You basically cannot buy a house with bad credit in America unless you're buying directly from the owner (which has its own risks). For instance, in 2012 my score was like 430ish. I was able to secure a loan for 18k to buy a used VW Jetta but my interest rate was legitimately 18%. 2 years ago my score was about 800 and I was able to buy a new 48k pickup truck at around 4.5% interest.

Here it's more binary. If you've had the enforcement agency collect a debt, it makes it difficult to rent an apartment or get a loan and stuff. Otherwise you're usually fine.
