I don't think "bottle" is a true d sound. Compare words that have a "tt" in the middle versus those with a "dd" in the middle. For example, "meddle" versus "mettle." It's dropped entirely in casual settings, since most questions are short you can see the '?'. Accents are also dropped, but not as much, you may have noticed this. It also doesn't help that most Spanish speakers cannot properly write their own language.

I'd suggest only using '¿' when writing formal texts or emails, nobody really cares outside of those settings. But I'd advise against dropping accents since it could hinder your learning.

I swear I've heard French people pronounce "in"/"im" in two different ways, [œ̃] or [ɛ̃]. I usually hear [œ̃] in Youtube videos but Wiktionary only has [ɛ̃] for words like "intéressant" etc.

Two unconnected concepts. but somehow shakespeare is never called pretentious for the same reasons. if the oxford dictionary is to be believed (it is not) then a lot of english words have first been popularized by him and his works. i get that his whole deal was that he was good at using different registers of english, but it is also said that he coined words which largely were just latin words with affixes.

He lived 500 years ago and the dynamic relationship between Latin and the average person was totally different then. Plus a lot of his works were based on Latin texts.

It’s totally different for a society where everyone learned can read Latin to introduce Latinity into the language. It’s basically how it entered German too. That’s very different from someone in 2025 overusing Latinate words in an attempt to sound intelligent. Also Shakespeare’s usage and prose broke new ground, and sits among the pinnacle of the language.

Should’ve addressed this before. Even Old English had a substantial amount of Latin loanwords. Loaning directly from Latin over the centuries has basically nothing to do with the French. Also, you Germans speak a conlang anyways, while the American tongue is free, unregulated, natural, and thereby maintains peerless expressive versatility.

I think for a target language since redditors always say to use Harry Potter because it’s a long series that they love, I’m just going to sit down with a contemporary-language edition of the bible in my TL and read the whole thing as my core reading input for the first year since I have entire chapters nearly memorized.

A lot of people learn a language by reading the bible (or, more often, the gospel, which is at least more interesting than the fictional history of the jews). The problem is that the bible tends to be translated in a slightly unnatural old-timey sounding style.

Depends on the translation available I guess. The gospels are specifically the easiest to read, and centered around a lot of intentionally basic phrases of “X went to Y and did Z so that A” type of stuff. It beats Harry Potter lol. I’ve been using it for Latin and even just a couple weeks of reading practice has dramatically opened up the readability of a pretty wide range of texts for me. What a late beginner needs is basically just a shitload of practice comprehending essential wordings/sentences. The Gospels fit that best, but I flipped to a random page of Deuteronomy and found the wording to be substantially the same. Reading all of the narrative texts is at least worthwhile. It’s hilarious that Arguelles spends a whole video talking about the “Harry Potter Stage” of language learning without ever discussing the Bible’s use in this way. For my part, I’m going to read it daily anyways, and I have already read it in English, so I might as well use it as a way to build reading ability.

That Portuguese was just Spanish. As it would make the main Romance languages a literal Holy Trinity (Spanish, French, and Italian) and make South American travel a bit more easier.
