I work in the tourism industry and we have to put up signs specifically in German to warn about things like rip currents because you motherfuckers speak worse English than a Swedish 5 year old.
I hate having to deal with you motherfuckers, you are by far the worst tourists we get when it comes to speaking English.
And it pisses me off so much because you are also some of the best tourists in other regards, how can you do so many things right but not bother to learn the international language when travelling abroad?
Fucking analbanians with half of their teeth rotted out speak better english than you.
Do YOU not feel shame coming to my country and expect ME do translations pro bono?

germans live in a society so full of rules its actually illegal to walk across a road. when they come here they feel freedom for the first time in their life, but they dont understand that our rules are there for safety due to forces of nature we cant control. if a signpost and fence say "dont approach the glacier" its not because we care, its because an iceberg migh fall on your head any time. germs cannot into this, they dont understand how we can both cross the road on a red light (just loon for cars, no cars = clear to pass) and be adviced not to walk under glaciers (you cant predict it and when it happends you dont have time to run away) they just lack common sense.
>>

Germans are known here as well behaved tourists, but they are very strict about evaluating tourism products. They have little desire to buy expensive souvenirs or experience tours, yet they are known for frequently visiting almost free facilities like museums or hiking. Since they tend to stay for a long time, their daily expenditure is rather low. This has become a bit of a concern recently, especially with tourism capacity being nearly saturated.

German is a global language spoken by hundreds of millions of people, they get virtually all the content created anywhere in the world translated to German so there is no need to learn English for them, or at least not to put so much emphasis on that.

Meanwhile Swedish is spoken by barely 10 million Swedes and 3.454 Finns and no one bothers to translate anything to this language so learning English is necessary for you to have any access to global culture and science.

>I've been to Finland by the way and you speak like Russians, constantly omitting a and the and forgetting plural forms
first off you most likely dont know when you are speaking to a Finn

exactly so you dont really need to learn English
and major youtubers have German dubs and the further things develop the more normal it will be for youtube videos to be dubbed entirely
>>
>>214590803
>this is not weird since those dont exist in Finnish language
Don't worry, that means your language is the normal one. Articles are just completely unnecessary and I have no idea why would anyone come up with an idea to create them, or at least in the way so they must be attached to every noun.
>>
>>214590841
>and major youtubers have German dubs and the further things develop the more normal it will be for youtube videos to be dubbed entirely

no one has to learn English but...one has to learn to go to school? I doubt there is a single nation on earth that isnt some dirt house place where people arent learning English in school. Although no one really learns English by going to school, they learn it by using it.

on the other hand, afaik most people who learnt German but didn't practice it after finishing the school, forgot it very quickly. Apparently it's very hard to remember German words because of how long and complicated they are, also because of how Germans loved inventing new words based on German roots (especially in 19th century) rather than using "international" Latin roots like other languages do.

in Finland kids nowadays start learning English in the first grade so some kids are almost bilingual. Its a worrying trend, but that is how it is.

AI would need to be very fast and good to actually cause any reversal to this trend and its not gonna be there for decades.
>>
>>214591077
This is correct and (surprisingly to some) it applies to Germany as well.
This only makes it more embarrassing for countries like Sweden and Finland to do worse than Germany
They are sooo proud of their quirky positive good boy stereotype the anglo assigned to them that it really hurts them when Germans are good at speaking a closely related language (i.e. Haus/House, Water/Wasser etc.). Insanity

>>214591081

I wouldn't be so sure, given the current pace of development, I think in 5 years AI translation will be flawless and indistinguishable from native speech. Even now I am often surprised how well it translates stuff to Polish, which is a very complicated language after all.

