>>215886170The only actual way to acquire a language is by getting as much comprehensive input as possible. As a complete beginner, you want easy reading/listening material, and preferably one that you actually enjoy. Read a lot, listen a lot, try to make the effort to understand what's in front of you, do not shy away from moving on if it's too hard for you, and the most important of it all, be disciplined, do it every single day, keep it going even if you get frustrated in your first days. Slowly, but surely, that's how you learn a language. Treat grammar and anki as stepping stones, catalysts to help you on the journey, but always remember that they are not the goal in itself. The goal is for you to be able to enjoy japanese content in its original form. Now go forth, canadian anon, and prove others that you CAN learn a second (third?) language!

After reaching the 2.5k~ mark in the old Anki6k premade deck that was the standard for beginners years ago, and after reading the entirety of Tae Kim (that was a mistake btw), I went on to read https://vndb.org/v15870 . I still have my txt files from my first few days, where I was copying and pasting every single line I was trying to read. Here are the lines from my literal first day, which took me HOURS to read, going back and forth in Tae Kim trying understand what the fuck any of them meant:>「メグねぇ、お兄ちゃんには期待してるんだよ?」>「メグのお兄ちゃんなんだから、モテないわけない。がんばらんといかんよー?」>大きな胸が、腰から背中へ滑りながら潰れていく>どさくさにまぎれて、爪の先で乳首をコリコリしてくる。>「メグがお兄ちゃんの立場だったら触られるだけなんて無理。妹のを触り返しちゃう」>こういう時でも、しっかり兄の乳首を摘んでくる子だった。>風呂から出たら、話を聞きにいってみるか。I'm not exaggerating, it took me around 2 hours to read and understand 7 lines, even after all that Anki and Tae Kim reading, and these are all very simple phrases.Point is, your first reading experience will be painful, frustrating, and you will get the urge to give up, as it will feel like japanese is an overwhelming wall impossible to overcome. And the truth is, it is actually quite fucking hard, but not impossible. You WILL learn japanese, believe in yourself. Or, at least, believe in me, who believes in you.

Tae Kim explain grammar concepts in an "easy to digest" way, not truly going in-depth and exploring edge cases and exceptions, he generally goes "here's how you should understand it" and that's it, without properly explaining the underlying interactions. That just doesn't work for me, maybe because I am a programmer idk but I prefer to have a clear model on how the entities interact with each other than try to learn concepts based on unclear "definitions". And it was a mistake because unfortunately for me, at the time there were not that many resources widely known and I was too stubborn on the idea that "if everyone is learning from this, then I should be able to get it too!".What I suggest for you is: read the first lessons in Tae Kim anyway, and see if the way he explains stuff works for you. Our brains all work in different ways, so don't take my experience as ground truth. Just be aware that there are other resources out there that might be a better fit than Tae Kim's. In my case, what worked was Cure Dolly lessons for foundational knowledge, and plus a combination of Imabi as reference for in-depth explanations, and the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar (a.k.a DoJG) for quick references.
