Is it even worth it to learn this shit anymore? My friend just got back from a 3 week trip to Japan and said he didn't have any trouble knowing literally zero Japanese. He told me virtually anyone under 40 in urban areas speaks good enough English to communicate perfectly fine, and his phone could translate any sign, label, or menu into legible English through the camera.

>>215150800Can anyone recommend or provide a list of things tourists should know to be as respectful as possible to locals in Japan? I understand some basics, but worried there are things I don't know, and friends will sometimes give me false information for humour. Things like taking shoes off indoors, remembering to bow, and places not to take food. Also, if I bring gift bags from my country to give to strangers are they likely to be receptive? Or would this be considered offensive?