I had an encounter with the lead salesman in Freenet store in Leipzig when I had problems with their sim-card. So, I greeted him, told him that I have a problem, he gave me a nod and then I proceeded to explain the nature of the problem for 2 minutes. Afterwards, the salesman pulls out fucking Google Translator and explains via it that if I have problems I need to call their hotline. When I repeated in German this time that I can't call their fucking hotline because my German is not good enough to explain the problem I deal with, he replied that he can't help it.The salesman was mid 30s/early 40s white Germ and there was a younger German worker but the Germ refused to let me speak to him. In a sense, but some languages are easier to memorize and some are harder. But ofc there is also native bias regarding that, German is simply so different from Polish so it requires much more attention and work not to get rusty in our heads comparing to let's say Russian

at least in Finland, unions used to have one thing about collective agreements in service sector where it said that if you had to use English in customer service they would have to pay you more.
that got scrapped like rather recently, but Germany could have those kind of agreements where it is seen as extra work they didnt agree to

>No, Adolf Hitler did not speak English fluently—or even conversationally. His primary language was German, and while he may have had limited exposure to other languages like French or English through media or schooling, he never developed proficiency in them.
>There are accounts, such as one from Deborah Cavendish, who met Hitler alongside her sister Unity Mitford, that confirm he relied entirely on others to communicate with English speakers. Unity, who spoke German, did all the talking during their meeting, while Deborah and her mother couldn’t converse with him due to the language barrier.
>Interestingly, some sources suggest Hitler occasionally watched English and French films in their original languages before the war, possibly to absorb cultural cues or for propaganda analysis—but this didn’t translate into actual language skills.

Haven't talked to a lot of Koreans though, mostly Japanese and Chinese. A lot of Chinese seem to prefer to use Swedish, even if they are so hard to understand you wish they would just switch to English.

Also, I will say despite their reputation Japanese people have been surprisingly rude and entitled in my interactions, nowhere near some nationalities of course, but still a bit surprising.

Dutch is the most similar when written but when spoken Swedish and Norwegian are easier to understand.
Still when I hear Durch people on the train I can understand what they are talking about despite not being able to talk to them in Dutch in the slightest

welp apparently PISA will start taking English scores in 2025 so we shall see if you are correct that Germans actually speak better English than Swedes or Finns
I highly doubt it. I would be very shit at English without internet and if you are able to live in a non-English bubble when you play games, browse the internet etc. then you have no way to learn English properly

Neither he nor anybody else in East Germany speaks Russian, besides the Russian Germans. I know it because Russian is my native language. Here's an example of East Germans """"speaking"""" Russian: me and my mates stand in a bank talking to each other. An old 60yo German turns around and in poor English starts making a small talk with us, I ask him what languages he speaks and he gave me the usual: German, English, Russian. But somehow the old dude did not recognize that we were speaking pure Russian and misstook us for Romanian speakers, how do you "learn" Russian without even recognizing real Russian speech is beyond me

This isn't impossible, some English accents can be easily confused for some other language at first glance even by those who speak English very well.

That's the difference between Russian and English or German, there's almost no local dialects in Russian language, unless you speak to Caucasians or Asians. Even most Belarusians and Ukrainians speak Russian pure enough that you won't spot the difference without C2 proficiency. Zelenskyi speaks Russian absolutely the same way as anybody who grew up in Russia, just like Lukashenko

How it it that Wypipo spend far less time studying for tests and have much less draconian education systems than East Asians that give their students mental illness and suicidal impulses because they're forced to study 12 hours per day for shit like the Gaokao, but wypipo still get the same test scores or even better in international rankings. What causes this? Are wypipo genes really that strong?

Can't agree, Lukashenko has a very clear accent. He pronounces 'g' as 'h' and final 'ov' as 'ou'.

Lukashenko puts on an act to appease Belarusians and look like a funny kind uncle rather than a brutal dictator he is.
>>
>>214595779
>appease Belarusians
I don't think it would appease Belarussians, actually most Belarussians don't like their accent, they think it sounds "village" and try to get rid of it. Young Belarussians don't even have it anymore.
And you can kinda see that Lukashenko tries to speak without an accent too, he often starts his speeches speaking more standard Russian, but once he proceeds, gets more emotional and forgets about the way he speaks, then he unconsciously returns to his native Belarussian accent.

>a funny kind uncle rather than a brutal dictator he is.

He is just both at once, it's not contradictory. Same like many cruel Nazis who beat and torture Jewish kids to death at their shift in a concentration camp, would return home and suddenly turn into best husbands, dads, grandfathers to their own family.

Yeah, because of Soviet mandatory universal education. All the nation-states of Europe have been slowly wiping out their regional dialects since some time in the 18th or 19th century, the Soviets just did it more efficiently.
