Unironically, World War I. France was able to recover after the Napoleonic Wars, but after WWI, huge losses, and constant political crisis, France's fate as a world power was a foregone conclusion. The only thing the French should have done was to deport all Arabs from Algeria to any other colony, as Stalin did with the Crimean Tatars, then this endless war with Algeria would not have happened in the 1950s.
