I read an article about a petition somewhere that is about making Italian an official language again.
Among the comments of an uninformed nature beneath the aforementioned article, which are all against, there are those who rightly highlight the Maltese language's dire situation (ironically in badly written Maltese), with some even saying that not even English should remain as an official language. What irritates me is that many can't realise that two things can exist at once. Us neglecting Maltese is not because a second language - in this case English - has an official status, but rather because we have a spiteful attitude towards Maltese.
>>214819461It's because us Maltese are one of the least chauvinistic people in Europe. Look at how both PN and PL have a boner for foreigners, but especially the PN of Eddie and Gonzi was all about how the foreigners do everything better. And Mintoff before that really wished we could just become a British territory.I've spent almost half my life abroad and you won't find other EU people with such a lack of pride and so much disdain for their own culture. Only the Spanish come close. They will openly criticize their country. But they still have a much stronger national identity than Maltese people do.I guess it comes with the territory. Being a border country with a permanent identity crisis and all that.

>>214821166I had an aneurysm trying to decode this maltese text in terms of orthography, but i think i figured out a fair amount.Fascinating how similar to tunisian it is.I honestly salute the efforts of standardisation maltese has gone through, i can't fully sense it, but the text looks like it flows well and is eloquent enough.Honestly i am somewhat jealous.
>>214821329What's the problem with maltese?I always had the impression your population is self aware enough to take care of that aspect, obviously there will always be a discussion of indentity from individuals lacking in the historical and linguistic department, but maltese is fully yours, so i find it odd that it's not highly thought of, judging from the posts of course.
>>214821469Malta is small so they need a backup language. Historically before english this was italian and sicilian had a lot of influence on maltese. It wasnt a nationalist issue, just a practical one

>>214821372Was it you that I spoke about standardisation on /nafri/ some days ago? You should check out the alphabet suggested by Mikiel Anton Vassalli kek.>>214821469A mixture of things. Lack of knowledge on our identity and history, an "I don't care" attitude towards anything that doesn't generate money, a still-lingering colonial mentality, and so on. For me, Maltese is, and should always be, the top language of the archipelago, and if there is a language deserving of being considered as our secondary langauge, that's Italian. Now, I am not saying that trilingualism shouldn't be an option.
>>214821543You can easily have English or Italian serve that administrative task, while not neglecting Maltese.I know how humiliating it is, we use MSA (official) and French (not official) for that. A big portion of our population, maybe the majority, speak neither, or do very poorlyWhile Tamazight (official) is fully neglected, so is the Moroccan dialect which the majority speak, but it has no definined status.Language is very important for state building.
>>214821543And before Italian, we had Sicilian which was kind of a de facto official language. This is back in the Medieval times though so it has been a while now. Still, as you said, it has been instrumental in the formation of the Maltese vocabulary.

>>214821737Yes, that was me!Also, I have no issues regarding the current Maltese alphabet and orthography, if anything, it makes sense, and I sort of was able to figure it out.And trust me, we have similar issues to what you lined up, only beefed up a million times, to a point it's not even a point of contention anymore, most just don't care or label it secondary.Had Malta somehow not diverged quick enough culturally, mainly through religion, I am almost certain they would have forced Maltese to be a dialect of Arabic, then have you join the Arab League, kek.Actually, you ended up with an ideal scenario, you have a proper language of your own, fully institutionalized and protected, prevented from further interacting with "Arabic" speakers, so local synthetization of vocabulary and culture, and so on, is encouraged. Not sure if I made my point clearly, but that's what I think.

However, prior to Maltese's official recognition, there were several ideas by the British and their supporters on what to do with Maltese. Some suggested that they try and eliminate the Romance influence from it, others suggested that the Maltese should be taught how to write the Arabic alphabet and use it for Maltese instead of the Latin one. Some even suggested to dump Maltese and replace it with Arabic. Thankfully not of that happened, apart from some vocabulary meddling. As for the Arabic League, the Labour government in the 80's wanted us to join it.>Actually, you ended up with an ideal scenario, you have a proper language of your own, fully institutionalized and protectedAnd yet, we neglect it.
>>214822296That makes sense. I don't actually want to replace English, I just think it's funny how some people see English as native and home grown in the UK, but really it's just a mix of continental languages from immigrants (mainly from Anglo-Saxons and Normans of course)
>>214822520The English language, as a cultural asset, rightfully belongs to the English people, that's undeniable.External influences do not negate their claim to it.An objective perspective should be adopted when considering topics such as this one, a dogmatic approach rarely presents the full picture. And for me, all languages deserve to be preserved and protected.

