This map shows not who had land claims, a fort, or a fortified trade post. For instance, yes France had Fort Duquesne in Pittsburgh for example but that was a pure military fort, not a settlement with a permanent population.

This map looks at which powers had SETTLEMENTS in the states BEFORE the USA took power. You need at least one real town.

British policy of limiting westward expansion is a big reason a lot of the land they took from france did not have any english settlements, just forts and trade posts.

Interesting for Utah the first white settlers were under Mexico but they were Americans + Euro converts escaping persecution.

Ohio is my favorite... the first european settlement in ohio was Marietta in 1788. The british fought a war essentially over Ohio and then proceded to not even form a single settlement there lol

Most of those mid west "french" states had a very small presence but if it's marked blue there was at least one legitimate town with settlers not just a fort
