Even if their actual national population isn't growing, they can just keep moving the unproductive poors into the productive cities for quite awhile longer until their demographic crisis really catches up with them. Basic infrastructure, electricity, plumbing, running water, railway electrification, literacy rates growing, etc. If you compare the metro systems in Delhi to New York (low bar admittedly) Delhi is far nicer and actually clean unironically. It's just that modernization has just recently begun. It won't become apparent until India's GDP hits at least 5 trillion.
