The great la.. islandsyou need something small enough to get a basic civilisation going first without constant raids so it needs to be easily definisble (island) but still close enough to trade with others.the medeterranian may be ok with its peninsulas and choke points but it is too large to subsume into one civilisation early on which will result in constant attacks from other civs
