How do you prevent getting discouraged when language learning? I have about 2 and half years learning Spanish and I do enjoy learning it. However, when I listen to music in spanish, I still can't understand most of what they are saying. But I can understand some of my friends when they speak slowly to me. I sometimes feel I am not where I am supposed to be level wise for a person who has been learning for 2+ years. I think I just need to be more patient because I am learning in a relatively unorthodox way. I don't do any grammar drills and almost all my learning is from general input and practicing with my friends. Which is why I think my conjugation skills are rough perhaps because I don't do drills.
>>
>>215309180
>2 and half years learning Spanish
How much it will be in hours?
>>
>>215309830
I have no idea. I do practice and engage with Spanish every day though. Passively and actively. 90+ percent of the music I listen to is in Spanish. I actively watch video content in Spanish and I actively try to read in Spanish too. My friends tell me I am doing good so I guess like with anything, it just takes time.
>>
>>215310169
What's the hardest content you can watch in Spanish? Can you understand TV shows without subtitles?
>>
>>215310209
The hardest content I watch in Spanish are random puerto rican podcasts. I find it hard and challenging to watch pod casts. I can understand whats happening in a lot of TV shows but I would say my understanding isn't 100 percent. I am definitely filling in blanks using the context of the situation presented in the show etc.

Very easy, easier than most content I listen to. She speaks fast, but that's no issue for me at all, because there's little casual speech or slang, and her articulation is very clear. Her thought also develops in a predictable manner.

I began studying English in that middle school, which is relatively late I guess. And despite being a good student I didn't engage with the language beyond classes and homework till late teens. But nowadays I often think in English, when I don't even have to e.g. in the shower. I won't be thinking in English in the kitchen, however, because I don't know the names of half of the ingredients.

>>215315606

B1 is not enough to read books comfortably, nor there's any point. The highest % of French literature is translated into English among all literatures. You can find letters, lesser writers, modern writers, academic books translated into English. French is also renders itself easily onto English or Spanish in your case. What remains in your motivation then? To read a somewhat more polished and poetic writing, which you won't be able to appreciate nuances of with your B1? Being able to read French poetry in your rusty French accent?
>>
>>215315686
It will be harder for some for sure. She also speaks the way I speak. Not talking about speed or articulation, although mine isn't bad either, but about the manner of constructing sentences, word choice. Pragmatics in other words.
>>
>>215315059
Not that hard. She speaks really really fast but her enunciation is also clear and precise and her thoughts follow predictable paths so you can kind of tell what she's going to say next and expect it rather than being blindsided by some random phrase or word. She actually talks a lot like ReligionForBreakfast if he was on crack. Even bizarre phrases like "a soft polytheistic understanding of paganism" are understandable because her pronunciation is so clear that it's kind of perfect.
>>
>>215315825
Of course you can read Portuguese, you speak Spanish, you know possible nuances of the words thanks to the shared lexicon. The language transfer from Spanish and English to French is more fuzzy. Maybe if you raise the bar and aim for B2/C1 you will also find more motivation?
>>
I've been learning Spanish for about 8 months now purely with inpoot. I haven't studied a single bit of grammar at all, just watching shows/movies/youtube vids. I'm essentially a B2 level and was able to spend a week in Mexico only speaking Spanish to everyone I met. Should I just keep doing what I'm doing or should I eventually start studying from textbooks? I can understand essentially 80-90% of what people say, and anything I don't understand is just gained from context at this point.

Based. Just learn to read it honestly. Its quite quick to get to a good level in French by ignoring outputting entirely. Not that you would ever want to interact with the French in the first place.

I'm not sure about only input method. I watch Dreaming Spanish and I know some of the things, I can guess the rest, but I can't remember the things I guess. For example, I watched a video with a genie and there was a word for "wish," but right after the video I couldn't recall the word in my mind. I think I'll start repeating after them, despite the method. Pronunciation doesn't seem that difficult.
>>215321608
how so?
>>
I've actually come around a bit to Duolingo and think it can be alright for getting acquainted with a language as a beginner. It provides a structure to follow which helps and it gives exposure to high frequency words and grammar. Doing the Vietnamese course currently. And then of course have to supplement with looking up grammar tips, watching videos for native pronunciation etc.
>>
>>215323289
>I'm not sure about only input method.
It works for a child. Not an adult. Something about adult brain is no good with passive learning. Of course there are exceptions. But I recommend traditional structured learning for adults, as in grind your pronunication, grammar, vocabulary, and so on.

