The place that used to be downtown is economicaly sterile since the 80's, the heavy comercial and finnancial activity that defines a downtown district is randomly sprawled around the city. This makes commuting absolutely hell as there's no public transport other than buses and the metro. The metro only reaches certain parts of the southern and western parts of the city, and it's more of an easy way to leave the city than travel within it.

Does this happen in your city?

Commuting is fine. The city planners have to keep public transport up to date, otherwise it will fail eventually. But the city is sprawling in every direction.

What defines a downtown is main plaza + government building + church. It doesn't matter how much activity it has

The centre where most people meet. The issue is though that everything becomes a down town at some point. Here it's not neccesarily the city center.

what do the people in these buildings do? corporate drug trade?

basically since the 90s with privatization of public companies all capital city centers basically became crackhouses due to sudden drop in investments and the sellout for cheap for private companies which had no interest in maintaining historical buildings and infrastructure.

But not that we had a choice as the federal government had to comply with the USA agenda

crazy that leftists actually believe dumb shit like this

it's literally what happened. All Latin America underwent economic shock therapies and had US-aligned governments in the 90s. Neoliberalism was all the rage and the USA geopolitical power was at maximum. Hence, the only way to actually bring foreign investments was to submit to the US world order which dictated that the government should get rid of all its state companies so that private investment can take over.

Different from Western Europe or East Asia, no american investor wanted to invest in South America, so basically what happened, was that we gave up our power in return for nothing, cities became haunted with poverty, the dollar went to the moon, and unemployment and inequality skyrocketed. And that is precisely what made the left rise to power in Latin America.

The left only exists in Latin America because the USA doesn't give a shit about us at all and it was never a priority for american investors different from Western Europe or East Asia

I am really jealous of european and east-asian public transport planning

literally a leftist conspiracy theory
to the extent that america has got involved in Brazil, it has always been in a leftwards direction
but everything is america's fault right? pathetic
>>

>to the extent that america has got involved in Brazil, it has always been in a leftwards direction
Yeah I agree! In 1964 the USA sent its aircraft carrier to do some naval exercises to support a communist take over

in a sense, our downtowns (old towns) turned into tourist disneylands, no one lives there permanently, everything is rented out to tourists, all non-tourist-oriented businesses closed down as well. Though a great deal of local business was eaten by shopping centres too, thankfully now there is a reverse trend to demolish these giant centres and replace them with apartment complexes with shops on the first floor, like it should be

you have no idea what you have. i live in a 1 million metro and without a car i can only access about 20% of the city. if i want to spend hours finding my way around inefficient transfers and walking for a long time i can maybe get to 40%. the other 60% is completely inaccessible unless you have a car.
>>
>>214585133
They are trying to turn our oldtown into a mix of tourist dysneyland and startup mecca, but they will have to deal with all the vacant buildings and crackdens first for it to work. The shopping center fad on another hand is very strong here and there are plans to build more and more, but malls are clean, climatized and crime-free, I see why there's demand for more over here

It's one of the 10 worst cities to commute in the world according to the TomTom ranking lol. Brazil being "walkable" is an huge lie, sure I can get bread and aspirins a walk away from home but going to work or anywhere entretaining is a pain in the ass, nothing works properly and unlike america you can't even find good parking half the time
>>
>>214584166
What is that shithole? Recife?
>>
>>214585574
>going to work or anywhere entretaining is a pain in the ass
I live two blocks away from the local mall, so I can't relate.
>>
>>214585574
Just work selling bread and do aspirins for entretainement
There, problema solved

Norway no. Several public transport youtuber fags have made vids about public transport in Bergen (300K population city) because they love it.
Typical ride during rush hour https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c3P382Cwi4s

Am I supposed to recognize this city?

Any no we have a defined downtown but it's difficult to commute there with public transit. You're better off driving or cycling.
>>
>>214584419
Funny of you to post that considering the facts recently unfolded in the federal republic of the Brazil

The economy was already in shambles before they privatization frenzy and the adoption of the Washington Consensus
>>
>>214584166
yes. it's the norm
outside of SF(only the city) Chicago, and NY, places here don't have a proper downtown and the transit blows.

Not really but had to attach an image to open a thread and didn't wanted to use a frog. What city are you from?

It was, but privatization made it worse after the stabilization of inflation. Shock therapy was a mistake here