So I guess you'd need academics who can study those forgotten languages and make records about how those languages work.
>>214822514>>214821820I spend a lot of time abroad and I used to make the mistake of trying to answer the question, "Who are the Maltese?" which is literally always the first question asked by every new person I encounter. I used to try to give them a short history lesson, but I don't anymore because it only leads to further misunderstanding. The thing is. We are very far, culturally, from both the North African countries to the south of us and also the Italians, or Greek, or Spaniards to the north. The Nafris, because of Islam and the geopolitical divide, pretty much everything is different. You cannot even go to lunch together without them commenting on your bacon sandwich. The Italian/Spaniard/Greeks are big complex cultures with their own national identities that we only have superficial understanding of, from the outside. And they have zero awareness of us. It's very hard to find common ground with any of those peoples. Unfortunately, Brits are the easiest to find common ground with. Which is unfortunate because of course we were never on equal ground with them.I do agree with you that most Maltese don't know their own history and the little history we are taught in school is full of lies. Like the whole La Vallette thing, the guy hated us. Or the French revolt, that was actually closer to a civil war than it is portrayed in the books.I think the problem is Malta was always home to a lot of different groups of people who didn't see themselves as Maltese. For example, I remember reading a lot of disgraced nobility from Europe would settle in Malta in self-exile. Then you have the Knights, the French and the British, all of whom lived on the island but kept a distinct existence. Not associating with the locals was always the thing the elite would do, so now the local elite are copying the same shit.
>>214823155We are on the strait of Gibraltar and are on the crossroads of 3 continents, what do you think we have it like?I'll say that much, kek.Jokes aside, i understand, it's not really anyone's individual duty to bring awareness to something too expansive for their power. At least in europe there's the possibility of grassroot movements, if one is concerned enough to voice their opinion for change, elsewhere not really.Tldr, sometimes the correct decision is to stop giving a fuck, and just enjoy your life for what it is, arriving at what you deem is objectively a nuanced understanding of who you are is good enough.

>>214834450Nice pic, Maltabro. You mind if I save it?>>214834998Good evening sir. Sorry to inform you but because of having fucked my lower back, I'm going to skip leg days, and with that squats tomorrow and the whole next week. However, I don't want to miss the gym. Were you in my place, would you do push-pull-rest-push-pull-rest for a week, or say fuck it and do push-pull-push-pull-push-pull?
>>214834932> it from your book of Maltese cryptids?Kek, no. However giants do feature in Maltese folklore.
>>214835098Kek, go ahead.
@CatniggaNgl I kinda was expecting for something to happen today in Bongistan. Seems like I was mistaken and t'was another 'ingburger

>>214835098I would do push-pull-rest-pull-push-rest.If you are injured or extremely fatigued to the point of skipping the gym I think there's no reason to add extra volume even if it's not the place you are fucked. If it were more long term I'd consider it, but not for a week.

The reason I asked what you would do in this case is that I have not yet had something like this happen to me, where I only skip one body part instead of skipping all gym sessions. Given how I will save 2 days to productivitymaxx by not going to the gym, I'll increase volume by a bit on push and pull sessions next week. Maybe +1 sets of 'ceps, rear delts, side delts, and the other 'ceps. I'll come up with something.>>214835632Nice.I had Tesco finest frozen 'za for dinner today. I know frozen 'za is grim, but I'd say the upmarket tesco ones absolutely mog most local pizzerias.Ngl I could go for a panna cotta rn.>>214835867>the day is almost over alreadyYou still have enough time to watch 1 (one) episode of STR.>>214835188Have you played Warframe as of late?

In fact, nobody in England seems to celebrate anything. >>214838601>Harvest festivals don't get celebrated here anymore, really. In fact, nobody in England seems to celebrate anything. Apart from Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, which does seem to get a few attendees in some places, nothing ever happens...I remember celebrating Harvest Festival when I was in primary school, but my sister and none of my nieces and nephews even knew what it was. My grand-niece will apparently be celebrating it this year (she lives in a small village in the countryside), so maybe Britain is slowly healing outside of the cities.I think if people didn't like setting off fireworks so much, Guy Fawkes Night would have gone the way of the Dodo by now as well.

I think that church's top cross would look great if someone installed lights in them like how we do here. Picrel is a random church i found on google maps with the lights on.
