When did the over policing and the making of rules for everything begin in the UK? They used to be known for their liberties and freedom.
>>215349182Victorian era.
>>215349182>They used to be known for their liberties and freedom.huh
>>215349196>Magna Carta in 1215 (as if I could forget)>English revolution predating French revolution by more than a century>strong parliamentarianism compared to continental Europe (other than the PLC) all the way until the 19th century
>>215349182pov you stole a leprechaun's gold pot?
>>215349182Overpolicing and strict discipline can go hand in hand with political liberties. England was both a country of strong political liberties compared to continental Europe, but also the spawning point of Disciplinary society.Abstract political freedoms and real day to day freedom of person are two different things. English however does not have two separate words for these categories.
>>215349182> They used to be known for their liberties and freedom. What?
>>215349182Decline probably began in mid 19th century, but it was really noticeable in 20th Century, especially after WW2. >>215349196Britain was incredibly politically free compared to Europe for a very long time. Brits didn’t have a police force until 1830s, as this was seen as a sign of continental despotism. They had one of the first democracies in Europe, and were very big into individual rights. This is the spirit that led to America being so focused on freedom, and why it was so eager to fight for independence.Kind of hard to believe now, though, with Britain as the most authoritarian country in Western Europe.
>>215349483Yes, they had individual rights and a level of democracy while most of Europe were serfs being ruthlessly whipped by despots
>>215349700That’s a big overgeneralization. Peasants were their own estate in Scandi. Most of the HRE abolished serfdom early.
