Surrounding the urban belt and continuing down the shore are generally wealthy suburbs, some extremely so. If you go north it gets hilly, and you start to see more poor mountain towns mixed with summer homes. Go south west, you'll see farmland. South East is dominated by the pine barrens, a peculiar forest soaked in folklore stemming from its past as a lawless refuge of criminal elements in the colonial past. Nowadays it's mostly empty woods with some military bases. Orthodox jews are common in the northern parts of it.
