Our architecture is just really shit, I don’t even think it’s a post-war thing, look at houses, buildings and cathedrals that managed to survive are still less intricate or beautifully designed as those in countries like France, Germany and Italy. Everything is so plain, buildings designed to serve a function which they do but lacking in any sense of aesthetics or elegance. No little flairs or intricacy that would elevate things that much more, even tiny things like patterned gates or window shutters, and the prevalence of brick everywhere (especially red brick) is really quite ugly. Don’t get me started on the profound ugliness of our cities and new builds. Here is an image I made contrasting a poor neighbourhood in England vs France, there is a world of difference. Even in villages and towns that are still quite nice, they are quaint and kitschy, ‘pretty’ compared to various towns in countries like Italy that are ‘beautiful’.Nature is still quite nice but it’s no more special compared to the rest of Europe, plus we are one of the most nature deprived countries on the continent. You can’t just disappear into a forest here.I think our lack of aesthetic sense and appreciation for beauty is what makes me most ashamed to be English.
