attention to the text there and enlarge the ribbon.
I think I would need to see those improvements in order to judge more properly, but if you wanna print this is a book to sell then the first one with the lantern is the easy choice cause its telling a snippet of a story that you got goin on. The second one even if you follow my advice is more of a page transition-er or chapter art. You know, bonus shit for the viewer

You gotta de-emphasize the trees in that last panel there. There is so much unnecessary detail when the focus should be on the characters and what theyre doing.
The fix is relatively easy, you just gotta de-emphasize the detail the as the trees go further back into space. Like the ones that are the farthest back either just get rid of the lines entirely or opt to make em pure black silhouettes, and the ones that are more in the middle just erase some of the line work you got goin on. Not a lot, just keep the detail minimuim, and the trees that are in front of us you keep the detail.
However I am having issue with the detail that you have decided to draw. The detail seems rather nonsensical when shit like tree bark is rather easy(if a little bit time consuming) to bullshit. Just some squiggles that follow the form of the bark is enough. Going out of you way to do those basic hatching movements doesnt look all natural for a tree cause thats not what people see when looking at tree bark, its all the fucking cracks and bumps. The most complicated it ever gets is if you decide to put one those holes in the tree bark and maybe there you do some hatching in the hole as to represent the shadow but filling that in with black would also work fine.
Look I'll post a crop from one of my pages as an example. Not a lot of detail Im aware, but my image also has a lot more clarity and its easy to distinguish whats in the front versus whats in the back.
>>
>>8072792
check your DMs :)
>>
>>8072784
You actually got the squiggles I was talkin about in my last post kind of right in this page, it doesnt take a lot to convey a tree even in a dark gritty ass story, just goin with the flow is best for drawing shit from nature. However in this page you lose the line thickness on the characters in that top panel there so they end up blending in again. If you cant be bothered with the other characters then at least make the guy in the center of that top panel have thicker lines.

>>
>>8072797
>>8072795
Definitely do need to work on the line thickness for the background then, turn it down for the background and up for the foreground, I'll focus on that on my current pages.

For the tree though, they're meant to be gum trees and other similar austrlian trees, thats why theres all this random shit on them. Think I capture that? probably dont need the had lines though, but I figured itd look better in color
>>
>>8072800
Also thanks, and true, I'll take another look at that. Not sure why it looks proportionally wrong cause I actually traced myself copying some quickshooters on youtube
>>
File: tree_bark.jpg (915 KB, 1920x2068)
915 KB JPG
>>8072802
Well in my reading they didnt read as any specific tree bark, it just look like standard forest trees. Regardless of the tree though I would just have selective lines that highlight the form of the tree. If I wanna indicate that an area of the tree bark is smooth Id probably would make an outline(not a complete one though I'd break up that line), otherwise I'd just add lines that emphasize the form and nothing else, no hatching or any of that shit. And if I wanted to emphasize that a tree bark has a shadow cast on it I'd just add more lines that emphasize the form, but I wouldnt add hatching on top of that, just adding more detail would accomplish the same thing. As for that red bark I would distinguish that with color or screentone, I wouldnt change the way I do the lines on the tree, the determining factor for that is how rough it is and how the cracks form.
Also despite my critiques just know that you are improviong anon, your sense of form has improved(that arm mistake aside) and you have seem to have gotten a better grasp of not senselessly throwing lines and hatching ontop of your characters and therefore achieved more clarity on your forms and how the fabric actually folds. That and the gestures in your characters being less stiff compared to the pages that youve posted months ago. You are gettin better, anon.
>>
>>8072805
Honestly thanks for that, I'll probably copy that onto some trees for the next page and then try and make the rest actually give the impression of bark. Also thanks for the kind words. hopefully keep practicing and getting better
>>
>>8072804
Well unless I see the pic for reference(please dont post it dont doxx yourself) I imagine that even if you did trace it it could have just been an awkward pose, like maybe you held the gun too close to your tummy or something or the camera angle was bad. Even if it was a very accurate trace that doesnt make it inherently a good looking image. Photography can be very misleading cause we always take photographs of people at face value so we wont read an awkward photo as inaccurate or wrong, but translate that to a drawing and the nuance is gone.

Is it sufficient to draw like Mob Psycho 100 to get people to read your story?

Would a true amateur manga magazine work? No talent-rats allowed. Only scribbly manga. That can be done in 1-2 days. So it‘s cheap and so it can work for true amateurs who gos to work or school and who has only the weekends to draw manga.

