>American cities literally used to be built for PCC
>>215721894Yes these are called 'streetcar suburbs'. Today they're generally the most expensive neighborhoods in every city, I grew up in one.
>>215722010it must suck living in these houses, street cars like these generate a lot of noise and vibrations
>>2157220511. Most of them don't actually have streetcars anymore, they were replaced by busses by the mid-20th century. Some conspiracy theorists will claim that it was some grand auto/oil conspiracy, but in reality it was just expensive to replace the tracks and busses had a lot of advantages over streetcars (they can avoid objects, let people off on the side of the road rather than the middle). 2. I do live directly next to a light rail today, light rails are not noisy at all. I much prefer having a light rail go by my apartment than be next to a busy road.
>>215722143trains moving on a dedicated rail tracks are a lot less noisy than street cars moving on rails that are integrated into the road like on OP's pic
>>215721894They shut down the last tramline in Calcutta last year I think, it's over
>>215721894PCC is the largest and most powerful cartel in brazil with deep roots in all layers of government and market/commerce
I just searched for a random photo of a PCC car to make this thread, but just found out that line is actually still an active part of Pittsburghs light rail.Kinda cool.
>>215722647Pittsburgh's light rail has horrible ridership however. Among worst per mile in USA. I think their bus system is okay though.
>>215721894I liked getting on one as a kid, my city discontinued trams in 2011.
>>215721894American towns and suburbs would be kino if they got rid of all those ugly wide roads (stroads they're called I believe), implemented some public transport and proper sideways.
>>215722991Problem with a lot of the newer suburbs is street connectivity. Older suburbs built with grid, a lot of new ones just build a single street with a dead end that leads to an artery road and put houses along it. That's why I wish there were more big developers to build master planned communities and less smaller developers popping up 10 houses in whatever suburban lot they managed to secure.
>>215721894PCC is a myth
>>215722991We'd probably be less fat too. Oh well.

>>215722991>everything would be perfect if it was all exactly like it is in germanywell I'm glad you figured out the final solution to city planning, hans
>>215722991Not an option with how spread out everything is now. We designed a society around avoiding black people and now it would be extremely expensive to fix it.
