Well Many East Asians were shorter because the generation right before (excluding Japan) grew up in much poorer economies and ate much less.

The current young generation are the guys eating as much as they like and growing tall to their true genetic limit (~175 cm average).

For example, Japanese people have the shortest East Asian genetics, but for several decades they were the tallest in East Asia because they were the first to Industrialize and prosper in a modern economy. Koreans in the 19th-early 20th centuries noticed how the Japanese soldiers were taller than the local Koreans.
