I remember in Arabic class being taught that the arabic number system derived from the hindi one had each number correspond to the amount of angles in that symbol which is why 0 is a circle because it has no angles. 1 has a single angle if you give it a serif, 2 has two if written like a z and so on. The numbers were eventually simplified from there to our modern ones.

Arabic numerals actually originate from India albeit. Even if you use 123...etc. it doesn't matter

I've heard that the use of a circle or oval shape to designate zero was independently discovered at various points in history, but in all cases represented an empty enclosed area, or an open circuit.

Well, they ultimately derive from Indian numerals, but then again, both the Arabic and Latin scripts ultimately derive from Egyptian hieroglyphs by the way of the Phoenician abjad, but nobody would dare to claim that they are identical simply because they share the same origin.
After all, branches from the same tree are not the same branch.

We don't use those, we use your typical numerals.
1 2 3 4...are called western "arabic" numerals (they aren't exactly arabic, they have their own interesting backstory)
While the other ones you typically call "arabic" numerals, are eastern arabic numerals, those are still uses in some countries such as syria and egypt.
So yeah, we don't use eastern arabic numerals.
