Lived in Colorado for a while and seeing Cali plates immediately makes you go into full awareness mode. They can’t drive even by American standards.

I don't have a car yet, but public transport sucks so much I want to get one
I'm thinking about buying a used small car, something like pic related, 5-10 years old with less than 100.000km of mileage
those are still 6.000-8.000€ here used
I don't even know how to register it etc., but I feel not having a car is one part of why I still feel like a kid
>>
>>214476049
I don't despise it. But it is kinda shitty. Some electrical issues, the horn doesn't work, not very comfortable on longer drives and the heater is kinda crap. But I still like it.

>>
>>214476217
It's a low-cost car, I',be read that the worst con was the seats padding. BTW, it's the awd version? Does it handle over snow Ok given that it uses a haldex transmission?
>>
>>214476136
No idea how it is in Germany but the used dealership will do the registration part, if you buy it privately then you’d have to do all the paperwork yourself

using public transport is way less convenient than having a car, I just didn't get one yet because it's a significant cost factor and I'm quite frugal

no ac
slow as fuck 50 hp 0-100 is like 20 seconds
unstable at "high" speeds like 120 kmh
hard to drive if you dont know how to drive rwd with engine at the back
but super easy to work on,ŵ you can drive it forever if you change the fluids every year (very easy)
people always turn their head to see it you can park it alongisde the new m5 the beetle is still more intresting

Boot is non-existent with the rear seats up.
A large full backpack won't let you close the rear hatch if you put it behind the seats. and If you put the rear seats in the "fully reclined" position without the headrest you can put your head against the rear glass.
I do have the factory rubber mat that you cover the rear seats when folded and it's made from very soft supple grippy rubber so shit doesn't slide all over the place while breaking.

Proper full expedition roof rack (with a mesh "floor") is a must if you need to travel with more than one passanger and some luggage.

Crown Vics are considerably bigger and heavier, maybe by about 20%, and have the same power-to-weight ratio, but lack a certain feeling behind the wheel--a certain quiet at high speeds, the kind of ride quality that feels about the same at 90 as 110 on properly engineered roads.
>>214492900
i live about halfway between Chicago and Des Moines. 75mph is the average. I usually make it from Earlville to Somonauk in 9 minutes.

Must be nice. The average speed in Stockholm city is like 10-15mph unless you're sitting still in a traffic jam.

The most clapped out Mini Cooper known to man. I bought it three years ago because it had a fresh-ish state inspection to get me through the winter. But the frame is clean and fixing it myself is cheap so I'm still driving it. Fun car, honestly.
I've also got an MX-5 but that needs some more work.
>>
>>214494859
New car value has zero meaning here. The moment a car rolls of the floor, it's dropped 30-35% in value. Each year after that, it keeps dropping significantly.
At least here in Sweden until you reach veteran-car age (30 years or older) at which point the car is tax free and much cheaper to insure and only need inspection every 2 years (no inspection after 50 years). But everything between brand new and veteran age is basically worthless here. You're buying a modern car, that's used, paying full price for insurance, hoping it's in good enough condition to pass inspection and.... Not worth a lot.

I don't drive enough to warrant buying a new car but when I do rent and drive it's fucking infuriating with these new cars. Need to make an adjustment to your parking job? They lock themselves and won't run if you don't have the seatbelt all the way on.
Lane keep assist or whatever it is tries to drive the fucking car for you.
One hundred screens in my face and boop beep boop shit.
Sometimes the ignition is just a fucking button. Pretty soon some yoyo is going to put a voice activated ignition in a fucking car.
I hate cars as much as I hate the distance everything is from me.

I got it from my dad. I like how it sounds and it’s pretty cozy. It’s got a 6.0 V8 with terrible mileage but I really only take it to work a couple miles away. Every spring I fill it with like 2 yards of dirt for my garden. Every now and then I tow a buddy out of some mud too but it’s mostly a grocery getter.

There's one sitting on every street, there's a lot of replacement parts, taxes and insurance are fairly cheap, these can easily do over 500k km, if the boomer owner let it get serviced every 2 years or so.

i work for a logistics department that uses a lot of non-commercial vehicles due to small load size. Toyota holds up to severe abuse and breaks in predictable ways. Ford is the same but with a tendency towards inexplicable failures and gremlins. Despite the gremlins, Fords can make it to 500,000km over a relatively short period used in a commercial application. Say 500k in ~5-7 years. I wouldn't trust a Ford to make it that high without serious mechanical intervention at 15+ years. Others:
Chrysler can hang in
Mazda cannot
We don't have any Hondas because Toyota is a better deal in that segment.

I know. They're built on the Navarra platform and made in Thpain. We couldn't get them in the US due to a 25% import duty on foreign trucks. They're also too small to be competitive here most likely. Also seen a few Mercedes L series pickups and unimogs here. Those are made in Mexico/Brapzil.

I figured. I own picrel car and was amazed to see the exact same thing branded as BYD. Some ukranian refugee drove it with ukrainian plates.

The BYD Dorphin isn't related to these at all. It's an electric cuckmobile made out of Chineseum. Good batteries though.
