Ignoring the fact that everything within an 8 hour flight is part of American monoculture even a weekend getaway is like $500 minimum. Flights to South America are more expensive than Europe and don't even get me started on Asia. The crazy thing is hotels and domestic flights are so expensive it's about the same price for me and my partner to visit Jordan for two weeks as it is for us to go to Seattle for 5 days. Of course in that case I would rather go to Jordan but that would eat up almost all of my vacation days so I'm stuck going somewhere closer or having my vacation be 30-40% just flight time. Generally speaking I've found that things being more expensive here are massively offset by us making loads more money but travel is the one place that doesn't seem to be true.