Thank you for all the feedback.
I'm now planning to write a new one-shot story.
I still aim for Mix Green.

>issues with faces and figures
>too many talking heads
>overly re-used panels
Yeah, it's my blunder.
I drew the entire 31 pages in just 1 week.
That's 4-5 pages a day to draw, I had no choice but to cut corners on my art quality to meet the deadline.
On that note, quite a few anon said my art looks like 'Houseki no Kuni'.
kek
I never even read this, might do one day.

>Too dense Paneling feels too comic booky not very manga
>you should try more panels variety
>It doesn't feel like a manga, but an european comic
Fair enough.
I thought by making my paneling looking like "cubicle office" without any variety like:
-panel expanding through the outer margin,
-diagonal paneling,
-no border, etc.
combine with limiting my camera angle, I could enhance the "mockumentary" nuance more.
I was wrong.
And I found it too risky to do what Fujimoto did in 'Goodbye, Eri' because only he has the privilege to do that.
I'll try trimming my paneling to just 4-7 per page for my next work and cease limiting myself and fully utilize comic as a visual medium.

>Plot is kind of a problem, lost me in the middle somewhere so the ending didn't land
>Story ended up being a bit confusing
>it's actually hard to keep track of
>other problems in writing and technical skills
Points taken.
Have clarity and be persuasive.
Focus on only few ideas, desires, choices and challenge it.
Make things easily digestible even a worn-out guy who just had a bad day can easily process it. Don't make reading feels like a chore.
"Keep It Simple, Stupid."

>poor english
Yeah, sorry.
Next time, I'll just write in my native language and have it translated to JP and EN.

I think magazine is the wrong way to think of it.
A magazine has its roots in professionalism, it's got set publishing schedules, style guides, etc, it's not suited to amateurs. Even just saying to such a person
>hey wanna join my magazine
Is going to deter them.
Maybe instead call it a club, the manga weekend warrior club or something.
>>
>>8072835
>>8072894
also, while you want to attract amateurs and not have them be overshadowed by more skilled artists... you don't want the whole thing to serve as a sort of crab bucket that is opposed to becoming skilled. Ideally all you should desire to become incredibly skilled, and that desire should drive you to make your manga. If you're all just content being bad, that's kinda miserable, there's gotta be a motivating atmosphere to the whole thing
>>
>>8072835
Ask yourself why anyone would want to read that instead of something professional.
>it'll be fast

>Do I really need to learn all that perspective stuff and other boring fundamentals? I just want to start doodling and get straight to what I actually want to draw.
You can start drawing right away, nobody says you can't in regards to a simple comic. But the second you want to draw things a specific way for a plot that goes beyond the most basic newspaper funny comic like Garfield, you're going to have to learn a few things, with learning how to portray things from a specific perspective at the very top of the list.

I tried a style with may bigger lines. So i used all my western western soft nibs, italic nibs, the parallel pen as well...
It's thick but you have much less control, in comparison to a g-nib.
It's so satisfyingly precise and sharp.
I have Deletter gpen, which are considered hard.
The line is thick enough, but to achieve the right thickness 've to press down awkwardly hard. Feels like it wasn't intended for such use.
Zebra is softer, does it make a difference? Is it worth switching brands?
In the last thread it was discussed that new zebras are stiffer, so is the difference even that big?

>>8072997
Overall i like it. The girl looks too old. I'm not a fan of how you draw the city.
The pacing is not ideal. You show the shooter, than a page of them running and next page he is hit by the arrow. There no surprise and no suspense.
If you show the arrow shot out of nowhere and explain it after, it would be surprising, even though this trope is a little bit overused.
Or you show the shooter and the pay off is later, when the shooter is already forgotten. The moment is still surprising but it was already explained, which makes it feel less cheap.
The way drew it, it feels anticlimactic.

The arrow does get shot out of nowhere, here is the page before >>8072997

Overall, it is somewhat anticlimactic, but that's somewhat the intention. While I have been working on this for over a year, it's only a 35 page comical chase scene, it's not supposed to be very serious. My hope is that it be read in about 2 minutes.