Don't waste your time learning Arabic. In the time you'll spend to become fluent in this one hellishly difficult language (that's not even including all the different dialects because no one uses MSA in vernacular speech) you could learn 2-3 IE languages instead that would serve you better and actually improve your life and make you a more cultured and worldly person. With Arabic you'll have spent this colossal amount of time and effort to be able to better converse with sand monkeys and the worst kind of sand monkeys to boot because if they're not educated enough to be able to talk with you in English or French then their opinions probably aren't worth anything because our cultural output is purely the best ways to engage in durka durka-ism or preversions of 20th century political thought that aims to marry liberalism and islamism (it never works) like we're still in the 1800s and trying to figure out how laicite and religion fit. There is nothing of value to be found in Arabic that hasn't already been done in English and or French and is probably better in the latter two than what arap shitheads will make of it. I've personally never in my life woken up and thought "jee wizz thanks God for letting me know Arabic I don't know what i would've done without being able to perfectly understand sand monkeys". I doubt you will either.
Tldr: Don't do it. Waste your time on something more productive.

ابدأ بمشاهدة بعض قنوات اليوتيوب المتخصصة بالأطفال واللتي تتحدث بالعربية الفصحى*. تُكرَّر/تتكرر فيها الكلمات الأساسية كثيرا، وتصبح أيضا مستعدا للاستماع في نفس الوقت(؟)

Tried correcting your phrase. No idea what exactly you're trying to say in the last part, what is "متاعدًَا"?

*: This could be الذين يتحدثون بالعربية الفصحى instead of واللتي تتحدث if you mean the kids and not the channels, wasn't entirely sure which one you meant so went with the one that made a bit more sense, as no kids use Fusha to speak really. Also قنوات اليوتيوب المتخصصة بالأطفال والناطقة بالعربية الفصحى sounds better, but I tried to keep the wording of your message.

I've been thinking about switching. I've heard from some of the more intense language learners that they learn to speak faster this way since they have to actively remember it. I avoided it before because I didn't want to get into the habit of translating from my native language, but I tried it recently with sentences and it does seem to stick better and help force production skills to develop.

The language of nobles and highbrow literature for a few centuries with a very strong literary tradition and a massive backlog of every genre from history to art to poetry. Also a major language used by the UN alongside English. Infinitely more useful than Araplari in my opinion and far easier too.

It’s easier to watch a math lecture than to actually solve a math problem.

Part of the reason why “immersion” doesn’t work. At least the version lazy retards do. Like watching tv shows in the target language, or moving to the target country but only speaking few routine words daily, perhaps at the cashier.

What is a better combo of practice then? For me, I listen to music and read a lot but I also practice speaking frequently using apps. I wouldn't say I am particularly good at speaking but I can definitely make conversation. It just won't be fluent.
>>
I read a lot. Often, I come by English words I either haven't seen before or aren't particularly familiar with. So I started gathering these words into an Anki deck.
Right now it's over 1000 words. With something like 600k words in the language, no matter what your native tongue, there should be something here you haven't seen before, and plenty more to add.
Nothing beats a good, broad lexicon.

Before unicode was widely adopted you could basically only use Latin script and Japanese on the internet
Lots of languages developed "chat alphabets" to write their native script (usually Cyrillic or Arabic) into Latin because of this, some of which are still in use today

Also Cyrillic is often disabled because of the risk of link spoofing by using a Cyrillic a or o in place of a Latin a or o etc, so the link looks completely the same but it takes you to a completely different website that then phishes you

I would only think that's weird if the game has localization for that language but doesn't support it in chat

Yeah, I've always found it off-putting that other people (Spaniards, Italians, and the French) kiss each other on the cheek. I don't even want to shake hands with someone who uses his to jack off. The Japanese have the best greeting: just bowing to each other, without physical contact.

I started day 1 with Lute, knowing basically zero words.

It's just basketball Americans that love shortening words for some reason. Most of the time it's obvious based on context, other times you need to consult urban dictionary to figure out what it means.
