Most of this (what an element is, this particular subtance is an "element") was figured out from the late 18th until the early-mid 20th centuries. The Curies had a lot to do with the French credits, I'm sure, and the American Actinides are all around nuclear research, European intellegensia who came here and helped with lab work etc. Lots of Sweden on the map. Basically Europeans did all the heavy lifting on figuring out the periodic table (and some migrated to America) many years ago before any Asians could really get involved.