Please do tell me about the way I'm drawing the city. I'm also a little dissatisfied with it. It's a balance between drawing it quickly and drawing it detailed.
>>
>>8073074
Hmm, i don't see what it is supposed to mean. I would assume it supposed to be physical and funny. But a slapstick sequence does follow a pattern. Something funny or surprising supposed to happen. If someone is too arrogant, he falls and you can laugh about him.
I don't know i'm not good with comedy.
But here the guy runs, someone shoots an arrow, misses.
You show the shooter making adjustments.
The thief is like, okey, he missed, i will continue running.
And than the arrow hit's him.
You know?
For example if the guy is running, the arrow comes, he jumps, and the arrow misses. He sees the second arrow coming, he jumps again, but the arrow has a twist, changes direction in the last moment and he is hit.
This way there is bit of story going on, he thinks he can do the same thing again, but nope, the shooter adjusted, he did not, so he looses.
Yeah, anyway. Pg32, the diagonal horizon line is very disorienting.

I wanted to see how it would do as a fresh story, and the old version was kinda shitty anyways. There's still problems but I didn't want to to completely redraw it, it was more like targeted changes of the worst pages.

Manga with good all that stuff but low art style, is better than polished and good looking manga with sbysmal writing. But at the end of the day the polished looking manga gets more views on social media since it looks better, and people only find out it sucks after reading. It would be hard to find actual good manga makers that know how to write but I think its possible, you just have to turn away 10x as many bad writers.
>>
>>8073267
>But at the end of the day the polished looking manga gets more views
And takes 200 man hours per chapter instead of i don't know 5 to 30.

I dont know why they don't try this, maybe they do and just dont advertise it. But outwardly they always talk about how they want people with amazing art skills, disinfo warfare.
>>
>>8073292
That's not a strategy i see a lot of people doing. Maybe cos it's stupid. Maybe for some other reason. Maybe more people are interested in rendering than visual storytelling, paneling and so on.

Definitely a step in the right direction. I do have some more suggestions, some with a higher priority then others. I made an edit for comparison. One that I definitely think should be implemented is cheating the light logic a little bit and applying it to the other girl. Even if actual light wouldnt be hitting her given the lamps location you dont wanna lose her in the darkness. Id also keep the starry night sky still closer to what you had it originally, cause now with the contrast of the darker landscape it creates a good contrast with a brighter top half of the composition as opposed to the dark as shit bottom which is being lit solely by the girls light. The last one that I suggest but maybe not take too seriously is apply more light to the statue too. I say that cause now after doing the edit, having the halo effect around the statue actually looks good. Maybe if you push that it can also look good. I'll leave that to your judgment.
Either way though Id say its def' better then the OG one in terms of vibes, if you told me to fuck off and stick with this one youd still be pretty alright(but finish those fucking feet damn it the bitch in the back just got stumps)

I'm secretly jealous of people who can just write slice of life shit with zero overarching plot and barely anything happening, yet somehow get people hooked enough to pay for it. They don't have to spend years grinding away to make every panel look gorgeous or stress over story structure and pacing just to keep readers from dropping them. They can take the most mundane everyday situation, turn it into some cute little character dynamic, and stretch it across a whole chapter, and people eat that shit up. These people are living their career on easy mode. No elaborate premise, no intricate lore, no heavy narrative lifting, just a handful of fun characters, good comedy, and an endless supply of everyday bullshit to draw from. Meanwhile, I've got zero sense of humor, zero actual interest in the genre, and a brain that's literally incapable of writing or enjoying that kind of shit. I couldn't pull that off even if I tried.
>>
>>8073510
>No elaborate premise, no intricate lore, no heavy narrative lifting
unnecessary complexity tends to be a beginner trap and it's usually lot less interesting than they think
>>
>>8073510
Most of it is just lowest common denominator "relatable" content. It requires little effort to make, but even on the reader's side, there's essentially no barrier of entry. Its also made to be spread all over social media like twitter, reddit and facebook, and a reader can see someone post strip number 572, and not have to read the 571 that came before it to "get it."

Also, Slice of life are probably some of the very first webcomics that came around in the early days of the internet. Some of them did have some action/adventure/etc intertwined in, but in many cases, those larger plots were sort of happening in the background in favor of needing little context for each daily strip.

A standard comic board is 11"x17"
Some Japs use smaller, but many still draw at that size. One of my favorites has his own custom boards printed at that size to draw on

This is why digital comics/manga have a strange look to people used to reading older ones, the artist is not working at the standard scale or with real tools so their lines are out of proportion to the page and look unnatural.
>>
>>8073540
Why they cancelled this manga?
>>
Speaking of page size.
If i'm looking for a crude line work. Does it make sense to upscale my page? Like inking it on A5 or even A6 so that the lines look thicker on a monitor?

