People get too confused by the individualist vs collectivist dichotomy and it's not all that useful here anyway. We're both a part of quasi socialist democratic-republic welfare states. This much is immaterial.I would call the American vs European mentality as more ambition vs satisfaction. Americans want to workmaxx and consumemaxx, have all the opportunities open to them, while Europeans want their comforts and guarantees and are happy with high floor/low ceiling. This tracks perfectly since the only Euros that would ever up and move to an entirely different continent would be remarkably ambitious. The subtle but major effects of genetics aren't lost here.
