the south and southerners have a lot of character and i always idealized them but i think once youre inside the culture for a while it feels too narrowly-defined, almost gimmicky, and suffocating because of daily interactions which have an edge of conformity

this is largely the result of the civil war having eroded the southern haute-culture/bourgeoisie which had the effect of the "appalachification" of the south whereby southern identity became mostly about country music/bluegrass/moonshining/being a good ol boy

If you showed a Tidewootah accent to somebody today, they wouldn't even recognize it as Southern.