>>8073606

I heard 2 versions of the answer.
1 Woke twitter wone and the fascist was canceled.
2 The mangaka had a good idea for a couple of chapters, but after it getting more popular he has to stretch it out, without knowing what to tell in his story. And he softened the edge a lot, that many saw as the main selling point of the manga.
>>
>>8073620
I draw trad then scan and clean up digitally. I have drawn some things all digital, but I just don't like the look of it for a page.

Working on adding screentones digitally too, I used to ink wash before scanning but that's dicey
>>
Well, the third possible meta-answer is.
It was a good edgy manga at the start. Woke twitter tried to cancel it. The author got panic and softened the story a lot. Which did not the woke buy his manga of course. But at the same time the original edge lord fans were mad that he caved in to the woke mob and ditched it as well.

Do you think manga making helped you improve your skill in general? I've been drawing so many complex scenes way out of my comfort zone lately. It's been a while since I drew anything that wasn't related to my manga, but I do feel like I have gotten more comfortable with drawing in general. I'm gonna have to draw some more concept arts soon, so I'm gonna take that chance to see if I notice any real difference.
>>
>>8073643
>Do you think manga making helped you improve your skill in general?
Absolutely. You are forced via your comic's story to draw a ton of things that would be normally way out of the wheelhouse of people who only draw mecha or people who only draw floating anime girl in a void #4842834857. Different random objects, different angles, different emotions and reactions, etc etc etc.

I probably would be a better artist if I never tried to make manga and just focused on copying references instead.
Drawing from references is way more impressive for the dumb normie because he doesn't give a shit if you practice for years and years to be able to draw from imagination.

Appeal to emotion, maybe. >>8074281
Secondly the pages that you are posting as a rebuttal are in bloody Japanese, and the manga that I was critiquing >>8074357
is English. If you are writing/drawing with English as the intended language when doing a Right to Left orientation and after reading a bunch of bubbles that do the typical
-
>...Fuck
>You
>Faggot
-
But then you try to do the pure horizontal thing like my Japanese mangas and write
>Fuck You Faggot
but your English reader up til that point was still doing right to left reading so in the moment they would read
>Faggot Fuck You
and be thrown off cause after jumping from a right to left orientation you now suddenly have to read that horizntal panel like you would in a normal English textbook. English readers can still adapt to right to left orientation just fine in part cause the speech bubbles isolate the text and the words stack on top of each other so its hard to get lost, but small things like this can throw off English readers, and it was more pressing to highlight that for that anons comic cause it was part of a bunch of smaller mistakes and quirks that piled up and made it hard to read

>>8074479
>dude it would be read the same if the text was written horizontally
Still doesnt contradict the fact that flow is still different for Japanese readers versus English readers cause we always gotta write our shit horizontally and left to right unless your fine just limiting yourself to one word for each line when writing dialogue. The concession to read a manga R to L but still read the dialogue in a standard English way is already a big ask and you wanna make it easy
My priorities might be different from you fags cause I write my shit with literal children in mind so I try to keep it as easy to read as possible. Im sure you guys have a high tolerance, but you guys also arent editors judging however many fucking entries for a contest and losing you patience with every entry you gotta go through. Im thinking through that lense, and I might sound "wack" doing the analysis, but guess what? So are the editors who didnt pick anons comic. I'm sure if they were your first or second shounen manga you'd enjoy them a lot more too. You gotta remember these works are targeting a new audience each time. The target audience of Kagurabachi haven't read Naruto. They probably haven't read JJK either. Whatever new series they're talking about isn't generic or mid to them, because it's their first time experiencing this kind of work so it's blowing their mind.
And this is the part where you ask yourself if the works that you venerate weren't just because it was the first time YOU experienced that kind of work.

Thoughts on female sexualization in manga that isn't marketed as an ecchi genre or narou-fantasy style genre?
Pic related is The Knight of Blasphemy.
It's about a young man from an ordinary background who joins the knights to end the bloodbath between the two biggest religions.
It takes itself quite seriously with geo-political conflict and stuff, and suddenly this sexy lady appears.
It's serialized in Monthly Young Magazine, a seinen magazine, but honestly, this demography thing is just not relevant anymore, because this magazine can even serialize a Yaoi-bait manga.
